Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would (2022)
I Wish You Wouldn't, Trevor
It's the 2020s. The foreign accent impressions is getting really tired by now. So are the "west is trash and everything else are awesome" jokes. I'm East Asian and am taking no offence, it's just no longer funny when it's recycled 10000 times.
Then there are jokes based on alternative facts. His facts. Falsehoods like 'Africa handled Covid better than the West' (they didn't, cases and deaths are found to be highly underreported). It's as cringe-worthy as some right wing comedians basing their jokes on falsehoods and their redneck audiences cheering it.
Even his Donald Trump and Boris Johnson jokes are funnier during the Daily Show episodes. Overall, this special felt preachy, old and tired. No where close to the better comedians of his generation like Mark Normand, Joe List and Sam Morrill.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Between the knock-off Susan Sarandon and insanely boring storyline
Did Zack Snyder really directed this? Easily the worst zombie movie in recent memory. Boring with characters that you just can't get behind. Starts really slow and ends even slower.
Wanda Sykes: Not Normal (2019)
I've never waited so eagerly for a sequel..
Now i would normally give this a solid 9 but damn.. 7.2 is just wayyy too underrating this. Literally LOL'ed watching this on my computer. As the header says, I'm still waiting for a second Netflix special from Wanda because this is just so awesome.. Easily one of the funniest on Netflix close at the top with Burr, Chappelle and Louis CK..
The Tinder Swindler (2022)
One thing that always perplexes me..
Documentaries will start off the interview with the victim and he/she describes the timeline of the event with the same mood that they were in.
In this case, the first victim was cheated hundred of thousands, put into living hell of worries and yet can still reflect the first date she had with the swindler with sweet fondness and an almost blissful smile like it was a happy ending. How is that a natural behaviour of someone who had been clearly traumatized?
Don't get me wrong. I know the victims are real. But what do these documentaries tell these people.. imagine the past as if you were there and then smile for the camera? Not only was she cheated of her money, but her money is used to buy stuff for the other women who the swindler is cheating with. Wouldn't every thought of him be one of disgust?
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
Something about this movie that just made me watch it thrice
Maybe it's the 90's nostalgia, maybe it's the music, maybe it's the likeable characters. Whatever it is, overall it's a heart-warming romcom that should not be missed by any fan of the genre.
The F**k-It List (2020)
How is a teenage comedy so boring and misguided at the same time?
Easily one of the worst in recent memory. Some comedies are slapstick dumb fun. Some like Love, Simon is slightly boring but have a positive message. This has neither. A kid who wants to grow up in his own terms and doing anything but that.
The irony is the negative effects of the viral social media moment in the movie is exactly what will play out in real-life with this movie. There are many high-school kids these days who are just that dumb - and quite a few may actually just squander their future after watching this.
2/10
The Social Dilemma (2020)
Nothing you can't get from reading regular news, but some recommendations are idiotic
Issues brought up are not surprising and nothing new. Anybody reading the news knows this for a fact. If your mind is blown by this, you're probably either not reading enough or is exactly one of the subjects of this documentary - spending too much time with garbage content and getting similar garbage thrown back at you by social media over and over again.
The problem with this show is the dumb suggestions/solutions given by some 'experts' in the show. One of them suggested not clicking on YouTube's suggested videos which so mightily dumb because who hasn't benefited from discovering new high quality content of interest with YouTube? If you keep getting trash suggestions, maybe you are the problem, not YouTube.
And that goes with social media. It is as good as the society using it. If society wants to believe fake news, then fake news will be the prevailing content. If they love the Kardashians, then you get freaking Kardashians. But if society like science, facts and discovery of truth, then social media will accelerate that.
In a world without social media, a fake news believer won't buy newspaper, the Kardashian lover won't buy a Michio Kaku book. This documentary does not address the root of the issues. The few good suggestions are uninstalling the apps or turn off notifications which if you read enough, not new.
The Girl Next Door (2004)
Likable characters, nice soundtrack, insanely gorgeous Elisha Cuthbert
This movie deserves a little more attention than it got. Premise was interesting. Most of all, the characters are very well played by the cast. Timothy Olyphant as Kelly was very likeable. So is Remar's Hugo Posh. Then there's Elisha Cuthbert's Danielle. Marilyn Monroe level of hot. Probably made my 8/10 rating of the movie less objective but whatever..
Overall the movie is a fun watch. And yes, great lovely soundtrack.
Heart and Souls (1993)
They don't make movies like this anymore
A heart-warming movie with an interesting premise, likable characters and RDJ during his rom-com years. Very little to not like about this film. A must watch for romcom fans.
OK it is not a 10, maybe 7.5. I'm just trying to skew the score higher because this is underrated at 7.
Busanhaeng (2016)
The movie is realistically a 5.5
As a Korean or Asian zombie movie, I get it that it is a rare production done relative well. But in a larger scheme of things and comparing with all the zombie movies that have been done to death especially in Hollywood, this movie is AVERAGE. The zombies are unoriginal and so similar to World War Z, this might as well be a called World War Z: The Busan Contagion.
That Korean cinema touch of inserting emo moments to every genre is just so cliche, worn out and in this case applied without much thoughts. Going through the day chased by flesh-eating zombies, your body is so flooded with stress and adrenaline, tears of sadness are the last thing that will flow out from you. And let's not get into the many many unrealistic and even unintentionally comical scenes.
Movies above 7 in IMDB is usually worth a watch. This is not one of them. Those who rated this 10, please do yourselves a favour and watch more movies outside of Asia.
Bill Nye: Science Guy (2017)
Disturbing
Revealing the human behind the icon. Critical of his weaknesses and flaws despite him actually alive and being part of the show. That is respectable. True to science, facts above all else.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Lovely soundtrack, lovely cast
It's a nice feel-good movie with the queen of romcom Rachel McAdams. Love the fact that they used many tracks from Sigur Ros, a band from Iceland and so aptly in the movie.
The Invention of Lying (2009)
The cameos..
Just love the cameos popping out when you least expect.
IO (2019)
Netflix needs to stop producing post-apocalyptic sci-fi
Annihilation, Extinction, Cloverfield Paradox, How it Ends, Birdbox and now this. Just gets progressively worse. Cliche ridden, lazy story telling and in the case of IO, just plain boring.
Forrest Gump (1994)
23 years and 800 hundred movies later, I still find this to be the best movie of all time
I'm not a movie critic who really understands the artsy part of movie-making.
For me, a great movie is one that stands the test of time, makes you laugh and cry at the same time, changes your perspective for the better and keeps you entertained every moment from title sequence to closing credits. Forrest Gump is that and more.
The cast is perfect. Tom Hanks is brilliant beyond words, bringing to life a character that is so likable, memorable and even relatable. And finally, the soundtrack is amazing.
