I loved it
1 August 2004
(Keep in mind I am a HUGE M.KNight fan...)

I really think his work is brilliant. This film really reminds me of something that a 15 year old film kid would make with his friends if he was given a large budget and good actors. I say this as a very big compliment- it's a film that makes your heart race with the addition of some cheesy parts that scare you quickly and then make you laugh at yourself for being so scared. This combo makes going to the film extremely fun.

The best part about this movie is not even what goes on during the film. It's what people are saying afterward. Everyone asks "what is it about?" and you can't say anything because it will give it all away. You can barely answer ANY questions about it because every question leads to comething else. People who have seen it feel as though they know and have seen something no one else has and it just makes you HAVE to go see it.

One element that makes his work so different is that he barely uses music. When most movies use music over every dialogue, this film uses silence to convey seriousness and to give an eerie and subtle hint of something terrible brewing.

I might be in the minority here but this film was awesome in so many ways. The actors in this film were absolutely fabulous and his character development is really great. There is something special and noticible about every one of his characters. The story might have been simple is something the audience will think aobut much longer after the final credits. I kept thinking about the concept of this movie and wondering "what if...." (I can't say anything more)

because you don't have to think
12 July 2004
Relax everyone..did anyone expect an Academy Award winner?

I think one of the bloopers at the end of the film sums it up:

Will Farrell, in a classic and silly improv, messes up and simply says, "This is so ridiculous." That sums it up for me. You don't have to think..just watch, shake your head and laugh.

There are some parts that you should be laughing at and don't -and some parts that aren't that funny but make you laugh. I have to say that the character "Brick" is hilarious and had some of the best lines.

The fight scene is by far the best and makes you realize how utterly silly this movie really is.

SNACK ATTACK FOR ANCHORMAN: umm...M&Ms and some twizzlers.

the darker, the better
28 June 2004
NOTE: I did NOT see the 1975 version, which I've heard is much better.

I took three 13 year olds to see this and had no expectations when entering the theatre. In fact, I didn't know what the movie was about except that it had Matt Broderick and Chris Walken and that always equals a good time. I am a huge fan of dark comedies and would label this a soft-dark comedy (a light comedy? ha) that is easy to watch and has an organized feel. There is a creepy and eerie edge throughout the film and I often wondered whether I should be laughing or should if I should be feeling sorry for the characters. (I love that feeling, I always feel like the jerk in the theatre)(And yes, I usually laugh instead) Overall, I kinda liked it and I thought there was something to it..I just don't know what. I will say it could have been a lot darker and I plan on checking out the other version.

SNACK ATTACK FOR THIS FILM: freshly baked cupcakes and an apple. At least that's what I felt like eating during this one. (check out my other reviews for snack attack suggestions)

Chaos and disorder
20 June 2004
The first half of this film was chaotic and disorganized and left me confused and unfilfilled. Nearly every fight scene included a strobe light effect that was redundant rather than artsy and seemed like a waste of film. Everyone who went with me agreed the second half semi-saved the film and held the audience's attention better but couldn't compensate for the fact that Vin Diesel's acting is terrible and his constant one-liners are predictable and annoying after ten seconds. Overall, I'd say to go with some friends, pretend you're playing mystery science theatre and bring lots of fun dip to amuse yourself...at least that's what I did.
