The Void (2016)
'A' Void at all costs
Prepare yourself for a harrowing journey into cinematic disappointment with 'The Void'. After witnessing this cosmic horror, one is left with a chilling sense of dread-not from the unknown horrors depicted, but from the perplexing mystery of how this film garnered any praise at all. The mystery surrounding its approval raises questions about whether the directors themselves made a pact with an ancient-alien god to get the green light. The cult-like fanbase it attracts only adds to this puzzlement.
This film attempts to pay homage to classic Lovecraftian tropes, but instead, it's like a grotesque Frankenstein's monster stitched together from leftover horror clichés. From cults to mad scientists, mutant monsters to cosmic beings, the film throws everything at the wall, but fails to build any real suspense or dread. Admittedly, 'The Void' has its moments of terror, but be warned: the abundance of flashing lights could leave you feeling more disoriented than a bat in daylight. If you have epilepsy, consider watching something less likely to induce a medical emergency.
The movie explores cosmic horror, attempting to evoke the fear of the unknown, but it ends up overdoing it. Its lack of explanation or resolution renders it a muddled mess devoid of depth or coherence. In the end we know so little about the events of the move. In this case, is it truly Lovecraftian, or simply lazy filmmaking?
Approach this film with caution, for it may ensnare you in a cult-like devotion to expunge its memory from your mind.
And so, 'A' Void is the feeling that lingers long after the credits roll-a void of satisfaction, coherence, and purpose.
