Hana to hebi (1974)
A Classic among the Roman Porno films
This movie along with Wife to Be Sacrificed were the standard for almost every Roman Porno film that came after. Based on the Oniroku Dan S&M novel, Flower and Snake. This was the first Roman Porno to have an S&M theme.
The story is a 30 year old man, still living with his mother who operates an adult novelty (magazines, photos & toys) store. The man's boss asks him to kidnap and train his wife who has been denying him during their marriage. While the man is inexperienced except for seeing his mother taking photo shoots obliges.
Keep in mind that although this film falls under the Nikkatsu studio's Roman Porno, that means romantic porno (not the western definition of porno), falls under the Pink Eiga movie category and only softcore at that. And in the 1970's Japanese film censorship was very strict. This film does have rope bondage and it is very real including suspension. There is also enemas and other things but is never shown on camera. All including sex scenes are strictly simulated.
The film itself often is rebuked by a western audience. But it had its place within Japanese (not mainstream) culture of the time. The bondage, sex scenes and fetishes are definitely part of the story. The characters and their development would make no sense without it.
The acting by the entire cast is first-rate. Naomi Tani, who was known as the "Queen Of S&M" is exceptional as usual. She would famously only appear in films with an S&M theme. The story moves along and nothing is just filler. I still think Wife to Be Sacrificed which was later the same year to be a better film. Still, this is outstanding.
This is one of five films I recommend to people that want to be introduced to Roman Porno or Pink Eiga films. I highly recommend it.
Chikan densha: Iyarashii kôi (1993)
Fantastic Hisayasu Satõ tho not his usual
A young man videotapes women being molested on trains. That's where he meets a young woman who travels trains. Together they connect thru the separate paths of their lives.
This is part of the Molester Train series of which there are many (over a hundred) although much darker as the earlier films were often more lighthearted. There are several scenes of women being molested on trains but it is not the main focus of the story.
While being a Pink Eiga film and directed by Satõ there actually is no explicit sex, minimal nudity and virtually no violence. What you do get is two very interesting characters and their lives. There are several dramatic moments that stand out.
Yumika Hayashi plays the female lead and is exceptionally good. For those unfamiliar with her, she was one of the most prolific AV (adult video) actresses as well as acting in Pink & mainstream movies & TV winning several awards. Several documentaries about her life and career were made.
This is not a normal Hisayasu Satõ film. But it is one of his best. Highly recommended.
Elvis Presley: From the Beginning to the End (2004)
Worst Elvis Documentary
First, for a subject (Elvis Presley) that has been extremely well documented, they either skip many facts or just make them up. They mention Bob Neal became manager but skip the fact Scotty Moore was actually Elvis's first manager. And what's with calling Scotty Moore "Winfield?" Yes it's his real first name, but the entire Elvis world knows him as Scotty. They also get most of the story leading to the first Sun studio session wrong as if they just made it up. There is even a few pictures on screen that are wrong.
There is virtually no actual Presley music, probably to avoid paying for licensing. Just several second snippets occasionally. There's also film footage shown at times seemingly unrelated to the narration. Like a TV news broadcast from 1984 (the date is in the screen) when the narration is about playing the Louisiana Hayride. Huh?
With so many excellent Presley documentaries you can skip this one.
Mofuku-zuma: Teimô nawa-dorei (1993)
Very dark character study
A prostitute that specializes in cosplay meets her client regularly for S&M sessions. She claims to have lost a baby. He claims his wife committed suicide because of playing S&M games with him. Through flashbacks and their somewhat regular S&M sessions we learn more about each.
This a very dark movie for Director Hisayasu Satõ. There is more than the normal number of sex scenes most involving bondage tho about average or less for nudity. There also is pubic-shaving, paddling, whipping, dildos, and choking although it's all pretty mild as it is softcore.
Noriko Akikawa is excellent in the lead role.
I will say it sometimes slows down but only when it's to develop the characters or story further. Flashbacks are lighted pink or blue. What made this film work is wanting to learn more and follow the two lead characters. The sex and bondage scenes are definitely part of the story so not to be skipped. But as I mentioned before I didn't think it very explicit. So don't be put off by it.
While not one of Satõ's best, it is one of his better efforts.
Euphoria (2011)
Only the first two of the six episodes make any sense
This is a review of the hentai anime. Not the TV series! This is an anime which means animated but still for adults only. This is based on a virtual novel you play like a game.
