A rare gem
25 May 2020
This is fun. Plain good police/buddy movie spoof in beatiful French language. There are many little jokes, visual, musical and references if you pay attention. I really liked it, out for a second season and for anything these guys make.

My only complaint is that it is too short. It's a solid 9.

Penny Dreadful was Eva Green and Timothy Dalton for me
27 April 2020
I was disappointed when PD got the axe. I did not understand the rush ending, the sudden stop, but I thought maybe in the future there will be an onset. I though probably the creators ran out of ideas - now it seem the don't.

I really liked the first run, even though some of the threads were not so interesting. And the best of all those threads was the main, with Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. I'm sorry, but I don't want a surrogate with Nathalie Dormer. I just don't care and seeing other reviews: neither the others. 6.9? Really? Was it worth it?

Poor man's Nigella of Boondock
13 January 2019
A woman walks around in Hungary, eats and drinks alcohol. Those are her skills. And she is popular mostly in the conservative population. And she is modest, too: the show's title translated as Gastro Angel (that should be her). Isn't it obvious that with (popular) shows like that Hungary is where it is?

Touching down
4 November 2018
Hofi Géza was for the Hungarians, what George Carlin was for the Americans, or Coluche for the French. Since the death of "Hofi" they were waiting for the next coming, the Heir. In the beginning of the 2000s it seemed that Mr. Fábry could be the one. He excelled in stand up, he was nicknamed the Patter machine. He dared opposing the power using brilliant jokes. He got his own talk show, he became biased, criticizing always one side (the commies) and his talent slowly started to fade away. Quantity ruined quality. For over 15 years now he broadcasts dry, humorless propaganda. Pointless drivel on his past experiences, adding gipsy jokes, and later when it was required, migrant jokes. Mr. Fábry touched rock bottom (and he is still down there), after becoming court clown of the 2nd Orbán regime. Now he has a new/old show "Fábry" that is very similar to the old one (not on IMDB, yet). Mr Fábry lost everything he once stood for. The only thing keeping him on screen (and in the radio) are the owners of the public broadcast channels, who of course are the servants of the regime. A sad end for a brilliant start. An artist should never lay down to the power. Submission kills the talent.

Great for insiders
6 October 2018
I really don't know if this movie is approachable if you haven't lived in Hungary at the beginning of the 90s. For outsiders, it is probably yet another "funny" movie from Eastern Europe. Also the puns and the expressions used in Hungarian can't be rendered fully into English (or any other language). Even in Hungary it was criticized for making fun of socialism, that was anything but.

Still I loved this movie. After seeing it the first time in my high school years, I barely reached the bathroom, I literally almost pissed myself of laughing. I'd probably wouldn't have the same experience by revisiting it, still this movie is part of our culture. Many movies after tried to copy it and failed. For me it is a 9 and if you think I'm biased and nostalgic, you're absolutely right.

The Terror (2018–2025)
10/10
And yes, there's a need for something different!
6 June 2018
Don't misunderstand me, I love series of superhumans (be it mental or physical), I just love Sherlock Holmes, and sci-fi series, too. It's just after a while I fed up with the perfection, the all perfect lines and acts of the characters. The Terror is different in that the protagonists are everyday human beings. People with vice, mistakes, envy, anger and also honor, loyalty. The setting is great, the actors are superb, the dialogs (mostly) believable, no-nonsence. Not like many other movies/series where everyone, always speaks the perfect lines and you feel like they reading a book (ok, yes they acually do, but I shouldn't be aware of that). I felt the interactions between the character realistic, almost all of the time. I couldn't stop watching it. The only thing where I had problems was the monster. It wasn't living up to everything else. It looked stupid, moved clunky and unrealistic, and wasn't in any way terrifying (reminded of Falkor from the Neverending Story - how can you take it seriously?)... They should have avoid showing it - just the attacks and their result. The show is with me after watching for days now, it is a definite 10.

Flashy, entertaining and nothing you haven't seen before
2 June 2018
Lists many of the obligatory contemporary sci-fi topics: parallel universes, time loop, adds a lot of tearful eyes, love and betrayal. The creators played it safe, nothing too creative or risky here, all too predictable. The storyline got back to the original klingons are the baddies let's kick their butts. No high politics, no social commentary, nothing too deep. It is not bad, but it isn't good. Lukewarm.

Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2018)

How stupid you have to be to cancel this show?
24 May 2018
Let's see. What was the problem? 8.5 on IMDB? Lot of episodes above 9? Solid fanbase? Millions of viewers around the globe? This show was getting better and better... And Grey's Anatomy is continued for the 15th season. What is wrong with the world? How many demons GA has? Exactly zero? How many ripped off heads? Also zero? And how many chainsaws? Yep, 0. Ok, it has fake blood, but still Ash wins by miles there, too. This show is great, it is a solid 9 and that is rare. Let's hope that a network, with white collars' IQ above 60, will buy the franchise and continue till the cows come home.

Dejá vu, subpar CG and the stupidest ending since H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds
24 May 2018
It is another of the utterly superfluous and pointless feminist movies. Accent not on feminist, but on pointless, (although I know everyone who's out for revenge for thousand years male domination, will deliberately misunderstand and will vomit blood on me). I'm not against a feminist movie, I'm against a stupid movie. Why there is an all girl group against the ET, because the male soldiers failed... Would have been too hard to look for a convincing reason? Like genetics, anything along the lines of "female is the original, male is mutation" (which is true), so the ET (yes, I won't take seriously that alien), affects female genes differently than male ones. Or any pseudo-science blabla. No, it's because males failed. Please send after every lost battle women to succeed where men did not. How stupid is that? Still the movie is not all bad, it starts exciting, expectations raise, but in the end it fails miserably. How dumb that ending is? I've seen this (without giving away any part of the plot) like a hundred times in my life. From Wells to Dick to the Astronaut's wife and the list goes on. It is a movie you've seen a lot, with different actors. Typical Hollywood rebranding. That is why I mean this movie is superfluous. A cash in on Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac, but above that utterly pointless. BTW, if you have money for Natalie Portman, how come you don't have for proper CG. The FX here are from the 90s. Don't misunderstand me, I can live without CG, but here it is so bad (e.g. the rigging of the animals) that is distracts me. It should create a convincing world, animals with modified DNS, but Robot Chicken delivers better animation... It is a 5 movie, if you don't watch it, nothing happens, if you do, it is all the same.

Happy! (2017–2019)
9/10
Now, this is what you get if you let loose a comic writer
5 May 2018
  • hilarious, unbridled fun. I'm not saying shoot the producers, but they should only bring the money - that is their work. Otherwise, let the artist work unconstrained.
I've found Happy! after burying Ash vs The Evil Dead and through the veil of tears the light shone through. Christopher Meloni is pure genious, I enjoyed every minute when he was on screen. He plays not just with gestures and face, but with clothes, hair and even the air around him. I really liked the other characters, too. The casting was great, everybody is in hers/his place and doing a good job. Visually it is also great, I really liked the ideas come from comicstrips, the cuts, the shots. And the action goes on and on, without stopping, lying around, there is always tension interlaced with comedy. This is the magic potion, don't change the ingredients. After watching Happy! I read the comic. Usually if a movie/series was made out of comics, the latter is better (a lot - like Watchmen, V for Vendetta, etc. and the list is loooong...) or even at best (Sin City, probably, The Walking Dead, maybe and the list is shooort...). In this case the show is better. No offence here, it's also a work of Mr. Morrison. Still the show improves in every aspect the comic. To be frank, when I saw the synopsis, I was to pass if not for the favourable reviews and the good rating. If there is something I despise it's kids saving the world, pets talking (and saving the world) and cartoon cuties in live action movies - a major turn off (shoot Roger Rabbit!) So if I give a 9 to a show with similar defects, that means something. If the next season is as this good, it will be a 10. And that's top of the top.

