"A Climax of Blue Power" is hostile and gritty, and without a trace of political correctness. It also plays like a real movie, with a plot, characters and believable acting. There's even a car chase. Carns is effective in his role, his physical attractiveness (he sort of looks like a young Kurt Russell) never overshadowing his creepiness. Carnon, who's made numerous softcore movies ("Drop-Out Wife," "Booby Trap"), is another standout. (Incidentally, Carnon's scenes in this movie all appear to be softcore; an obvious stand-in was used for the hardcore close-ups). Also appearing are Frost's frequent producing partner Wes Bishop, as a detective, and Uschi Digard in a non-sexual and, surprisingly, fully-clothed cameo.
Director Frost made some of the most stylish roughies of the 1960s ("The Pick-Up," "The Defilers," "Hot Spur"). "A Climax of Blue Power" essentially uses Frost's roughie template and repackages it in a hard-X format. Though the movie has a few shaky production and story issues at its beginning (like why does a hooker keep flagging down johns in front of a police car and an unconvincing day-for-night scene), this is a must for fans of Frost's work, as well as aficionados of rough sex.
Stuck in a low-paying, dead-end job as a night watchman in a shabby warehouse, Eddie has plenty of time to fume about the life he'll never have. So he does the next best thing: He buys a police uniform and outfits his car to look like an LAPD cruiser. In the dark hours before his night watchman shift starts, he cruises the streets of LA, looking for hookers and other women deserving to be "busted." When he finds them, he makes the arrest--so his women think--but once alone in his car, Eddie lays his hand on the table: He'll drop the charges if they put out for him. This they do, and we get to watch as angry, bitter Eddie rapes them every which way before ditching them.
The real LA police become aware that a horny citizen is impersonating a cop to extort sex from various women, but without a good lead, their case is stymied.
Meanwhile, as Eddie relaxes on the beach he overhears an argument in a nearby house which ends in murder. Worse, the woman's crime is labeled a suicide by investigators and their ineptitude only enrages Eddie further. Soon he hatches a plan to exact sexual revenge on the murderess, while taunting the tall-but-incompetent LAPD...but who will emerge victorious?
It seems like a very interesting erotic exercise that Lee Frost (a director more versed in R-rated plots) applies here, including explicit sex scenes, of course, and providing a certain realism to the violent vignettes.
In certain sexual acts one immediately senses the use of substitute actresses, as well as the technical resource of close-ups to avoid discovery. And that is where A Climax of Blue Power falters, a masterful film embedded in the underworld of commercial pornography.
The film follows Eddie, a misogynistic security guard who longs to be a cop. Rejected by the police force, he takes the law into his own hands, donning a disguise and patrolling the night. His world takes a twisted turn when he stumbles upon a murder, and his desire for justice takes a dark, violent turn.
The audience is thrust into Eddie's warped mind, witnessing his descent into madness and his brand of twisted justice. The discovery of a potential murder becomes a catalyst for his unhinged behavior, and the film does not hold back in depicting his sadistic nature.
One standout scene involves Angela Carnon, who plays a character at the mercy of Eddie's twisted games. Bound and helpless, she is subjected to his perverse desires, her screams muffled by the isolation of their location. The camera lingers on her terrified expression, accentuated by the shine of sweat and tears, as Eddie's shadow looms over her, a silhouette of impending violation. Her performance in this scene is a raw, visceral display of vulnerability and fear, creating a powerful dynamic that fuels the narrative's intensity.
"A Climax of Blue Power" excels in crafting a compelling narrative arc, ensuring the film is more than just a series of explicit scenes. The suspense and thriller elements are effectively woven throughout, creating a sense of anticipation and curiosity that complements the eroticism. The performances are committed, with I. William Quinn delivering a complex portrayal of Eddie, balancing his character's descent into madness with an unsettling realism.
However, the film's pacing stumbles at times, with some scenes feeling drawn-out and repetitive. While the extended sex scenes will appeal to enthusiasts of the genre, they may test the patience of those seeking a more concise, plot-driven experience. The film's brutal and sadistic nature also requires a strong stomach, as it pushes the boundaries of what some viewers may find comfortable.
In conclusion, "A Climax of Blue Power" is a bold, unapologetic entry into the world of adult entertainment. With a strong narrative foundation and committed performances, it offers a unique blend of suspense and eroticism. While it may not appeal to the faint of heart or those seeking a more refined approach to adult cinema, it is a memorable, incendiary experience.