The premise is a group of high school students, one male, the others female are locked in a facility. In order to be released, the male, for each round must choose one of the female students and have sex with them. He will be told what "openings" of the chosen female will be used, how many times and how hard. Things such as bondage and worse may be used.
The first episode is interesting. The second was just a few sex scenes (animation of course) with little story development. The third episode was just boring. Even the sex scenes were boring. The last three episodes each consecutively made less and less sense. The sixth or last episode seemed to be more like an alternative version of the fifty episode.
The most extreme scenes are very brief. The extreme scenes in the second episode lasts only 20 seconds. There are short extreme scenes, often just still images especially in the first two episodes that do not actually exist in the story arc over the rest of the episodes. So really the story over the entire run doesn't make a lot of sense. The dialogue and sex scenes seemed to be written by an 11 year old boy who has watched too much porn but has yet to take a sex education class in school. Most of the dialogue is just ridiculous.
I can't recommend this anime. There are many much better to watch.
(Nama) tôchô ripôto: Chiwa (1993)
This will make your brain work harder
First, completely ignore the story summary listed for this movie. It's not even close.
A woman that works wiretapping people and had a relationship with a married man (that also wiretapped people) who seems to be comatose after a car accident. There is a belief the man had some ability with spirit photography. Additionally there are videos called KORIN sold and the woman receives one and plays it. I don't want to give anymore away as that's the point of watching.
Director Hisayasu Satõ let's the story unfold a little at a time. This being a pink Eiga it does contain the prerequisite sex scenes but I didn't find them particularly erotic and neither did they slow the movie down. Often they are part of the story. Kiyomi Ito plays the lead and is excellent as usual.
I found this movie to be an excellent mystery. It throws in the psychic abilities and connections which adds depth to the story. You had to think to understand where it was going along the way. Not one of Satõ's best but a very good watch.
As a side note: In one character's home there is a drum throne (a seat for playing drums) and it just kind of seemed out of place. Not sure why it was used.
Macabre: The Golden Age of Italian Exploitation (2009)
It's a documentary without much documentation
The first half (only 6 minutes) is mostly how they made the 1980 film Macabre from creating the script to the lead actress's role in making the movie. I haven't seen the movie and don't care to after seeing this so I will call it slightly interesting.
The second half is about Italian exploitation cinema in general. Most is about the film Cannibal Holocaust and making exploitation movies in Italy with Director Ruggero Deodato. This required subtitles (which doesn't match what he is saying) to translate Mr. Deodato's broken english.
We also see every so often Director Joe Dante talk about Italian exploitation.
This video is only 11 minutes, 22 seconds with the credits. Still, I learned almost nothing about Italian exploitation cinema which was why I watched it.
Kanzen-naru shiiku: Ai no 40-nichi (2001)
Disturbing but very interesting
This is the second in a 7 movie series using a similar theme. A middle-aged man kidnaps a 17 year old (as in the first movie, played by an actress in her 20's) to make his lover and companion. This has the lead actress telling her story after the fact to a therapist. I found this one much more disturbing than the first.
This has a much more somber mood. The acting performances were not nearly as strong as those in the first and lacked the same chemistry. They didn't show much emotion even when you would expect it.
I will say there was a better sense of realism than seen in similar Hollywood movies. Small details like wrist abrasions from handcuffs and using the bathroom. A stark contrast between Japanese & western films.
The story and characters I did find very engaging. Even tho very disturbing I felt drawn in to how the relationship develops. Disturbing but very interesting film.
Kanzen-naru shiiku (1999)
Surprising film
This is the first of a series of 7 movies that share a similar theme.
A man kidnaps a high school student to train (educate) to love him. Simple story.
The two leads are excellent and there is definite chemistry between them that has a lot to do with making the story work. The direction is interesting in that it's done as if we are almost secretly watching.
You would think & expect a lot of nudity but you would be disappointed. In fact the female lead is seen naked only for very brief times and at times she is naked but it is not explicit. Don't expect any explicit sex scenes either.
There are a few supporting characters that are played mostly for a little comic relief and to add some depth beyond the small apartment where most of the movie takes place.
This is an example of what a movie can be done with a small budget. The story, direction and acting made an excellent film.
Dan Oniroku kurokami nawa fujin (1982)
Decent Pink Eiga tho less pink than usual
The IMDB story synopsis is not exactly accurate. Yes a husband has gambling debts but he's not exactly trying to force it all on his wife.
