Amandla Stenberg has landed the lead role in Darkest Mind, a big-screen adaptation of the young adult trilogy by Alexandra Bracken.
Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, the woman behind the Kung Fu Panda movies, will be making her live-action feature debut with Darkest Minds, which is set in a post-pandemic world in which most of America's children and teens have died. Some of the remaining young people begin to develop superpowers, which causes society to place them in internment camps.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stenberg will play protagonist Ruby Daly, a 16-year-old with telekenetic powers who escapes from her camp and joins a rebel group on the run from the government. Wayward Pines' Chad Hodge wrote the script for the film adaptation.

Seven months after exiting Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, the Artist Formerly Known as Capt. Irving is having his say.
“Chances are, I won’t be back, because they kinda asked me to leave,” Orlando Jones tells fans in a video released Saturday.
Jones hasn’t spoken publicly about his departure since it was announced in May, ahead of a retooled Season 3. At the beginning of the season, showrunner Clifford Campbell told TVLine that “for a handful of reasons, it became difficult to schedule and make work out” Jones’ appearance to wrap Frank’s storyline.

Watch out, heads might roll over this news. When it returns for its third season, Sleepy Hollow will be down an integral member of its apocalypse-fighting team: Frank Irving. Orlando Jones, who has been with the drama since it premiered in 2013 on Fox, will not be returning for season three, Variety reports. A fan-favorite on-and-off-screen, Jones was known for hilariously live-tweeting episodes of the show (as well as other shows, like Supernatural), but has yet to address his departure on social media. Fox had no comment on Jones' reported exit. However, Jones isn't the only one leaving Sleepy Hollow as showrunner Mark Goffman will not be returning for season three; set to...

Sleepy Hollow will be without one of its core cast members when the series returns for its upcoming third season. As first reported by Variety, Orlando Jones is leaving the Fox supernatural drama ahead of Season 3. Jones played Captain Frank Irving on Sleepy Hollow. Although Frank initially didn’t believe Ichabod (Tom Mison) and Abbie (Nicole Beharie) about the supernatural events happening in town during the show’s first season, he quickly became their ally and continued to be one throughout Season 2. Sleepy Hollow was a major critical and commercial success for Fox during its first season, but the show saw a major decline in both its ratings and in critics’ praise during its uneven second season. Although a third season of Sleepy Hollow was by no means a guarantee, the show was picked up for Season 3 back in March, but a new showrunner, Clifton Campbell (The Glades), was…

After the unmitigated disaster that was last week’s plot, I was ready to write the last two episodes of “Sleepy Hollow” off as a loss. Then the last 5 minutes of “Awakening” happened. Now I’m not sure. But let’s start at the beginning. Too much was happening too fast this week. If the “Sleepy Hollow” writers wanted to explore the mother/son dynamic between Katrina and Henry, both “Kali Yuga” and “What Lies Beneath” could’ve been scrapped or rearranged. Introducing Solomon Kent earlier in the season would’ve given the show an over-arcing theme that is sadly missing. The slow build of Katrina turning to blood magic, keeping her newfound relationship with Henry a secret, pushing Ichabod away could’ve all been compelling drama…and given audiences a Good reason to hate Katrina. Instead, we get Mrs. Crane’s abrupt heel-turn shoved into a single episode where...

Well, it couldn’t last forever. After two episodes that were entertaining — if not exactly the definition of “strong” — “Sleepy Hollow” relapsed into a aimless mess with “What Lies Beneath.” From a needlessly complicated sub-plot that introduced a retroactive schizophrenic Frank Irving to the pointless destruction of an upgraded Library of Exposition, the most logical thing in this episode was the magical hologram of a dead President. Let’s dive in, shall we? Despite wandering the halls of the Sleepy Hollow Underground for months, it’s neither Ichabod nor Abbie who stumble on the secret cache of knowledge about the End Times™. That honor is instead bestowed upon construction workers mapping the tunnels for excavation, because we’re expected to believe a colonial New England town would destroy history to build a parking lot rather than allocating funds for restoration and tours. The unlucky trio find a mysterious hatch, which...

In offline conversations I’ve had about Sleepy Hollow, there's been a general consensus: When the show rolls out a subpar episode, what you usually get is 35 or so minutes of monster-thwarting/world-saving busy work, and about six minutes of narrative through-line. Oftentimes, these episodes are front-loaded with the busy-work stuff (by which I mean, the hocus-pocus particulars that won’t ever matter in subsequent installments) with the through-line stuff appearing in a twist ending, like a few weeks ago, when a seemingly undead Captain Frank Irving turned up at a Sleepy Hollow convenience mart. Last night’s Sleepy Hollow stretched that framework to its extremes: The busy work was suuuper boring, but the episode’s twist endings — there were so many of them, right?? — delivered more juicy story than we’ve had for weeks. As Ichabod would say: Huzzah! Let's discuss foe-of-the-week Solomon Kent and then we’ll get to the good stuff.

