Dune (2021)
A slow starter but good.
I'm really looking forward to Part 2 as I hope it dies more to bring the emotion and spectacle which the novel clearly provides - the reason it is a great novel, SciFi or not. I'll be hated for this but the casting is wonderful with the possible exclusion of 'Paul' - I find him too insipid in this part though the clips for Pt2 seem stronger. I hope this is the case. It's also slow moving given all that has happened. I assume they're trying to build but LOTR proved you can ebb & flow ovet more than one movie! This is its biggest flaw to me. Still - so hard to live up to the novels with movies like this & this is a good but not great start. Hoping Part 2 picks it up!
Dune (1984)
Given the mammoth undertaking this deserves more credit.
Dune is a mammoth novel and a classic. It bears comparison to The Lord of the Rings. Similar length novels but here they ciukd only get the backing and funding for a single & comparatively short movie. If you've read the book you may find your reactions mixed. It manages to convey much of the heart of the book but loses much of the details and subtlety which make the book a must have. The cast is extraordinary for its time - a lineup of known & unknown the majority of whom are good or great actors. I think that what they have done in a pre CGI & Green Screen effects world is also amazing & impressive.
Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (2023)
Try hard mix of Grease, Glee, SitCom & lots of things.
It tries too hard combining Grease with Glee, a SitCom and every other musical wanna be. It has some really good moments but on the whole it struggles to find itself. Too many copied moments which can't and don't live up to the original. This show tried to tackle too many topics in its first season so tended to get a bit 'messy' with multiple storyline's with messages competing for focus. .Therrs talent but they're not given the chance to really shine except for occassional numbers. The writing let's them down but also some of them aren't 'stars' or lead material. Again there are too many competing for attention and there not as strong or supported by adults as the Gkee cast were. I'll admit it can be fun & the characters, well some of them, are sort of endearing. It's worth a second season though as it did get better as the season went on.
Farscape (1999)
Seriously underappreciated series!
I've loved this show since it first aired and it made me sad to see it dismissed and laughed at because there were 'muppets' involved. They weren't muppets - they were wonderful characters created by Jim Henson workshops who we came to care about, appreciate and live as much as the human or humanoid characters. It's galling that it's time was cut short because people didn't give it the chance it deserved - it was ahead of it's time! Now we accept digital/creature characters and celebrate them. It also led to the inevitable type casting of its main actors whose other major work found them reunited in another stellar SciFi Drama show. This is a show that deserves to be given a chance - it will surprise most with the emotions it evokes!
Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars (2004)
Farscape - most underrated SciFi show ever.
A fitting finale to this series which was dismissed by many because it had 'muppets' - those characters and all the characters came to mean a lot and it's such a shame this show didn't receive the lengthy run it deserved. Rich in background, messages, battles, relationships, heartbreak and fun this two part finale is definitely worth watching if you can find it! Maybe not as high in some ways as the TV show sometimes the digital effects aren't as good as the older style - but that's rare and more obvious with improved screen definition at home. The acting is first class and it's wonderful to see Australian actors as it was largely made here. Also interesting to watch the 2 main characters (sadly) hit the 'pigeon holing' that happens if you work in a SciFi or related area first - hard to break that type casting and they both ended up in another amazing series. Watch, be surprised and enjoy!
Marvel & DC's War on God: The Antichrist Agenda (2022)
Nothing really new here!!
Humanity has always been fascinated by the occult & struggled with belief systems. Why do we think so many wars are fought in the name of opposing deities? There have always been plays, books, stories & yes, comics written about the 'supernatural' -they help us grapple with good & evil & are not a bad just because they discuss or are based in legends of darkness. Humanity always looks to balance light & dark, good & evil. It has never led to an outbreak of devil worshipping or human sacrifices! These stories shld be enjoyed not condemned! The Exorcist didn't lead to possession/exorcisms. Let it be!!
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
Waste of such a great character....
Dexter was one of the truly great characters written for tv in the last 40 years.....yet each time they couldn't be bothered to write intelligent endings to match the basic Series episodes. Particularly disappointing in this series/mini series. They had a chance to give new life to a complicated and controversial character and his son. Instead they copped out with a disappointing, weak and poorly written, sappy ending. Characters lost brain cells and common sense and became less than two dimensional. Harrison turned into a weak, lesser human being and the idea of generational behaviour was just dropped - shame that they spent the entire season proving that if anything Harrison had less of a moral viewpoint than Dexter! Most disappointing is that this maudlin ending robs us of any chance to further explore this deliciously complex character and the relationship with his son! Such a wasted opportunity after all the hype and excitement about seeing such a truly great character again!
Supernatural: The Gamblers (2020)
The Gamblers
An almost perfect episode of this amazing show!! Keep them coming!!
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Godzilla deserves to rule the earth.
This movie is heavy handed on stupid humanity meddling and doing damage not good! It's hard to find a major human part who shows an IQ above 20!!! Predictable, truly annoying, but special effects are good - pretty much all this movie has going for it. Even the will he win or die moments are repeated far too much..... Tge fights are overdone and the whole planet is destroyed but mysteriously regenerates at what is implied as a faster than possible (breeding, growing, etc are set aside). Not what it could have been....no character except almost but not quite Godzilla that you really care about. Mother of Minsters is beautifully conceptualised - then dies like the proverbial moth - so - huh????? Sorry - fail....
Sanditon: Episode #1.8 (2019)
Appalling and totally inappropriate ending.
The author would never have sanctioned the butchering of this piece in this manner!! What a flat and horrid ending - not what any viewer would have been expecting and certainly not clever or well written enough to give it any merit! Have they left it open for a second season?? I actually think not. I think they thought they were being 'true to the times and actual reality of the era'. Probably true. This is not meant to be historically accurate 'reading' (in original form) but rather uplifting and diverting entertainment. Botched it at the very end. Shame for trying to be too clever.....shame!!
Supernatural: Byzantium (2018)
How do they do it?
14 seasons in and this show still manages to bring me to tears, have me on the edge of my seat and surprise me. Cudos to the writers, divine cast and crew. Not all episodes hit the spot lie this one - but that's an impossibility! I hope this show lasts a while longer because the 14 seasons so far have been a highlight and a blast!! Thankyou!!