This is a Roman Pink Eiga film. And written by Oniroku Dan. But be aware, there is little bondage/S&M featured. Yes there are sex scenes and nudity but not the primary focus. If you are looking for that, this film will disappoint you. Instead there is more story and the main character (wife) is much more developed for a Oniroku Dan story. I found it very interesting. Even the ending is not what I expected.
The acting is generally first-rate. Obviously a low budget.
Honestly, it was not what I expected but was a pleasant surprise. Not fantastic but enjoyable.
Ongaku (1972)
Interesting but tends to drag on too long
A young woman sees a psychiatrist as she can't enjoy sex and doesn't hear music. Much of the story is her telling the doctor of her experiences and some free associations which includes a sexual experience with her brother.
This is from prolific director Yasuzô Masumura although not one of his better efforts. Some scenes just drag on needlessly. While you might find this movie as a pink Eiga, it really isn't. There is some nudity but not much even for 1972 Japan. The sex scenes are not very explicit or erotic. They could have easily cut 20 minutes or more which would have drastically improved the pacing.
I have this a 6 out of 10 which is very generous.
Waver (2001)
There's a lot shoved into 3 short episodes except a story
The Japanese version with English subtitles is what my review is based on. There's an English dubbed track as well but I didn't use it. Mine is completely uncensored and explicit though of course animated not live action.
Man wins a prize and he and his girlfriend go to a mansion as part of it. After staying the night and having breakfast they get separated. He ventures thru the rooms of the mansion, often getting into sex or other games alternating with concern for where his girlfriend is.
Included within the three episodes is sex, anal, oral, bondage, whipping, dildos, candle wax, fisting, pissing, enemas, shitting, breast milk, Jack Daniels vodka (no, they don't really make it) and a few other things I leave you to discover. Should mention there are things that the character's response to is very muted to what would be in real life. Most of the sex or bondage scenes are fairly short in order to fit everything into less than 90 minutes of the three (28 minutes each) episodes total.
The story sometimes is preposterous. At times it jumps a bit without explanation so then doesn't make sense. I don't think they cared about the story except as a means to the next sex scene. The story does progress and there is an ending to the plot. I actually liked the ending. Some of the dialogue tho is ridiculous.
Still, I will say it was mostly interesting. I wanted to see what happens next. I just wish the story was more coherent.
The Orgy Machine (1972)
Had potential but they ruined it
Note: Most of the hardcore scenes were from the previously released "I Want You!" From 1970. Included porn Stars of 1972 include John Holmes, Jan Davis, Pete Dawson and Annette Michael. Uschi Digard appears in a strictly softcore capacity.
The story is Dr. Werner von Sperm has invented an Orgy machine that makes people want to have sex. (Yeah like a machine is needed for that!) He focuses his machine at various couples and threesomes and they instantly get horny and start having sex.
The sex scenes are often interrupted by Dr. Werner von Sperm's narration or him staring directly into the camera boasting of his success. So any excitement you might have watching a scene is lost when seeing his ugly mug. The scenes themselves are sometimes boring, sometimes above average. Some of the money shots are separate footage from the actual scene. Some scenes don't have a money shot at all.
What could have been a good early 1970's classic porn is instead a poor example.
Uwakizuma: Chijokuzeme (1992)
Intelligent drama
The story is centered in the Bedroom (also known as the sleeping room) but it's really on the Kyoko character who is videotaping a daily diary. I would explain further but that then gives too much away.
This is one of Hisayasu Satõ's more thoughtful films. You do need to pay attention. This is of course a Pink Eiga film so there is nudity and a few sex scenes but they are far from erotic although they often are part of the story. There is a bit of a surprise ending.
One noteworthy item of this movie is the Mr. Takano character that is played by Issei Sagawa. He was a man that murdered a woman in France, had sex with her dead body and ate much of her body. He was the inspiration for the song "Too Much Blood" by the Rolling Stones.
Kiyomi Itô who plays Kyoko is always excellent but is even better in this film. Definitely helped make the story work. Really an excellent Satõ movie worth watching.
Hotter Than Hell (1971)
Totally limp
I have this on VHS tape that runs just over one hour ten minutes so that is what my review is for.
Satan is concerned of not enough souls being sent to hell. He therefore sends his two devil sons to corrupt and recruit souls.
This movie doesn't work as a porn movie. Nor as a sexploitation movie. Or even just a movie. The story premise is fine but the execution is terrible. The dialogue is awful. The acting is awful. And yes even the sex is awful. This movie is proof why in most porn movies actors use Viagra.
