Four simultaneous protests occurred in New York City on Friday, the first day of the SAG-AFTRA strike, with Writers Guild, IATSE, local Democratic Socialists of America members and more from other unions joining in on the picket lines and similar protests occurring in Los Angeles.
Amid beating, hot sun and spurts of rain, picketers rallied in front of the Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery Offices near Union Square, Amazon and HBO in Hudson Yards, Paramount in Times Square and NBCUniversal at 30 Rock.
Among the hundreds that walked the New York picket lines Friday were Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, Survival of the Thickest’s Peppermint and Sagan Chen, Numb3rs’ David Krumholtz, Grounded for Life’s Kevin Corrigan, Severance stars Zach Cherry and Jen Tullock, as well as Runaway’s actors Ariela Barer and Clarissa Thibeaux.

Making lists is not my favorite occupation. They inevitably inspire only reader complaints. Not once have I ever heard from a reader that my list was just fine, and they liked it. Yet an annual Best Ten list is apparently a statutory obligation for movie critics.
My best guess is that between six and ten of these movies won't be familiar. Those are the most useful titles for you, instead of an ordering of movies you already know all about.
One recent year I committed the outrage of listing 20 movies in alphabetical order. What an uproar! Here are my top 20 films, in order of approximate preference.
1. "A Separation"
This Iranian film won't open in Chicago until Jan. 27. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin and was just named the year's best foreign film by the New York Film Critics Circle. It is specifically Iranian, but I believe the more specific...

The notion of pedophilia on film is a tricky subject. Just how far do you go in representing something that 99.9% of the world’s population deems utterly reprehensible? David Schwimmer – in his second feature after the much more light hearted Run, Fatboy, Run – tackles this challenge with gumption in his psychological sexual thriller Trust. Whether you’re a fan of Schwimmer or not, he has a certain directorial flair and he handles his subject with tact. Released today on Blu-ray and DVD, our review follows.
Fourteen-year-old Annie (Liana Liberato) is like any other teenager: she wants to grow up too quickly and spends her days trying to impress the popular girls at her school. At home, she spends her time chatting in online chatrooms. When she starts talking to a guy who claims to be another high school student, they become fast friends and Annie begins to consider Charlie (Chris Henry Coffey) her first boyfriend.

Madeleine Zabel is the story of an infamous, Lindsay Lohan-type young celebrity named Maddy Z, and a stressed out reporter named Elliot Snow (Chris Henry Coffey) attempting to capture her in a controversial light. Both characters are far from happy. As we can imagine, Maddy Z (Jenna D’Angelo) is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, juggling too many “projects” from her modeling and music to fashion. Elliot is worn out but determined, potentially risking his own relationship during this brief 10-minute phone interview with Maddy Z.
Written, directed, produced and edited by Chris Shimojima, Dp and editor of the acclaimed web-series Downsized, Madeleine Zabel tears away the makeup laden exterior of a fictional pop star and exposes the fragile, broken humanity that lies beneath. Jenna D’Angelo portrays the questionably talented, yet equally popular and criticized Maddy Z with a convincing range of emotions. She hides her true feelings until the end,...

Though he has to some extent established himself as perfectly capable of directing with his work on Friends and Simon Pegg rom-com Run Fatboy Run, a hard-hitting and serious drama about rape is perhaps not the first thing you might expect from goofy Ross Gellar himself, David Schwimmer. Before even a frame of film rolled, I had to tip my hat to the man for taking such a bold decision. It is pleasing then, that the film is of such high quality.
Trust introduces us to an all-too happy family. Middle child Annie (Liberato) is constantly glued to her laptop or her smartphone, chatting online. Her attention is mostly devoted to a friendly boy who claims to be twenty. Annie becomes concerned, but not scared off when Charlie (Coffey...