Sophistry of a Hungarian intellectual Chuck Norris
19 February 2018
If your head is empty, this program fills it. Mr. Puzsér tells you what to think, how to think, what is true and what's not. From philosophy and history, to literature and quantum physics, from social sciences and arts to astronomy and economics, a plethora of knowledge. If you don't speak Hungarian you're missing out :) Hungary is filled with this kind of "intellectuals" who knows everything better and they know all the others are mistaking. Likes of Csernus Tibor, Szendi Gábor, Havas Henrik to name but a few. To be honest it is sometimes can be fun to watch (therefore the 2 stars), but mostly it's just tiresome wisecracks. Also ruins the image as a whole if you take in account that in most of the things he mentions now, Mr. Puzsér had the exact opposite view 5-10 years ago.

One of the best shows around
4 November 2017
One of the best shows around. The visuals, the story, everything adds up to give an experience you'll remember. The acting is great, too, except maybe Tessa Thompson, who is beautiful, but subpar as actress. She'd probably fit into almost many other show, but here the standard is just too high, and she feels pretended, overplayed even campy. Otherwise than that I can't say anything negative for the series, it is a must.

Watch it for Rufus Sewell (and not for much else)
23 May 2017
The main problem is with this series that it's utter fan-service. I've read Ph. K. Dick's novel a few years ago again and I was looking forward to see what the makers come up with. And I was disappointed. Badly. All in all, without giving away anything the story is basically a love triangle. In the novel there were tons of potential, historical, social, what-ifs, etc. But here the core the plot is whether you can trust someone you love. FFS, why? Why is that in the States if you have the money, you have to kill your creativity and use (overuse) panels. Mr. Dick rolls in his grave. If anything he was not a Lego story maker, who uses the same clichés all over again. After reading the book I was filled with thoughts, what if the other side have won, would it be over like the USSR or thriving, and so on. After the series my only question was: what was the purpose of it all? The actors are not bad, some of them miscast (like Joe Black), some of them great - as you might've guessed from the title: Rufus Sewell. His one of the best. So convincing as a nazi I almost instantly forgot that he is an actor, I saw only the nazi officer. If you watch the series, for any reason it should be his acting. Beside him Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (I saw him before mostly in movies where acting were secondary and kickin' butts primary) and Carsten Norgaard worth mentioning, they are really convincing and most of the supporting actors. Sadly none of the three main characters (the triangle) made me care. I just could not care less about them. I felt Joel de la Fuente out of place here. He LOOKS Japanese, that is obviously why he got the role, but all his gestures look fake amidst the other "real" Japanese actors. The problem is not that he is not Japanese, but that he is not good enough to make me believe he is. He overgesticulates, frowns, scowls as no born Japanese would - they hide their feelings - acting 101 from the internationally acclaimed book: How to act like you were Japanese and not just faking it. The other actor for I was thinking about quitting the show was The Marshall. As stupid a character as can be. He is the feared bounty hunter who weighs like 3 stones in armour. Convincing. Also the acting was subpar, and really sub. Maybe in a comic role, but... The ending is also predictable and stupid (the Hitler part). And the lost few shots, the obligatory cliffhanger made it even worse - I don't even care about the 2nd season. Sadly these things killed the show for me. I drag through, but only because I like to finish things, but only for that (and for Mr. Sewell). The show is like 2-3 points, Mr. Sewell is 10, hence the 6 I gave.

More of this, please!
4 January 2017
I'm not a big B(C)-movie fan, I just feel bad most of the time wasting my free time on a stupid plot, bad actors, cheesy CG, lousy editing, horrendous dubbing, you name it. But I think this show, especially the 2nd season is just hilarious. Lot of nerdy quotes from the original movies (that were never as much fun as the series), tongue-in-cheek references from other movies, really good special effects (the "anal" scene from the morgue will haunt me to my old days :) ), Bruce Campbell. Just great.

Hopefully we get many more seasons (with episodes of more than 20 mins, please).

Great anime spoof and CG Porn
19 October 2016
It took me a awhile to recognize this movie was a spoof. A spoof of almost every anime commonplace (and also hollywoodian commonplace) that there is. The invincible soldier (sorry SOLDIER) who lost his faith, orphans, evil who is evil for evils sake, flashy pop star hair on everybody (even freshly washed and dried hair on kids who live on the street), friendship surviving everything, crying bad boys, I can't even list all of them. All wrapped up in cheesy CG (say that many times), all shiny, glossy, glassy, gleamy, sparkles, sprinkles, chuckles. And of course no coherent story - nobody would need it. I mean: who needs story for a porn movie? Its just the visuals, a tour de force in CG. Yes we can (make the hair real), yes we can (make the water real), yes we can (make the skin real), etc. I liked the best when at two thirds of the movie heroes come out of the blue :) They just appear. They get introduced and start to fight :) WTF? Genius!

