Siu Lam juk kau (2001)
Very entertaining!
If you like martial arts movies then you will enjoy this spoof on kung-fu ( as applied to soccer lol). There's lots of bumbling and bad jokes along the way, but the master channels the power and good triumphs over evil in the end.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Utterly disappointing
I loved the first Dr Strange movie and was looking forward to this, but unfortunately it is a complete mess. The first movie had a coherent story with smart dialog and tastefully implemented special effects. This one is a train wreck of confusion drowning in CGI, populated by characters I couldn't make myself care about. Even the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch could not make Dr Strange believable. There is something terribly wrong here, but it's not in the mysterious multi-verse. It's in the movie making biz that can't tell the difference between a good and bad movie anymore.
Next Stop, Christmas (2021)
Enchanting Holiday RomCom
Hallmark movies often leave me groaning, but this is the rare one that really works. Lyndsy Fonseca, as Angie, carries the movie with her natural style, and the supporting cast are also very good. I especially liked seeing Christopher Llyod and Lea Thompson reprising their Back To The Future characters. The story does a clever job of moving Angie back and forth in time until she learns some life lessons and untangles the past. The movie comes to the expected heartwarming conclusion, but I wasn't in a hurry for it to end. I really hope that the producers can distill the secret sauce and make more movies like this with unforced dialogue and natural, believable characters. Congrats all around.
Christmas Town (2019)
Heart warming
This Hallmark movie skips over so many practical details that it can't be taken literally. It's a Christmas fantasy about love and family, and you just have to ignore the inconsistencies to enjoy it. As usual the sets are beautiful like Hallmark Christmas cards and the characters are likeable and harmless. Even the boyfriend who gets dropped is a nice guy ( usually they're jerks). Hang in there for the heartwarming conclusion. Cookies and Coco for everyone!
The Lost Valentine (2011)
Poignant and moving
I don't expect much from Hallmark so I was pleasantly surprised by this touching and well acted film. Unlike the usual Boy meets girl/loses girl/marries girl formula, this is about the sacrifices that people made during WWII and in particular the families of men who were declared MIA/KIA. The flashbacks to the 1940s are accurate RE clothing, hairstyles, cars, etc, and are all set to the music of the era. Even today, in 2022, the remains of soldiers who fought in WWII are being repatriated so the topic remains relevant. Betty White is perfect as the main character, and the supporting cast, eg Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Sean Faris, are also likeable and believable. The movie is well paced and brings us to the best conclusion possible under the circumstances. I'm glad I watched it.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Complex & worth the effort
Like the first Matrix movie this reboot is complex. I had to watch it three times to fully appreciate everything going on. It's brilliant how the movie manages to tie in the elements of the earlier films while advancing the story. It also takes into account that the actors are older now too and can't be as athletic. I can see that this movie couldn't be all things to all Matrix fans - as is its almost two and a half hours long. Unfortunately it didn't do as well at the box office as hoped so we probably won't see another Matrix movie for a long time if ever.
ER: The Crossing (2001)
An ER moment of greatness!
Unlike most ER episodes The Crossing starts by showing us part of the final scene. I didn't realize until the end that everything was meant to serve that final interaction between Luka and Bishop. Luka struggled to save people in the train wreck. The Bishop waited until Luka was finally ready to share his terrible loss and guilt. Luka laid down his burden and the Bishop picked it up. They needed each other, and they were free. It really shook me. TV rarely rises to this level.
Dance with Me (1998)
One of the best dance movies!
Dance With Me is excellent because both Chayanne and Venessa Williams are a "triple threat", i.e. they can dance, act and sing too, which is rare these days. Dance movies are almost always weak in either acting or dancing, and the stories are often just filler to pass time and loosely connect the dance scenes. Not so with DWM, where the chemistry of the characters is so strong it makes the story believable even though it is predictable. The production values are also very high - footage of a real professional ballroom dancing competition is seamlessly integrated, and the film is infused with great Latin music from beginning to end. And Venessa and Chayanne DO sing one of the songs in the soundtrack, all of which sounds terrific in 5.1 surround on the DVD. If you like dance films you owe it to yourself to see DWM.
