Huan Cheng: Revenge of the Princess 3 (2016)
Powerfully Dark & Hopeful
One of the darkest yet most powerful episodes of the series, this one should not be watched before going to bed. As consequences unfold the fate of the main characters is never more unsure and we are left wondering what possible future turns the series could take. If you have been wondering how things would play out based on the past lies of certain characters you will find out here.
Dogville (2003)
One of most thought-provoking films in years
I saw this film in Paris, when it came out, near the end of my 9-month stay there. At first I was curious, but not too enthused about what was going on. But as the film progressed I became more and more interested and involved in it's story and characters. But I have to say, that it was the ending and the lessons as a whole that really blew me away.
Having said that, don't let anyone tell you anything about the film, especially the ending. It will most likely ruin it for you.
I think this film does a lot more than say human nature is one way or the other, it shows us a plausible situation and then asks us what we would do in that situation, and why. I think it teaches many lessons, especially since one may start out in the beginning agreeing with certain elements, and by the end be on the opposite side.
If you want a movie that will make you think and question some of your very basic moral beliefs, this one is for you.
Mies vailla menneisyyttä (2002)
Beautiful, rich, funny
This film takes place in the semi-urban wastelands of Helsinki, where a stranger finds himself with no memory because of a head injury. Slowly he starts to build a new life with relatively little, including the exotic Finnish beauty working at the local Salvation Army. The film goes by kind of slow but one doesn't mind because of the beautifully rich and often funny mood that goes with it. The music was also quite good, bringing to mind images of a poor but thriving people living heartily in their native land. Overall, my favorite elements were the music, the strangely poor but rich and sad landscapes and the equally rich and sad, and comic, characters.
Spider (2002)
Terrible, horrible, boring...
One would think that with the lineup it boasts that this would probably turn out to be a decent movie; unfortunately this is not the case. The film is unrelentingly slow and boring, there is hardly any action or events that could be said to excite or thrill - with one or two notable exceptions. The tone is dark and depressing, the only thing that reminded me of a typical Cronenberg film at all. The mood stays fairly constant and in this there is no real feeling of change or advancement; certainly no feeling of climax. The plot is solid however but even at the end one might wonder what this film was trying to say, why it was made; I certainly did. I liked John Neville's small performance though.
Always a Bridesmaid (2000)
Interesting, yet drawn out
'Always a Bridesmaid' is the story of Nina Davenport's quest for marriage and the frustrations and disappointments she encounters on the was, as told and filmed by Nina Davenport. At first it looks as if it might be dry and boring, but the narrator's voice and style of story telling quickly catches one's interest. You realize this is a true story and you wonder what is going to happen. What kind of person tells her own tale about failed love and unsuccessful relationships, and on video, interviewing all of her friend's about what they think of her and her attitudes towards relationships? Her neurosis pulls you in.
Most of the movie stays pretty interesting, though it begins to drag near the end and you want to tell Nina to stop being dumb and open her eyes. But all in all its an interesting and enjoyable movie.