Even with all the shortcomings they evidently needed to pad the movie a few minutes with one actress dancing (if that's what you call it) nude that's definitely not erotic, then smokes a joint, then lays in bed with a mirror focused as is the camera between her legs that also is not erotic.
This movie did everything wrong. I gave it a generous 2 out of 10 stars for nude girls although it was really a zero for me.
Rou pu tuan (1987)
It was good & bad
This is based on the same story as the later Sex & Zen. A man married a beautiful woman and has lots of sex. But decides it was not enough so leaves his wife behind temporarily to take an exam to further his career but moreso uses it to expand his sexual encounters with other women.
The story is there but mostly is played thru for humor that usually misses the mark and to lead to softcore sex scenes. The women actresses are all extraordinary beautiful. They all get fully naked. Abundant pubic hair is displayed in prominence.
This definitely pales compared to Sex & Zen. The script was just weaker here. The humor usually didn't work for me. Often it was more stupid than funny. Some sex scenes were erotic but not all. At times this movie just dragged. I can't really recommend this one.
A Climax of Blue Power (1974)
Average mid-1979's Roughie with hardcore thrown in
A security guard that's a police officer wannabe poses as a cop to take advantage of women for sex. He accidentally witnesses a murder and later decides that he can bring the woman killer to justice and be rewarded with his place on the police force.
This is directed by prolific director Lee Frost who probably also wrote the script. This is actually a very interesting story that is well paced. It also is hardcore porn. The sex sometimes gets in the way although it sometimes is part of the story. Most of those scenes I fast-forward thru as I didn't find most very exciting. It's interesting to note that Angela Carnon plays the murderess who does get fully nude but had a body double for the sex who doesn't look anything like her.
This was an interesting movie. The acting was just okay. Some of the sex scenes either were boring or just uninspired. Maybe went on too long. I think this worked better as a movie with some sex. It did not work as a porn with some story if that's what you want.
Seisaku no tsuma (1965)
Absolutely brilliant drama that makes you think
This is a remake of a silent film (unfortunately I have not yet seen) from 1924.
A period drama set in the early 1900's at the time of the Russo-Japanese war. Everything being factually correct as far as I know. A woman that was in an arranged marriage to an older man who died. She returns to the village she is originally from although still an outcast from the time she had left. She meets, falls in love and marries a respected and distinguished soldier.
Ayako Wakao plays the lead for which she won a couple of Japanese acting awards. This performance could have won an academy award. She is outstanding. I think one of the best actresses of all time from any country. The rest of the cast is excellent.
The direction by Yasuzô Masumura also excellent. The editing is seamless. Not sure what could have been improved. The script and story are totally engrossing from start to finish. Plus it gives you things to think about. That is why I rate this movie a 10 out of 10. It is one of my most recommended Japanese movies I make to friends. Definitely should be watched.
Follie di notte (1978)
Fake Documentary that totally Fails
A Fake documentary directed by Joe D'Amato. Amanda Lear, playing herself as host introduces each segment as well as sings two songs. The segments are usually just excuses for a woman or sometimes a couple to get naked. Several segments are just dancing and desperately needed a choreographer. There is some simulated sex. One segment includes uninspired & unsimulated oral sex with Marina Hedman who has done porn movies. One segment includes two woman who are supposed to be sexually engaged but seem adverse to even kiss. There is also a magician with his assistant of course getting naked.
Each segment is from a different location, like Las Vegas, Berlin, Japan, etc. The stupid thing is the audience doesn't change. In fact one redhead woman wearing the same red sweater is obvious in several locations! In Japan it's the same European people audience and not a single Asian person. The same J & B Scotch Whiskey bottles also appear in several segments. All examples of not even trying.
This just fails on every level. There are Joe D'Amato films I enjoy. This one was just a disaster.
Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy (1976)
Enjoyable! Don't be put off by the "X"
My version is 78 minutes and hardcore so that is what my review is for.
A musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Yes it is hardcore but actually there isn't much of it. Some is fake or simulated. One scene that is supposed to be a man's private part when it is shown it is just a dildo. One couple is supposed to be having sex but when the woman gets up you see the man is fully dressed. So don't think the sex comes first but yes there is actual sex.
Kristine DeBell is perfect for the part of Alice. The rest of the cast is very good with a couple of exceptions. The dancing could have been much better choreographed. The music is actually very good. I won't say the humor is laugh out funny. Instead I'll say much is amusing. There are some continuity issues but they're not awful.
All in all it was enjoyable to watch. And that is the point.
