The Fly (1986)
9/10
Simply horror classic
21 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
David Cronenberg's 1986 film "The Fly" is a masterful exploration of the intersection between science, humanity, and the grotesque. Artistically, the film excels in its practical effects, showcasing the transformation of the protagonist, Seth Brundle, into a horrifying human-insect hybrid. The visual impact is both captivating and repulsive, a testament to Cronenberg's skill in body horror.

Philosophically, "The Fly" delves into themes of hubris and the consequences of unchecked scientific experimentation. Brundle's pursuit of transcendence through teleportation becomes a cautionary tale about the dangers of playing with the boundaries of nature. The film raises questions about the ethical implications of scientific advancement and the price one pays for tampering with the unknown.

From a psychological perspective, the film explores the gradual breakdown of Brundle's identity as he becomes more insect than human. This metamorphosis serves as a metaphor for the loss of self in the face of scientific obsession. The emotional depth brought to the character by Jeff Goldblum adds complexity to the narrative.

Overall, "The Fly" is a thought-provoking and visually stunning work that successfully combines horror with philosophical inquiry. Its impact on the body horror genre and its ability to provoke contemplation on the limits of human endeavor contribute to its enduring significance. I would rate it 9 out of 10 for its innovative approach, compelling storytelling, and the lasting impact it has had on both horror cinema and philosophical discourse.

A true masterpiece
8 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I would like to review this wonderful film, a visually stunning adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's classic novel of the same name. Directed by Aleksandr Petrov, this animated film captures the essence of the original story while presenting it in a unique and captivating way. The most striking aspect of the movie is its breathtaking animation style. Petrov used a technique called "paint on glass" animation, where he painted each frame on a glass surface. The result of this painstaking process is a truly artistic and mesmerizing visual experience. The film's use of color, texture and fluidity of movement creates a dreamlike atmosphere that draws the viewer into the world of the old fisherman Santiago and his epic battle with a giant marlin. The story closely follows Hemingway's novel, focusing on Santiago's lonely journey into the sea in pursuit of a powerful fish. The film captures the essence of Santiago's determination, his relationship with the sea and the inner struggles he faces throughout his ordeal. The film effectively explores themes of perseverance, endurance and the complex relationship between man and nature. The pace of the film may feel slow to some viewers as it takes time to delve deeper into Santiago's thoughts and emotions, but this pace allows the viewer to connect more deeply with the character and appreciate the philosophical and existential undertones of the story. The voice acting, especially that of the main character Santiago, is extremely well done and adds depth and authenticity to the characters. The lack of excessive dialog makes the movie all the better as it allows the animation and visuals to convey much of the emotion and meaning of the story. While it is a well-crafted adaptation, it may not be suitable for those looking for fast-paced action or elaborate plots. It is a thoughtful film that succeeds in its artistic presentation and the emotional resonance it creates through its simplicity. It stands as a remarkable cinematic achievement. Its innovative animation style, combined with a faithful adaptation of Hemingway's story, results in a film that is both visually captivating and emotionally evocative. This is a must-see for those who appreciate the artistry of animation and enjoy thought-provoking narratives that explore the human spirit and its connection to the natural world. My score is 10.

Masterpiece

Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill Vol. 1 was an immersive and action-packed cinematic experience that drew me into a story of revenge and redemption. The film follows the Bride, brilliantly played by Uma Thurman, on her journey to settle scores with her former allies, the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Tarantino's superb storytelling style, combined with extraordinary choreography and stunning visuals, creates an intense and stylish atmosphere throughout the movie.

The non-linear narrative keeps the audience engaged by gradually revealing the motivations behind the Bride's quest for revenge. The film's homage to martial arts and exploitation genres adds an exciting and unique flavor to the storytelling. Uma Thurman's performance as The Bride is nothing short of exceptional and adds a compelling depth to the character, making her journey all the more fascinating.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 is not without its controversial aspects, especially in terms of the level of violence and graphic depictions. However, the violence in the movie serves as an integral part of the revenge-driven plot and homage to classic martial arts movies. The scenes of intense bloodshed are quite primitive for the time period, but they are still beautifully depicted.

The film's bold and unapologetic approach to themes of revenge and empowerment make it a memorable entry in Tarantino's filmography. If you appreciate stylish action, memorable characters and a unique storytelling style, this is a must-see. I rate it 9 out of 10 for its cinematic excellence and ability to leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

A Kubrick classic
23 July 2023
The movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" is really amazing! Kudos to Stanley Kubrick, the man's directorial skills are dazzling. I felt mesmerized as I traveled into the depths of space. Especially that music completely changes the atmosphere, it takes you to another world.

In the movie, there are few words, but the glances and gestures are so meaningful that sometimes you don't even need words. It is incredibly enjoyable to decipher what is being said through facial expressions in those scenes. Not to mention the symbols that push the viewer to think. It is possible to make different interpretations about the movie, everyone has their own interpretation.

This movie deals with big themes like evolution, the impact of technology. Questioning the place of man in the universe, thinking about the relationship between man and machine made me ask very serious philosophical questions. A lot of thoughts swirled in my head while I was watching it.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" really has an important place in the history of cinema. The visual effects, the music, the in-depth narration of the characters... It's a mesmerizing experience. Definitely a must watch. But let me warn you in advance that it will be a boring movie for those who have a lively expectation.

Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a philosophically thought-provoking science fiction film that takes viewers on a cosmic exploration of humanity. Jodie Foster gives a brilliant performance as Dr. Ellie Arroway, an astrophysicist driven by curiosity and the search for extraterrestrial life. Zemeckis' masterful direction blends scientific discoveries with heartfelt drama, keeping the audience engaged throughout the movie. The film's striking visuals, combined with its philosophical and ethical themes, invite viewers to reflect on their own beliefs and their place in the universe. Despite some pacing issues and complex scientific concepts, "Contact" remains a fascinating and profound cinematic experience that makes us reflect on the mysteries of the cosmos. I also recommend you to read the book of Carl Sagan's novel after you finish this movie inspired by his novel.