After a week of Mills’ sister shenanigans, backstory on Hawley, and non-Christian mythology in Kali Yuga, “Sleepy Hollow” pivots back to Ichabod and Katrina’s world. More specifically, Katrina’s family history. But even with Mrs. Crane finally getting a chance to shine in “Spellcaster,” is it enough to save her in the eyes of the fans? Ehhh…maybe. The theme that “Sleepy Hollow” seems to be running with this week is “Potential for Evil.” Whether it’s Ichabod staring into the abyss of “What If?” that is his evil twin, Katrina admitting to herself that she’d be 1000% more interesting as a character if she gave in to the dark side, Henry using petty thugs to remind himself that he is a boot amongst ants, or Irving winning the award for “Most Convincing Performance By A Soulless Monster,” just about everyone got take a turn on the existential crisis...

I’m talking about Sleepy Hollow‘s Frank Irving, of course, who this week reveals himself to be every bit as much in Henry’s pocket as the contract he unwittingly signed in blood would have you believe.
Makes sense: When have you ever gotten out of paying a lawyer something he or she is owed?
In related news: Katrina, get yourself together! Just because you dress like Bad Willow doesn’t mean you have to act like her!
Let’s review what happens in “Spellcaster.”

Story by Heather V. Regnier
Teleplay by Sam Chalsen & Nelson Greaves
Directed by Doug Aaronowski
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
It’s interesting that “Kali Yuga” is an episode that centers so heavily on Nick Hawley and Frank Irving, because those two characters are indicative of the attention deficit disorder Sleepy Hollow has with its supporting cast. Hawley, brought in to add roguish flair and romantic interest to the show, has since drifted to the point that even the showrunner admitted they threw out their original conception of the character. And Irving, after going from an implied villain in the pilot, has been shuffled from ally to asylum to afterlife so much that it’s become wearing when the show has to give him screen time. “Kali Yuga” tries hard to give both of these characters a bit of shading, but unfortunately...

The back half of “Sleepy Hollow” Season 2 got off to a shaky start last week, as Katrina’s terrible life choices continued to hamstring the group. But as much as we want to lay the blame at the feet of Ichabod’s wife, it’s hard truth time: the show’s been wobbly for all of the sophomore season. The show has simply gotten bogged down by its own weight. Too many plots, too many characters, not enough truly bonkers one-off villains and too little of the dynamic of Ichabod and Abbie that made the first season so much fun. You know it, I know it. Apparently even the writers know it, because “Pittura Infamante” cut away the festering romantic quadrangles and hand-wringing angst about Henry's soul in a (successful) attempt to right the ship. ******** For the first time in forever, **strains of “Frozen” soundtrack play in the distance**, the...

Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 13, “Pittura Infamante”
Written by Melissa Blake
Directed by John Leonetti
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Last weekend during the Fox executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour, Fox chairman and CEO Dana Waldron talked at length about their plans for the spring, which included thoughts on the direction of Sleepy Hollow. Waldron held off on announcing a season three renewal (even after handing them out to Empire, Gotham, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine), but said they were “hopeful” and there were ongoing conversations with the creative team. Citing a “high level of difficulty” in balancing the show’s characterization and mythology, she said that the show was “a little overly serialized” and promised that there would be a shift to “something that feels a bit more episodic in nature… it’s all about calibrating the show, not making dramatic changes.”

What Sleepy Hollow needs this week is a kickass, Abbie-and-Ichabod-against-impending-evil power hour.
What it gets is the Cranes’ date night from hell, with splashes of the Mills sisters being fantastic and Irving being inexplicably alive.
The latter — plus Ichabod, of course — would’ve been plenty for those of us who don’t hate Katrina, but also don’t need her harshing the Witnesses’ vibe solving crimes. I don’t begrudge Red the chance to do some fun stuff, but let’s leave the heavy lifting to the God-chosen frontline of the anti-apocalypse army, shall we?
Instead, Katrina and Ichabod go...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including The Good Wife, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Person of Interest and Chicago Fire!
1 | Did this week’s Good Wife telegraph Archie Panjabi’s imminent exit? Who do you think asked Peter to stall Judge Cuesta? (And could Peter’s aide have been more of a dunce for leaving his cell on the table in plain sight?) As for Diane grabbing the altered meta-data off Kalinda’s computer: Wouldn’t the super-sleuth travel with...

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a good Winter Holiday Of Their Choosing™ because it’s back to the grind. Especially for soldiers in the war against determined but inept evil. Last time we saw the gang, Team Henry had pulled off a Hail Mary save, with the Horseman of War turning on his master and killing Moloch. But with cryptic phrases like “There were Horsemen before you, there will be Horsemen after you,” the words of Beyonce ring true: Don't you ever for a second get to thinking you're irreplaceable. Meanwhile, Captain Irving is dead and the Horseman of Death is still in chains beneath Sleepy Hollow. How will Henry’s change of heart affect the Crane family dynamic? Let’s find out! ******* We open seconds after we last left off. Ichabod is seeing flashes of lights because demons die like a flash bang. Basic demon biology here, guys.

