Director Dawn Porter's acclaimed feature "Gideon's Army," becomes available on Netflix's streaming platform today, July 8, 2014, and you're strongly encouraged to check it out. The film be summarized as follows: 3 young, idealistic public defenders in the Deep South - Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander and June Hardwick - struggle against long hours, low pay and staggering caseloads to ensure justice is served for America’s forgotten poor. There's a melancholy that runs through the entire documentary, as we get to know, quite intimately, 3 of the 15,000+ men and women public defenders in this country, as well as the many clients each represents. Despite...

"Gideon's Army" sounds like a religious group distributing Bibles. But the HBO documentary premiering Monday, July 1, is a fascinating study of another group of true believers -- lawyers committed to representing those who can't afford attorneys.
Filmmaker Dawn Porter uses her experience as a lawyer and as a TV executive to tell a story that resonates. The title is based on the 1963 Supreme Court decision granting suspects legal representation.
Porter chronicles the sort of lawyers most people don't know about: public defenders in the Deep South.
"The most frequent question they get is, 'How can you represent those people?'" Porter tells Zap2it. "If you think about our popular culture, what you see are prosecutors as crusaders of justice. As a result, when you see defense lawyers, they are crooked; they are tricky."
Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander and June Hardwick buck all odds to do their jobs. They have...

"Spock, I do not know too much about these little Tribbles yet, but there is one thing that I have discovered. I like them … better than I like you." –Dr. McCoy, "Star Trek" (1967)
Greetings from the apocalypse! The trouble with Tribbles is not how cute they are but how much they multiply, or in the case of "Star Trek Into Darkness," the silly plot point for which they cameo. That's the only thing I'll spoil from that movie (besides that it stinks), but luckily there's some sweet alternatives this week that boldly go where no J.J. Abrams movie has gone before … coherence.

Oh boy. "Star Trek Into Dumbness" finally fulfills J.J. Abrams' five-year mission to run this franchise through a Cuisinart of stupidity. I would need a spoiler avalanche to make a proper case for how this sequel squanders classic characters and scenarios from...

Porter Profiles Public Defense With Appreciative Probing
Before dipping her toes into the film world as an executive producer on films like Serious Moonlight and Showtime’s The Green, debuting director Dawn Porter worked as an attorney for ABC Television. So, it’s no wonder that with her first docu feature she approaches the legal system with a critical eye while paying tribute to the men and women that work in the paperwork-filled trenches of lawyership as valiant, but under-appreciated public defenders. Following a trio of Georgia and Mississippi based attorneys as they inventively fight for the freedom of their clients in the face of moral axioms, mounting caseloads and suffocating six-figure student debts, Gideon’s Army veritably asks, with such professional pressure and often thankless clientèle, is justice for all even possible?

This is terrific news. Syfy‘s special effects makeup artist competition Face Off is one of the best competition shows currently on TV. Currently in its third season, Syfy has now picked it up for a fourth. Lacking most of the over-hyped drama of some other competition series, Face Off poses interesting weekly challenges and teaches us a great deal about the art of effects makeup. Plus it looks cool.

While Chuck Palahniuk maybe the voice of our restless generation, his books are quite tricky to pull off in a movie format. While Fight Club has gone on to become a classic, only Choke has been made since.
According to the producer (via /Film), Invisible Monsters has secured TV director Samir Rehem to develop the film. no financing or start date has been finalized.
Here’s the plot of the book:
Invisible Monsters initially unnamed narrator was once a beautiful fashion model. But only to draw the attention of her parents away from her brother, Shane. The narrator has it all until the fateful day of the accident where the bottom half of her face gets completely blown off leaving her with nothing more than top teeth and a tongue that hangs out of the gaping wound.
Now unable to speak and constantly wiping drool from her mouth, the narrator still gets attention,...

Chuck Palahniuk's novel Invisible Monsters has been optioned off and on since 2001, with multiple writers taking a crack at a script, and multiple producers trying to get together a cast and financing. Nothing has worked out, but in 2008 Cameron MacLaren started looking into the option. In March 2010 he managed to secure the rights to the novel, which tells a tale of "a disfigured ex-fashion model, a pill-popping drama queen and a sexually confused vice operative who embark on a road trip fueled by a radical new form of self-discovery as a means to reinvent themselves." Now there is a director for the project: TV director Samir Rehem, who has credits on Degrassi: The Next Generation, and Skins. The news was announced by the producer, who says he's been working for "the last twenty months" on the script, taking notes from Chuck Palahniuk on ways to both remain faithful to...

Despite having written many stories that seem to lend themselves to films, Chuck Palahniuk has only had two of his novels successfully adapted to the medium. The first of those is easily the most famous, that being David Fincher‘s Fight Club. Widely regarded as one of the best films of the 90s, it’s lived on to today through its smart script, but particularly Brad Pitt‘s iconic portrayal of Tyler Durden. (Who, ironically enough, is the cause of so, so many people misunderstanding the entire work.)
The other is Choke, directed by character actor Clark Gregg. Even though it boasts a fun performance from Sam Rockwell, it’s a mostly forgettable sex comedy, although at least has some nice moments throughout. Other takes on the guy’s material have been attempted, with a cast already having been assembled for Snuff, but how that can be properly told in...

Truth time, FOMAFers*, I found this webcomic a couple years late. Now, don't get me wrong, it's still going... but I know out there in cyberspace, someone will snicker when they see this week's choice. I can see them now, sipping a Brandy Alexander, puffing away on a grape cigarello. I can see them, and frankly, I hate them. Anyways, back to the topic at hand. On a recent tour of the internet (which seems to get bigger every day, I tell h'yew h'whut, I came across a comic that made me chuckle. I skimmed back across a few more strips, and more laughs fell from my mouth. Two hours later, I'd realized I forgot about addressing my save-the-dates with my fiance, and was promptly put in the dog house. Because I was in the dog house anyways, I cracked open a browser, and continued laughing until the wee hours of the morning.

Chuck Palahniuk, the author behind David Fincher’s Fight Club and Clark Gregg’s Choke, opening in theaters this Friday 9/26, pens intelligent, well-written junk food. I enjoy reading all his books, and even have a friend I nicknamed Brandy Alexander after the transgender lead character in Invisible Monsters, yet whenever someone asks me the plot of a particular novel that isn’t Invisible Monsters, I draw a blank. I mean, I’m certain I’ve read his books, just like I’m certain I ate dinner last Thursday, I just can’t tell you exactly what it was. So when I learned I had an email interview with the author himself scheduled I had to dig out my old copy of Choke</em ...