So I had fun watching it :)

Starts in the UK, but ends in Hollywood
29 May 2016
Starts interesting, but the 2nd half turns into a B-movie. Like Walking dead 7th season would be directed/written by Steven Seagal. It is full with illogical things that are only there for the show (the hero is a bicycle courier... I don't want to give away anything, but after finishing the movie think over the end-show again). The actors are good, the writing/directing is failing here. I really don't know what to add to this review, everything is so foreseeable. When I started the movie I hoped for the best and feared the worst, but in the end the second version came. The whole plot was thinned down to a male-female, badboy-goodboy cliché. I don't even know how could I spoil the story. The first part is an 8, the second is a ~3, so I gave 5.

Sense8 (2015–2018)
6/10
A great miss
10 February 2016
A cheesy parable on discrimination against LGBT people. The problem is it tries to sell itself as a sci fi flick... It has good ideas, but it's campy, sometimes ridiculous. A real kitsch binge. I got the pride message after 10 minutes and I agree, but to base a whole series on pride propaganda is an overkill. You want to educate? OK! But do it frankly, don't lie. Don't disguise it as a sci fi flick. What you do is counterproductive. This way you show gay people as brainless soap-opera fans who trade story, characters, consistent plot for loong artsy shots of (bi)sexual scenes played by Barbies and Kens. If you want to influence people - create values, do it like Morrissey in The Smiths.

The same moment S8 tries to fight against sexual prejudices, it reinforces social ones by using stereotypical clichés. Bollywood prince charming and princess to be who doesn't love him. The poor African guy trying to save his mother. The suppressed korean girl, who is a born fighter, and so on. A mix of bollywood, Mexican soap opera, Vandam B-movies, and so on.

Quotes from movies that influence real life decisions: so transparent. To tell people to do something it's not art. It's propaganda. Use metaphors, hide the message, make me search for it, make me think. Sense8 is simple and plain as an IKEA DIY guide (well most of them...). After the horrible sing-along at the 4th episode I decided to quit if there will be anything similar again. The song of 4 Non Blondes was one of the low points of western pop music, and here it was so forced, ridiculous it put me off absolutely. Then came the next blow with the bearing scene. What did they wanted to achieve with it?

Usually for a series it's great to see characters develop. There are episodes and episodes to represent them, to paint a picture. You grow to like them, or not, but they have some effect on you. In S8 there is nothing like this, the actors are not bad, but they don't have the material to act on. The characters are weightless, insignificant and they leave no traces. You try to care about them, but you just can't. My biggest problem is that many great ideas got stocked under an avalanche of kitsch. The makers could have built a really good series on them. The user score is on 8.4 now and that is a joke. Just as by anime series, where the results are influenced by the votes of a strong community, you get way overrated scores. The same here: the LGBT community shows its voice through votes. That won't change the fact that this series is just average...

Count Arthur Strong (2013–2017)
10/10
Don't believe the unhype! (If there is a word like that)
6 December 2015
This is one example when you should not go after the user scores (7.3, really?). First I thought that this show could not be any good according to some reviews, then I thought that Graham Linehan, you know the "IT Crowd man", can't fail so big. And I was right. I mean the second thought. This show is really good. I'm not the type who laughs aloud if front of the TV, or in the cinema, but sometimes I was wiping my tears watching the Count (or IT Crowd for that matter). I can't wait to see the 3rd season. After a while you just cannot not like the characters, especially Count Arthur Strong (Steve Delaney). In the beginning it felt stupid and overplayed, but after you get the hang of is, it's just amazing. Rory Kinnear and all the supporting actors are also great. This is sitcom as it should be. And a lesson to Hollywood, that you can do a Frank Drebin/Pink panther/Mr. Magoo-type of ridiculous entertainment well. I've decided not caring what anyone says, I'm going to watch anything Mr. Linehan created/creates/will be creating from now on. That means that I'm a fan of him (or something).