For a goodly while, it does feel, depressingly, as if Trust is going to morph into one of those luridly melodramatic made-for-Lifetime flicks gone theatrical feature thanks to the presence of a stellar cast. That director David Schwimmer (Run, Fat Boy, Run) appears to be wasting the intensity of both Clive Owen (The Boys Are Back) and Catherine Keener (Cyrus) is then both a relief -- this is not going to be Oh Dear God, No, Not My Daughter, No! -- and a pity: why cast these two marvelous and powerfully engaging actors if they’re not going to bring the drama? It’s all very low key as Owen and Keener stand aside as the parents of 14-year-old Annie (the excellent Liana Liberato) while she is seduced into terrible situation by an Internet stalker (Chris Henry Coffey, appropriately deeply creepy) who pretends to be something he isn’t. In the Season 2 opener of Downsized, Hank (Gerard Urciuoli) tries to shake Beth (Daryn Strauss) out of her depression, while Connor (Chris Henry Coffey) is caught between the sheets with his estranged wife (Michele Mavissakalian.)
Downsized is a made-for-the-web ensemble dramedy about the extremes people go to when faced with an economic crash. The critically acclaimed series, told in "the mosaic style of Magnolia with the dark humor of Nurse Jackie," follows the lives of several New Yorkers as they try to balance work, love and their checkbooks post-economic crisis.

David Schwimmer has had a pretty spotty record as a director -- he's mostly crapped out TV movies or a few episodes of the terrible American version of "Little Britain" and his only feature film was the remarkably forgettable Run, Fatboy, Run. He finally sought out material that was much closer to his heart, and the result is Trust, the crushing tale of a freshman girl who gets stalked and sexually violated by an online predator. It plays out like a painstakingly well-crafted Lifetime movie or an afterschool special, but that's more to the layout of the plot rather than the acting and style of the production. Because it is painstakingly well-crafted and soul-crushing to watch. Schwimmer, working from a script by In The Bedroom scribe Robert Festinger and Andy Bellin, creates what amounts to a stylistically interesting and heartrending cautionary example of the potential dangers of living in the digital age.

First Look will release the dark drama Trust, starring Clive Owen (Duplicity), Catherine Keener (Cyrus) and Liana Liberato (The Last Sin Eater) on Blu-ray and DVD on July 26.
Clive Owen is looking for Trust.

Chicago – There’s an unsettling potency to relationships that are born online. They take place entirely within the mind, which is capable of producing idealized images never to be equaled by reality. With the right stroke of keys, a savvy writer could potentially seduce a susceptible victim into emotional entrapment. That’s why the Internet is a predator’s playground.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
In light of recent rumors concerning Google’s plans for a facial recognition app, there couldn’t a more appropriate time for a film like “Trust” to be seen and discussed by families across America. A passing glance at the film’s premise may lead one to expect little more than a moralizing weepie destined for Lifetime, but such an assumption could not be further from the truth. This is a film of startling power and wrenching emotion, with several sequences that emit all the painful vulnerability of an open wound.

In Trust, innocence is portrayed strikingly, beautifully, and then quickly crackles away. Fourteen-year-old Annie (Liana Liberato) is raped by Charlie (Chris Henry Coffey), an online pedophile. Lured to a hotel room, she shows herself to him in a stark red bra and panties, yet visually it is the startling blue of the wallpaper surrounding her that seems to greatly signify her loss of innocence. This is a pitch perfect moment, a snap of the film’s sensibilities; as ominous as this image might seem, it is quite a delicate and inspired one.
Trust’s tale is cautionary – there are a lot of familiar movements and situations – and yet the film elevates itself by being about the emotional impact of this tragedy. There are many mesmerizing flourishes; there is an intricate standoff of perspective between her and her father (Clive Owen): she is engrossed in her own feelings, a constant...

David Schwimmer is bringing his directing talents back, this time around not so much on the comedy level though. This time he's delivering 'Trust' which is a thriller that will star Clive Owen, Catherine Keener and Viola Davis. Check out the trailer after the jump.
From the Press Release:
Annie (Liana Liberato) meets a boy on the internet. He’s cute, he’s her age and he really seems to like her. Her parents have no idea. But then the boy confesses that he’s actually a little older than Annie. Still, her parents are in the dark. By the time this “boy” lures Annie to meet him, she is so smitten with the idea of him that his true identity barely matters. Annie’s parents (Clive Owen and Catherine Keener) find themselves facing every parent’s nightmare.
Trust is a potent drama that cuts to the core of contemporary family life.

Our friends over at The Playlist have been very quick on getting Tiff news up and here’s the latest: the trailer for David Schwimmer’s Trust, starring Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, and Viola Davis. The plot of this film seems pretty creepy and odd for a Tiff film, but here it is (in my own words): a high school gal gets the unfortunate luck of meeting an online predator (Chris Henry Coffey) in real life and winds up a victim of molestation. Her parents are played by Clive Owen and Catherine Keener. Like any father would do, Clive’s Daddy goes on a fast track to nail down the sick person who did this. Viola Davis plays the girl’s therapist.