Sleepy Hollow must’ve read a few too many women’s magazines as of late, because this week’s episode really takes the New Year: New You! theme to heart.
Repeatedly, resoundingly, unrelentingly to heart. And while we can probably go a while without hearing Abbie draw parallels between trendy fruit and her journey as a Witness, the hour’s last few moments — where Irving resurfaces as one of the living! (or, at least, not one of the dead) — made up for some of the episode’s flaws.
Let’s review what happens in “Paradise Lost.”

This is it, y’all. We made it to the mid-season finale! After tonight it will be farewell until after the first of the year. So let’s squeeze ever last insane drop out of “The Akeda,” like a giant shake’n’bake of mythology and history. Abbie and Ichabod have the sword of Methuselah, and the Horsemen of the Apocalypse have Moloch. Who will triumph? ************ Thunder and lightning greet the audience to let us know things are about to Get Real™. Ichabod and Abbie are headed straight to Fredrick’s Manor with the sword, because time is of the essence. Henry has blown the horn to signal the rise of Moloch. I kind of wonder what the range on that thing is? All across the tri-state area, the top news story tonight is about the strange trumpeting sound being reported by hundreds of people. More at 11. Ichabod is giving directions the old-fashioned way,...

Warning: The following Q&A contains major spoilers for Monday’s Sleepy Hollow midseason finale. Proceed with caution.
Stick a sword in Moloch, because he’s done.
Sleepy Hollow‘s midseason finale ended with a game-changing cliffhanger: Though Henry (Aka the Horseman of War) looked like he was going to skewer Ichabod with the Sword of Methuselah, he instead plunged it into Moloch’s chest, destroying the demon and effectively ending his fledgling reign on Earth.
The big twist came at the end of a packed episode that also saw Frank Irving agree to wield the sword — his signed-away soul...

Last week was an Abbie-centric episode where we finally got to see her and Jenny interact with their mom. Of course, Mrs. Mills was embodying the “cryptic messenger” trope, so the family reunion was laced with unnecessary terror and miscommunication. So, a pretty standard family gathering. This week, the gang returns to the task at hand. Moloch — and certain doom — are barreling down on the world. They’ve got to gear up for the “Magnum Opus.” ************* No nightmare cold open this week. Instead we get the other, far more delightful opening where Ichabod and Abbie do something with modern technology, causing the curmundgeon in Crane to come out. This time? A friendly game of Head’s Up charades using their phones. Abbie’s clue is Crane “Cannot tell a lie,” which leads to outrage by Ichabod because his Bff George Washington lied All The Time. “Whatever, Colonial Mythbuster,” chides Abbie,...

Abbie wears a hat throughout this week’s Sleepy Hollow, and I have a theory as to why.
I like to think that Lt. Mills woke up with flat hair, realized that her day would likely include activities like running for her life from a snake-headed monster and emotionally propping up her freaked-out fellow Witness, thought, “Screw it,” and crammed the cap on her head.
Because who cares about a cute ‘do when an world-ending demon is locked, loaded and ready to bring about the end of days?
Elsewhere, Irving makes a run for it and Katrina… well, Katrina looks...

Only when you’ve come from playing House of Cards‘ Chief of Staff Linda Vasquez does portraying a hard-nosed, small-town sheriff seem like a light-hearted vacation.
“House of Cards has its own intrigue and has just as much darkness” as her current gig, playing Sleepy Hollow‘s Sheriff Leena Reyes. “But maybe not that much explanation of why people are dark.”
The Fox drama, she continues, bases its monsters “in a psychological reality, which is a representation of what the characters are going through.” (For example, the succubus plaguing town in Monday’s episode draws attention to the conflicting desires in various characters’ hearts.

This week, we’re very late with DEADtime. Sorry about that – the month of October is really busy and it’s hard enough to keep up with all of the other stuff going on! Since last night’s episode of Sleepy Hollow was sorta-kinda musically themed, let’s riff on that. Structurally speaking, the average Sleepy Hollow episode this season has felt all chorus, no verses. It’s the same old refrain: Open with light humor between Leftenant Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane; something weird happens in Sleepy Hollow; Crane finds artifact from scene of weirdness; historical flashback as he explains artifact’s significance and realizes who monster of the week is; chase monster of the week; kill monster of the week; here’s a scene about how Captain Frank Irving is still screwed. Play us out, staring-into-space Henry Parrish!Having said that, of course, the catch is that a Sleepy Hollow chorus, even when played over and over again at pretty much the same tempo every week, is still super catchy. Like Crane Tokyo-drifting all over a parking lot in Abbie’s SUV...