"But, ah, the end; if I could that forget!"
2 October 2015
I like it overall. Great visuals (mostly), really good actors, sometimes really convincing performances. The only thing missing is a really good script. That is the weak point of the series. In the end is always a letdown, like the makers want to put everything in parenthesis, all the work done up to the season end is seam to be in vane, all the great expectations ruined. The 1st season end made the whole story a joke. The 2nd's end was the only one acceptable. The 3rd's and 4th's are basically the same: stupid happy ends after a myriad of bloodshed - no clues given away. Okay, I know the series is a spoof, so I could take it as a gag on the "hollywoodian happy ends", but it could be done a lot better. This way it just ruins an otherwise potentially great show.

Gantz (2004)
3/10
Great miss
16 July 2015
This anime has everything you can hate an anime for... Usually Japanese cartoons are great because the medium gives the opportunity for artists to express themselves, their ideas even if they haven't billions of dollars for it. They can communicate thoughts through moving images, but in a price of a Hollywood car chase with blow ending. They can draw thing for a relatively tiny amount of money and they let the viewers imagination finish the job. The problem with Gantz is here the vision is missing. The makers had one idea and they tried to blow it up to a series. The content is almost none existent. They could have put the 26 episodes in max. 8. Every episode start with a recap, there are a lot of flashbacks just to show the same things again and again. You have to (HAVE TO) watch the OP every time and you hate ED every time it starts. Usually that isn't a problem at other occasions: by hearing them many-many times you get to like the song, but with Gantz it just won't work: especially the ED is annoying as f.ck. There are a lot of plot holes, inconsistencies - you get facepalms in almost every episode (the positive reviewers just missed this for some reason). There is a lot of fan service, violence, gratuitous nudity (the problem is not nudity, but gratuity - just to show some tits without serving the plot or anything). You feel like every character is a retard. You never develop any emotional bond to them, because they are just so unearthly stupid. They chit-chat or give a sermon when they are shot at, or in danger of imminent death. Sometimes (you think gloating) it's like they better be dead, it is easier for the rest of the world. The animation is subpar, that would be a minor annoyance if the plot would be OK. But it's not.

Pacific Rim (2013)
3/10
An opportunity of becoming a classic missed
30 March 2015
I only watched this movie because of Guillermo Del Toro, hoping for a new Starship Troopers, but sadly, where Verhoeven succeeded brilliantly Del Toro failed miserably. I was hoping for a great spoof on the Godzilla-geek culture. A movie to make fun of said movies, the pathetic/flatulent nationalistic-army-kitsch and of Hollywood altogether behind a mask of a sci-fi action movie. Sometimes, for a few seconds (e.g. the black-market) I had hope, but it was lost to end up in a deluge of clichés and cinematic commonplaces.

Verhoeven put the viewer in the skin of a fascist and he made them want to be one. In a fascist society you take the part of the fascist or the bugs. And given that no human can identify themselves with insects, you had to a be fascist. There were many-many details that were great, that had some deeper meaning, but I won't go deeper here, because this is a review about Pacific Rim. The actors were weak, but again in Starship Troopers, there were only one actor in leading role, Michael Ironside. The others were only bioscenery (Denise Richards, Casper Van Dien). Here we had Idris Elba, the others were only models, part of the decoration. (Yes, Ron Perlman and Santiago Segura, but they were not in leading roles).

So I was waiting for something that just did not come. The visuals were stunning, but boring: you see these monster/robots in every game/movie/tutorial, etc. A lot of work for nothing.

It is amazing how a bland and bloodless movie like Pacific Rim can attain a score above 3, but now it is on 7. No hope for humanity, let them kaijus come...

Vikings (2013–2020)
7/10
Don't sell your textbooks!
5 December 2014
This is viking fantasy not history, history is based on facts. Still it isn't bad. It's just not history. And why is that important? Because with the logo of the History Channel you might expect something more true to facts.

