Knives Out (2019)
Even better on 2nd watch!
I had the privilege to see Knives Out in theaters when it first opened, and settled down for a rewatch on Prime Video over the weekend. The storyline, characters, and acting are all top-notch, but I have to say that because I was more familiar with the plot this time, during the second viewing time I was mesmerized by the set design and costumes. The attention to detail is superb and adds so much nuance to the storyline. And you just can't beat that last shot, a full 360 from the opening scene. Must watch!
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
A pleasure to watch! Rami Malek steals the show as Freddie Mercury, maybe the best rock frontman of all time
Thoroughly enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody! Don't believe the critical reviews. Yes, they had to take some liberties to fit in such a long and complex story into 2 hours. It's not a documentary! Rami Malek's performance is amazing - he captures both the flamboyant and quiet parts of Mercury's persona so accurately it's uncanny. The movie spends a lot of time developing Mercury's relationship with Mary Austin (who he declared the love of his life) and the rockier relationship with Paul Prenter. I wished Jim Hutton had received as much screen time - Jim was with Mercury through his final years and feels a bit rushed into the story at the end. The musical performances are stellar: from the earliest gigs through the arena shows chronicling the greatest hits, and culminating in the LiveAid show, which is known as one of the best live rock performances of all time. And though Mercury is obviously the star, the movie does a reasonable job exploring the dynamics between the band members as well as their songwriting collaborations and process. A must-see rock biopic!
The Sinner: Part I (2017)
Promising show - great first episode
I watched this after a recommendation from a friend and was not disappointed. Great acting by both Jessica Biel and Christopher Abbott, and I was roped into the mystery immediately. Looking forward to binging full series.
The X Files: The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat (2018)
Back to the X-Files I love!
The latest season has been hit and miss (the first episode was a disaster) but this one finally hit. Scully and Mulder had great chemistry and brought back the humorous banter that makes the X-Files great.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
Stunning performance by Franco
I wasn't familiar with the story of The Room until reading about The Disaster Artist but still thoroughly enjoyed it. James Franco's performance as the bizarre enigmatic Tommy Wiseau is stunning. Highly recommend.