Umagoya no reijô (1991)
Don't think Director Hisayasu Satõ knew what this was about either!
Not sure if it was the print used to make my DVD or from the original cinematography but most scenes are so dark you can't tell what is happening. In one scene that takes place in three minutes it begins in twilight but bright enough to see everything to 30 seconds later only background building lights can be seen. I guess you can just use your imagination what's happening but then you don't need to watch this movie at all.
Basically the story centers around a woman living by a beach who thinks she can hear her horse. Nothing in that regard is proven. Along comes a man who is recording sounds. Mainly sounds of silence like the sky. Then two men and a woman who are creating art using mannequins. Where it goes from there I am not sure and yes I watched the entire movie. There is an ending to the story but that doesn't make much sense either.
It's a Pink Eiga film so there is nudity and a few sex scenes although it's too dark to see. There is supposed to be the woman manually pleasuring her horse but you need to use your imagination again as you can't see it.
It's just a broken story without any direction. Satõ must have slept thru the filming. Just skip this turkey. You won't miss anything.
Chotto kawaii aian meiden (2014)
Not the worst is the best I can say
This Movie is s rated R18+ but it actually is very tame. But yes it's a sexploitation movie with a very thin plot. A girl enters a school, falls for another girl and then ends up in an after school club that is about giving and receiving torture where the same girl attends.
So most of the movie is torture and nude masturbation scenes. Not much dialogue. That includes some whipping that has any marks added later and some maggots that don't get too involved. Plus several scenes of rope bondage. Much of the scenes with nudity they use a soft filter that gives a foggy visual. Not sure if it's an artistic attempt (that fails) or to cover up any possible exposure that would alarm the Japanese censorship. Don't expect to see much. Most scenes are not very erotic.
The cast are all attractive and gravure models. Their acting is alright especially considering their only real movie.
The result is a movie that often drags. Not very exciting. No it's not the worst movie. Or even the worst sexploitation movie. It's just not very good.
Oppenheimer: The Real Story (2023)
Interesting tho Mediocrity
J. Robert Oppenheimer is an interesting subject and so this documentary is interesting. But the Talking Heads spout a lot of conjecture. Actual facts were in short supply. I think they interview only one person that actually met Oppenheimer and they had no knowledge or contact from during or before Los Alamos. Curious I don't recall them mentioning when he was married and had kids until towards the end that he started visiting the Virgin Islands with his wife.
This easily could have been edited to under 30 minutes (from 98) without losing any real content.
If you really are interested in the high points (they don't go very in depth) of Oppenheimer's life and do not know any more than the fiction movie than it might be worth a watch. Otherwise there are much better biographies of his found on YouTube.
Tenshi no harawata: Nami (1979)
Unfortunately, A Director with a split personality
Nami Tsuchiya this time (The name not the character is reused) is a journalist for a women's magazine. She is doing a series of articles on the experiences of rape victims often hounding them for pictures and an interview. Along the way she meets a man that they share a connection with the research.
The first hour was very interesting. Does a deep dive in the experiences of the rape victims and their current situations. You also get Nami's perspective as she both sympathizes with the victims as she doggedly pursued them. The last half hour it becomes very surreal including several dream sequences. The characters towards the end don't even do things you would expect normal people to do. Several WTH moments.
I was very engaged in the story until the last 30 minutes. Then it all went south. A movie I would have rated a 7 or 8 ended up a 6 or more accurately a 5.5.
Tenshi no harawata: Akai kyôshitsu (1979)
Solid melodrama that makes you think
A man that produces erotica (not porn as other reviews say) watches a porno movie that appears to show a rape at a high school and becomes infatuated with the girl that appears in it. He later meets the girl but she's not what he expected, they arrange to meet again but it's a missed connection.
This is the second (of six) movie in the Angel Guts series. Still, the only real connection to the first is the female lead is named Nami Tsuchiya although a totally different character. That name is used in every film in this series and Writer Takashi Ishii uses the same character name in a few other movies. Scenes of rape appear again although it's not the main focus.
I didn't like the first movie in the series, Angel Guts: High School Co-Ed. This movie I enjoyed. While this is a Pink Eiga film and there are several sex scenes which are a part of the story, it is the story itself and characters that kept my attention. This is really a story about power dynamics. Who really is in control. It gave me a lot of thought.
The acting is well done. Some people will not like the content but they probably will not like most Pink Eiga films. For everyone else I highly recommend what this Angel Guts movie.