The vikings were connected to the west for hundreds of years before Lindisfarne. The king asks Ragnar Lothbrok: - Is there more land to the west? But we know they were trading there slaves/goods. Also to the east - archaeologists found even Buddha sculptures amidst their treasures. Also there were more than one ship alone at Lindisfarne. Also the vikings did not sail too much on open see - they were mostly shore- hugging. Almost everything connected to gods and myths in this series is visually bullsh.t. The bald goth priests escaped from a The Cure concert or the old Marilyn Manson guy. They just wanted to make them look good, (that sells more), not caring about how they really looked like. The makers had the skeleton of facts and names (Lindisfarne, Yggdrasil, Odin, Walhalla, etc) and everything else was built around it from their minds. That is not a problem. Only it is not history. And there were other stupidities like burning corpses 20 meters away from their houses.

So, if you want an adventure set in the viking era, this is for you: good actors, actresses - the casting is great. The screenplay is OK, too. Mostly predictable, but OK. You'll have fun, but don't put your hand in the fire for the facts...

Afterlife (2014)
9/10
One of the best Hungarian movies I've seen for a while
27 September 2014
I've read many times in the last few years, that a Hungarian movie is either artsy and indigestible for the average cinema crowd or brainless replicas of brainless Hollywood blockbusters (also replicas). I think this isn't true. I love art movies and I don't think it is a bad thing to digest a piece of art. If you have to think it over and over again, it stays with you. Many of my favorite movies took me a while to chew over and they become part of my life - I refer to them, I think about them, even years after first seeing the movie. A long story short: I'm a fan of art flicks and not against a good(!) mainstream one. Now, Afterlife gets the best of both worlds: you can take it as a weird comedy flick, but you can dig deeper and it leaves you a lot to chew on. Zomborácz Virág follows the "Give the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and give God what belongs to God." rule. She gives it both: art and entertainment. This is a kind of black comedy where you laugh, but it leaves a bitter taste. It reminds me Anders Thomas Jensen's Adam's Apples, but with an unmistakable Hungarian/eastern European taste. The actors are all great (I could list the whole cast), the casting was really good and the cinematography is excellent: you see great camera work and beautiful images. Everyday places made beautiful through artistic work, eg. in the beginning of the movie when Mózes (Kristóf Márton) sits in his "cell" or at the end on the boat. I won't go into details about the plot, because it's best is if you go watch this movie unprepared - don't read too much about it. In my opinion this is one of the movies of 2014, that's definitely worth seeing.

13 Assassins (2010)
5/10
Samurai Fanservice
19 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Some of the reviewers compare this movie to the Seven Samurai of Kurosawa, but I don't know what movie they were watching. Yeah, like comparing Apocalypse Now to Kickboxer 4. Kurosawa's masterwork had a plot in this universe, a continuous plot that had logical elements built on top of each other. The 13 Assassin is a lot less convincing movie with serious logical glitches and holes. Is it a part of some post- postmodern reading that I didn't get? What is the point of someone dead being revived just add some stupid sentences into his mouth? The Lazarus coming back had his throat cut some 20 minutes earlier... This movie had everything subjugated (logic, reality) so that it could show scenes the director held important. The ending scene, the flowing blood from the rooftop out of nothing, not killing the prince because he has to be left last so we can have the "great revenge scene", all this is a part of a great fan-service. I'm still waiting for the review that explains all this and maybe I'll see the movie with a different eye, but sadly most of our reviewers rejoice the gore and the action, saying this is a masterpiece and caring not about plot continuity or logic.

Flat camp anime
11 May 2014
This anime was a complete letdown. Weak story, no characters. The characters are camp. Like the whole movie was a parody or spoof. If it is, I'm sorry I've misunderstood... I heard from VHD so much and I thought that I'll have fun watching it, but the truth is, it was a waste of time. Whoever gives a score above 5 for it remains a mystery for me. Kids, maybe? The fight scenes of "D" are pointless, he swings the sword and everybody dies, there's no logic between the scenes. The plot is predictable, you know what happens next from the 1st minute on. I'm writing still this review because I have to wright 10 lines, but the truth is there's nothing to write about here. I like (some) anime because it makes me think about things like "what it is to be human", "what an artificial life would be" and many other things, but in this case I finished empty headed.
