Reviews
The Midwich Cuckoos (2022)
Great adaptation
Really enoyed - I love it as it sticks pretty closely to the heart of book & brought it up to date - having to cope with the prevalence
of social media.
The casting & directing of the children is well done.
Pieces of Her (2022)
what a mess
Badly directed & badly written.
Full of pointless, relentless back story and weak characterisations. It wasn't intriguing.
I notice that it was mainly a female team production - it's a shame they've done female production such a disservice.
The Village (2004)
Worse the second time around
I seem to remember liking The Village the first time I saw it - near its release.
Why do they speak in stupid stilted English?
Why the 'Edwardian' clothes?
How long is that community sustainable when the very small gene pool kicks in?
A group of selfish adults that maintain the integrity of the community with extreme fear. How is that a better way to live than the lives they left behind?
The King's Man (2021)
Should be much better
With such an amazing cast, it should be so much better. I hated Kingsman & this is just as terrible. Mannered, too self conscious, rotten script & badly directed. Surely the actors must have been able to tell on their first read of the script??? & what a waste of Gemma Arterton..
The Midnight Sky (2020)
I liked this film
Nice slow narrative. Shame so many reviews are so negative. There was a story which I loved & the characterisations were beautiful.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
#theturnofthescrew
The original story written by Henry James. I've seen better, scarier, less contrived versions. Many American actors with cod English accents. American version of living in England - there always has to be a 'tea' scene. Awkward & stilted. Hill House was bad so I hoped this would be better - especially because of the reviews. But same rotten acting, script & production.
Peterloo (2018)
Disappointing
I am so disappointed by this film that I'm angry. What a missed opportunity. To my shame, I'd not heard about Peterloo and, because it's Mike Leigh film, I wanted to see it. The production values were high. Maxine Peake was reliably fantastic (why is she billed below Rory Kinnear?), but the acting was mannered & you could see every thought process. I could have written the story of the lead up to the Massacre - it was pretty standard fodder. But maybe I'm being unfair because that was 200 years ago; plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. I wanted to know about the effect the event had on social history.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Could have watched this over & over
Fantastic production & cast. Brilliant that the songs were played in their entirety.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Tom Ford is obsessed women's fat arses
The beauty of the cinematography & the acting doesn't detract from the misogyny. Hopefully films like this won't be made frequently as women will realise they don't need to submit
to the pressure as a result of #metoo.
