Nickelodeon Animation Studios has agreed to voluntarily recognize 177 production workers as members of the Animation Guild, avoiding the need for an Nlrb election.
The Animation Guild — also known as IATSE Local 839 — already represents about 400 artistic workers at Nickelodeon, including storyboard artists, character designers and writers.
The new members include production managers, production coordinators and post-production assistants. Those jobs include many entry-level employees, and they tend to make less than the other guild members.
The guild announced in December that the workers had signed cards seeking to unionize, as they sought to address high healthcare costs and low pay.
Ryan Brodsky, a production coordinator, said in a union press release in December many workers could not afford to live in Los Angeles, and had “taken the shame of asking our parents for money so we can pay rent and eat.”

The Animation Guild announced on Tuesday that Nickelodeon Animation has agreed to voluntarily recognize it as the bargaining representative for the studio’s production workers after the overwhelming majority signed unionization cards last month, bypassing the need for a unionization vote with the National Labor Relations Board.
The proposed bargaining unit would cover 177 production workers, making it the largest unit among such workers to affiliate with the Animation Guild, a.k.a. IATSE Local 839. Among the positions covered by the bargaining unit are Production Managers, Production Coordinators, Post-Production Assistants, and Asset Production Coordinators among others.

Let's face it: it can be tough to be the kind of gay guy who is attracted more to meatier, hairier men in a world where lean, rippled abs and waxed backs and chests are seen as the physical ideal.
In response, a whole community has built up around these men and those who share their interest: the bear community. And it sometimes must feel like they're living in a completely different place than the rest of the Glbt community — like they're living on a different planet, or at least, well, in a different city.
A new movie, Bear City (out on DVD next month), takes bears and non-bears alike into that city.
And like The Boys in the Band (one of the first movies about openly gay men) and the 1978 French-Italian film La Cage Aux Folles (one of the first popular movies about drag queens), the hopes and dreams of many,...

Good things come to those who wait and for those who feel as though they've suffered through a year of largely uninspired films up to now will likely breathe a sigh of relief at the sound of names like Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola and Peter Weir. 'Tis the season for Jim Carrey to take a pay cut to star in a gay romance like "I Love You Phillip Morris" or Javier Bardem is whispering sweet nothings to spirits in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu's "Biutiful" rather than Julia Roberts.
There is the naughty -- Kristen Stewart stripping in "Welcome to the Rileys," the would-be terrorists of the Brit comedy "Four Lions," or the evil Santa in "Rare Exports" -- and the nice -- the tap-dancing lovers in "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench," the glory of James Franco's daredevil surviving "127 Hours" and Colin Firth's verbally-challenged royal conquering his stutter in "The King's Speech.
