Beverly Hills Family Robinson (1997)
Not enough Sarah Michelle Gellar to make it work
" Beverly Hills Family Robinson " is a dull, uneventful film that just did`nt work at all
The direction was patchy, the script was awful and some of the acting bad ( both Dyan Cannon and Martin Mull were mr and missus boring ) but worst of all there was simply not enough Sarah Michelle Gellar to make it even passable.
In short not one of the greatest movies ever to come from Disney !!!!
Rating $$ out of $$$$$ ( those marks are for Sarah and nothing else )
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
The greatest television of all time.....and that`s the truth
What can be said about " BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER " that has`nt been already said? well in my humble view it is the greatest tv series ever made!!!!
It was well written, directed and it had one of the best casts ever assembled but best of all it had Sarah Michelle Gellar showing those other so called " kick ass babes " like Alias or Dark Angel how it`s done week after week after week.
In short this was and always will be the ultimate tv show.....and it will never be forgotten.
Scooby-Doo (2002)
Flawed but fun!
Stephen Pearces review of Scooby Doo
" Scooby Doo " is one of the greatest cartoon shows of all time but after " The Flintstones " and it`s sequel " The Flinstones in viva Rock Vagas" were both flops the pressure to turn possibly Hanna-Barberas most famous cartoon creation was high.....could they do it?-the answer was yes and no.
The problems with the film almost outweigh its plus points.Raja Gosnell, who began his career as editor on the first two " HOME ALONE " movies before moving on to films such as "NEVER BEEN KISSED" with Drew Barrymore and " BIG MOMMAS HOUSE " with Martin Lawrence handles the directing duties with the all the power and grace of someone handling a sledgehammer while James Gunns script and the special effects sadly leave a lot to be desired( the sfx Scooby Doo is sometimes out of sync with the rest of the film) but worst of all is some of the acting is almost non-existant( Freddie Prinze Jnr being the main villian ) but,as i have said, there are some good points.
Matthew Liliards Shaggy is absolutely spot-on while Rowan"Bean" Atkinson hams it up with relish and gusto as the villian but Sarah Michelle Gellar steals everyones thunder by making Daphine Blake a tough and sassy character.
So to sum up " Scooby Doo " is not the greatest film but it is a huge ammount of fun and at least it beats watching " The Flintstones " any day.
Stephens rating - $$$ out of $$$$$
She's All That (1999)
Predictable but fun
" She`s all that " is not original but it`s a lot of fun.
Freddie Prinze Jnr provides his best ever screen performance in the lead role while Rachel Leigh Cook is excellent as the girl he falls for and there is good from the likes of Matthew Liliard,Paul Walker,Kierian "Igby"Culkin and Kevin "Usual Suspects" Pollak.
In all a good film......oh yeah and that Sarah Michelle Gellar school canteen cameo is absoluely priceless.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Not original but a whole lotta of fun
" I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER " may not be very original(it`s "HALLOWEEN" meets "FRIDAY THE 13TH" with just a touch of "HE KNOWS YOU`RE ALONE") but it is great fun because writer Kevin"SCREAM"Williamson,Director Jim Gillispie and the cast make it work.
Both Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jnr(in one of his more decent acting perfomances)are fine but Jennifer Love Hewitt and the gorgeous Sarah Michelle Gellar shine in their respective roles and there`s more than a fair ammount to be had.
In short not a bad film at all.
Harvard Man (2001)
Great cast...not great film.
I have seen " HARVARD MAN " for the first time on dvd and i think it is a notable failure with a great cast.
James Toback is a good director but this is not one of his best films simply it is poorly written and directed and it gives the cast nothing to do whatsoever.
Adam Greiner is ok if a little wooden but he gets completely out acted by the utterly gorgeous and totally wonderfull Sarah Michelle Gellar as the nasty and calculated Cindy.
The rest of the cast...Rebecca Gayheart,Ray Allen and, good to see him in a movie after all these years,Eric Stoltz are excellent but as i have said they are not given much to do.
So in short...notable failure that could have been good.
Summer Catch (2001)
The worst Baseball film ever?
I have just seen "SUMMER CATCH" on video(it was never released in cinemas here) and i think it is the worst baseball movie i have ever seen. Freddie Prinze jnr once again delivers a dreadful performance in the leading role and Jessica Biel is just horrid as the love interest.
The saddest thing about this film though is the number of great people who have ruined their reputations by starring in this rubbish-Brian Dennehy,Fred Ward,Marc "Buffy" Blucas and worst of all Brittany Murphy all have roles in this film and all of them should hang their heads in shame.
The only decent thing about this film is Matthew Lillard but even he cant save this film this time.
So is short this film is a pile of crap and to be quite honest i suggest you avoid this like the plague...in the meantime i am off to watch "field of dreams"
Simply Irresistible (1999)
Simply Irresistible-not bad but not great!
I think "SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE" is a much underated film that deserved than what it got.
The best thing about was Sarah Michelle Gellar because she was gorgeous and utterly watchable but the less said about Sean Patrick Flanney the better...I think he should stick to being Indiana Jones jnr.
In short...not too bad.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
One of the greatest movies ever!
> A REVIEW BY STEPHEN PEARCE
This modern revamp of "DANGEROUS LIASIONS" may not be original but it is a truly great film.
The story goes something like this.....Sebastian(RYAN PHILLIPPE)and Kathryn(SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR-HUBBA HUBBA) are two of Manhattans richest young people. This live in a posh apartment and use their money to get what they want and use sex as a means to an end.But one day things start to go wrong for both of them when Kathryn makes Sebastian an offer he cant refuse. If he can woo the virginal Annette Hargrove(RESSE WITHERSPOON) he can do with her what he likes..if he fails he must give her his jaguar sports car.But neither of them account for the fact that Sebastian has fallen for Annette and soon their little wager becomes a true battle for power.
The reason why "CRUEL INTENTIONS" is a great film lies in the casting.Ryan Phillippe may not be John Malkovich but he is excellent as Sebastian while Resse Witherspoon adds a touch of class to the role of Annette Hargrove but both are eclipsed by Sarah Michelle Gellar who is sexy and utterly dangerous as Kathryn.
So all in all "CRUEL INTENTIONS" is a great film that should be watched and if you dont think it is there is always Sarah Michelle Gellar to watch and enjoy!
