All that glitters certainly isn’t gold, as “Glitter” cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson knows all too well. During a recent interview, Simpson told IndieWire that the newfound cult fandom around Mariah Carey’s 2001 film debut is staggering, as “Glitter” is “one of the 10 worst movies.” The “Center Stage” and “Under the Tuscan Sun” director of photography looked back on the feature that was released September 21, 2001 — after its soundtrack came out on 9/11.
In the film, Carey stars as a young singer who overcomes an abusive childhood to reach stardom alongside a toxic boyfriend. “Glitter” was directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall and cleared $5.3 million at the global box office against a $22 million budget. Carey developed the story behind “Glitter” with “What’s Love Got to Do with It” screenwriter Kate Lanier and playwright Cheryl L. West. Padma Lakshmi, Eric Benét, Max Bessley, Terence Howard, and Da Brat also starred.

Fifty years into hip-hop, we've gotten used to decades of headlines proclaiming the genre's culture is homophobic and misogynistic - that generations of queer talents were forced to the peripheries and into closets until today's mega star rappers like Tyler, the Creator, Lil Nas X, and Cardi B busted down the doors to a new chapter. But that's not actually the full story of queer people in hip-hop. They've been at the forefront and in the underground innovating the genre since it started. Back in hip-hop's adolescence - when it was as playful, juvenile, and wacky as the kids breathing life into it on the playground - hip-hop was more fluid.

Once upon a time, Lil' Kim gathered Missy Elliott, Da Brat, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Angie Martinez to record a sequel to her "Hardcore" offering "Not Tonight." Together, at the height of their careers, the seasoned rap stars and a "rookie on this all-star team" (Martinez) released their 1997 hit "Ladies Night Remix," one of the greatest female collaborations in hip-hop history. Not only did the iconic, femme-forward track dominate on radio, sweep up a 1998 Grammy nomination, and become an official girls-night-out staple, but its massive success set the tone for what future female rap collaborations would aspire to be, even to this day.
Kim's original "Not Tonight" is raunchier than its remixed anthem, as it sounds more like a sultry after-hours track where the rap star doesn't mince words about her demands for lip service - "I don't want d*ck tonight / Eat my p*ssy right." But the "Ladies Night Remix,...

Hip-hop has transformed music, and the world at large, since it was conceived 50 years ago. In a relatively short time, it's made a massive impact on every aspect of pop culture - and fortunately, there are a lot of great documentaries that chronicle the unforgettable, twists, turns, and triumphs that made hip-hop what it is today.
Many of these documentaries offer fascinating insights into hip-hop's exponential growth, such as 1995's "The Show" and 2016's "Hip-Hop Evolution," which both examine exactly how the genre became a worldwide, multibillion-dollar industry. Some of them also focus on individual artists, like 2003's "Tupac: Resurrection," a documentary narrated entirely by Tupac Shakur himself. Others focus on specific music scenes, like Ava DuVernay's "This Is the Life," which centers Los Angeles's alternative rap scene in the 1990s, while others delve into the technical aspects of hip-hop and rap, like Ice-t's...

Women in hip-hop are getting a major spotlight from Netflix next month in a new limited docuseries. Per the streamer, "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" aims to recall the history, impact, and influence of women in the culture, as well as "their role in the genre's 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day."
The trailer, which was released on July 26, plainly states that "Black women are crushing it in hip-hop right now," from "dominating the charts" to "being the ultimate influencers of the culture." So, in their own words, the docuseries gives women in hip-hop the floor to share their stories and honor the sisterhood that's contributed to their success.

The song and the video were instrumental in solidifying his spot as the hottest new rapper in the game.

The former star of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Porsha Williams, has recently gone under fire for a post that she made that was intended to be a tribute to all of the amazing women rappers that have paved the way for younger rappers.
However, there was a slight hiccup within the post that Porsha missed, which brought concern to many about where Porsha stands regarding Nicki Minaj.
In the photo that Porsha reposted, there were many old-school female rappers such as Mc Lyte, Lil Kim, Da Brat, Missy Elliott, and many more.
One of the female rappers included Nicki Minaj.
Porsha Williams did not read the entire photo when it came to Nicki Minaj’s photo because, over Nicki Minaj’s picture, the words “not you” appeared in her Square.

My understanding of hip-hop has always been rooted in fellowship. Seeing the way it brings people together is such a magical experience to witness. Walking into the Kennedy Center with my mom on Friday night for Mc Lyte's "I Am Woman: A Celebration of Women in Hip Hop" felt like I was on my way to a family reunion. I watched all the aunties and uncles pour into the theater in their flyest gear - from bamboo earrings and Kangol hats to Adidas tracksuits and sneakers - all ready to let loose and bask in a glorious celebration of women in hip-hop.
The event, which was part of the Kennedy Center's 50th anniversary, was the epitome of sisterhood. I grinned ear to ear at the sea of Black women laughing, dancing, and rapping along to the lyrics of performers like Trina, Remy Ma, Tierra Whack,...

I hold strong to the belief that you shouldn't mess with perfection but in the case of Cardi B and Megan thee Stallion's "Wap," I prefer to think of this exercise as going the extra mile to reach a god-tier level of transcendence. The single and music video are collaborative masterpieces (which I would know a thing or two about) with the two rappers alone, but the addition of some key voices in a mega-remix would make "Wap" a historic record among the likes of Lil' Kim's "Ladies Night (Not Tonight Remix)" featuring Missy Elliott, Da Brat, Left Eye, and Angie Martinez and Moulin Rouge! version of "Lady Marmalade" with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa, and Pink.
Ahead, I've rounded up a list of several artists that would not only look damn good in those sexy, luxurious looks from the video but would take "Wap" from a certified bop to legendary status.

For two months, Variety’s writers, editors and photographers have worked on putting together our annual Pride issue. Given the nationwide outcry and widespread protests in response to police brutality and the senseless death of George Floyd, we considered postponing the edition.
But as we discussed it among our staff, we were reminded that Pride and activism go hand in hand. The Lgbtq rights movement was born out of the June 28, 1969 Stonewall riots. After New York police raided the Greenwich Village gay bar, arresting and assaulting its patrons —- many of whom were queer people of color — thousands of members of the Lgbtq community took to the streets to protest discrimination. The riots became a rallying call for equality.
Too often, the stories and voices of members of the Black queer community have gone unheard. In our issue, Daniel D’Addario profiles “Pose” star Indya Moore about how they’ve been...
