Nick Cave has teamed up with the Miraculous Love Kids of Afghanistan — a musical group of girl refugees — for their new single “Breathless/Beautiful.” Listen to it below.
Based on “Wife With Eyes Closed,” a poem Cave wrote about his wife Susie for Issue #60 of his The Red Hand Files, “Breathless/Beautiful” is a resonant number heightened by the children’s saccharine harmonies. Group founder Lanny Cordola intros the track with gravelly vocals backed by slow acoustic guitar before Cave’s gruffness enters the picture.
“The words resonated deeply in my soul and it struck me how even in loss, grief, and the harsh agonies of the world, we can create a sacred chamber in the heart to keep our loved ones,” Cordola said in a press release. It was his idea to expand on the poem, having first read it just two days after losing his brother. “Then the...

Production has begun on SpeakEasy Films’ Radio Caroline documentary about the 1960s rebel broadcaster that set up offshore in defiance of the UK government’s radio monopoly.
Joe Mundo, Jamie Talbot and Mike Witherill are producing the film and Witherill is financing through his Mjw Pictures.
The production will use feature previously unseen images from the time and rare concert performances from rock icons and is set to open in 2014 to coincide with Radio Caroline’s 50th birthday. Hans Fjellestad directs.
”Radio Caroline is about the dramatic changing of an era and the music that powered it,” said Fjellestad. “This is exactly the kind of story I love to dig into and put up on the screen.”
“This film is very much about the music, but it’s also filled with fascinating and eccentric characters. These guys launched some of the most iconic bands in the world during a very repressive time,” added Mundo.

For most, the phrase “Sunset Strip” conjures up images of neon lights, sun-kissed exposed skin and long, druggy, rock-and-roll fueled nights. This is the conceit promised by the new documentary of the same name by Hans Fjellestad, and it (mostly) delivers, offering up a definitive history of the famed street, that is hindered only by a confusion of purpose and a loose structure.
"Sunset Strip” opens with a recitation of a poem by iconic Strip tattoo artist Mark Mahoney. In his cigarettes and whisky whisper, he paints a seedy, beautiful, Bukowski-esque picture that is our first introduction to the fable of the Sunset Strip that is about to be told. Fjellestad eschews the traditional talking heads interview format by arranging conversations of a sort, combining characters like Mickey Rourke and Mahoney to chat about their memories, while sitting inside one of the famous locations the film sets out to historicize.

After playing a slightly mopey and definitely odd vampire in Twilight and its upcoming sequel, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Jackson Rathbone is set to stay on the dark side for his next film, landing the lead role in Lords of Chaos. In it, he'll play a Norweigan death metal star convicted of brutally stabbing a rival musician.Yes, they put the "death" in "death metal" up in Norway, since this is based on the real-life story of Varg Vikernes, aka The Count, of one-man-band Burzum. He was imprisoned for 16 years between 1993 and this year, following a series of church arsons and the stabbing to death of rival Øystein Aarseth, aka Euronymous of the band Mayhem. Vikernes also dabbled in far-Right politics, the Heathen Front and was found with a cache of explosives when he was arrested for Aarseth's murder. The film is based on the book Lords of Chaos...

The goon show meets the evil doctor genre in Sixth Avenue Pictures' imaginatively dotty send-up of this particular blend of gothic horror. Cheeky and witty, this low-budget comedy won a Silver Cindy at this year's Seattle International Film Festival. Although its oddball humor and bargain-basement aura may preclude it from major distribution, "Dr. Benderfax" seems ideally suited to the Troma wing -- it has that kind of nutball intelligence.
Plotwise, "Benderfax" is straight out of the Von Stroheim school of ghoulish drama: A young physician, Andrew (Steve Gouveia), seeks employment at an obscure research institute headed by a megalomaniac doctor, namely Dr. Benderfax (Nigel Hazeldine). However, Benderfax has not prospered out of witlessness and, based on Andrew Good's grades and his ability to draw anatomically correct dogs, he hires him on the spot. But, as all you German expressionists know, things are not exactly what they seem at the institute -- especially down in "that room."
You don't have to have your head wired to electrodes to know what will likely happen next: Andrew discovers the not-so-good doctor is doing experiments on live people. In short, it's one of those one-life vs. science types of philosophical constructs. What is most fun about Benderfax, however, is the film's satiric slant on the genre.
Narratively, writer-director-cinematographer-driver-cook and chief effects washer Tom Hosler has welded together a Monty Python-ish take on horror movies. It's both daffy and droll.
The actors give a boost throughout, especially Hazeldine as the amoral Benderfax, whose slithery James Mason-ish enunciation is constantly amusing. As the innocent young doctor, Gouveia brings the proper well-scrubbed manner to his role, and Caroline Hazeldine is entertaining as a libidinous Nurse Wratchett-type.
Despite its low-budget blood type, "Dr. Benderfax" is technically well put together, including some impressive computer graphics and animation not usually associated with such an opus.
