Never Have I Ever (2020)
A lighthearted story of a teenager girl
Although my background is not Indian so I cannot comment on the cultural aspect of the show, I still enjoyed watching this show regardless. The beginning of the show was a bit slow and I think the wheelchair/paralysis aspect of the story was unnecessary, but other than that, the story was interesting. I found myself relating to many of the "awkward" actions undertaken by Devi but that just made me want to watch the show more. I had a good laugh in many parts of the show as well. The friendship between the three girls was beautifully portrayed as well. Would love to see a second season that would perhaps include a love triangle between Devi, Paxton, and Ben. The show ended on too much of a cliffhanger for a second season to not happen.
Si shi qing chun (2018)
A heartwarming movie:)
This movie is best enjoyed watching it in the original language, Japanese. The animation was so beautiful and vibrant and detailed, loved every aspect of it. I was getting hungry just by watching the man eat rice noodles in the first story, each ingredient in the dish was animated with such precise detail. I liked how the first two stories incorporated the importance of food in the two characters' lives, though I think that there should have been a more defined/prominent connection to food in the third story, Shanghai Love. Outro of the movie was great too, a song by one of my favorite Japanese artists! The end credits was a good way to wrap up the show.
Outer Banks (2020)
Great show to watch in quarantine!
I was a bit skeptical about watching this show because it was just recently released and there were not many ratings/reviews out yet. However, I am so glad I decided to watch this show til the end, because every single episode was riveting and the suspense only got greater and better as the story progressed. I love how the evolution of friendship between the Pogues was portrayed and how each character had his/her own, unique personality that all made the plot richer as they experienced many successes and failures. The soundtrack was great, the scenes were filmed beautifully, and each actor did a phenomenal job of telling the story. I loved that during many times when I was watching this show, my heart started racing so fast because the scene was just so suspenseful and exhilarating. haven't watched a show like this in ages. The twists and turns were unexpected and added to the richness of the story as a whole. I liked that the storyline is one representation of the role that politics has a role in crime; though John B was 100% innocent for the crimes that he was being accused of, he rightfully believed that it would be a waste to try and convince law enforcement of the whole truth because his word would never be taken seriously over an affluent man like Ward's. These aspects all contributed to the telling of an elaborate, complex, suspenseful story. Wouldn't mind a second season!
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
Pales a bit in comparison to Volume 1...
Yes, each fight scene was impressive, but I felt like something in the bigger picture was missing from this film. It's pretty obvious from the title what happens in the end, so I was looking to get something more out of this film. The final bit of the film where Beatrix reunites with her estranged daughter at last and settles odds and ends with Bill wasn't exactly bad, I guess, but it was missing some spice. Plus, I was a bit confused during that scene when Beatrix is in pigtails and is sitting in a classroom, whereupon her name gets called by the teacher? To this day, I still don't understand what that scene was about. Other than that, the rest of the movie was pretty solid, definitely less blood than in Volume 1, and I liked how Elle Driver met her end, too. That came around full circle.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Very bloody...
Boy, was there a ton of blood shed in this movie! The movie started out in a really abrupt way but it wasn't so confusing that I couldn't figure out what was going on; from then on, the action progressed pretty rapidly, and never lagged at any point. Each of Beatrix's interactions with her former partners-in-crime of the Deadly Viper Association was unique and interesting to watch. Although Beatrix's physical capabilities were amazing throughout the movie, they were especially impressive when she knocked each and every member of the Crazy 88's gang with her newly acquired Hanzou sword. That must have taken a lot of training and time to perfect! During that scene, though brief, Gogo's movements were brutal and impressive as well, and she did indeed pull off the vengeful schoolgirl look very well. Finally, I liked how Bill had an aura of mystery surrounding him, which added to the thrill and excitement of this movie.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Clever use of sound (or lack thereof).
The trailer for this movie did not disappoint! The manipulation of sound was a unique plot element that fit really well with the story. Focusing on one specific family and telling the story from their point of view was pretty good plotwise, but the movie definitely could have used a bit more action, such as incorporating more interactions with other people or forcing the family to move to another location for safety purposes. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski did an exceptional job of visibly portraying their fear of the monsters, as well as the child actors. It still amazes me that Evelyn was able to give birth so quietly in that situation; Blunt acted out that scene perfectly and with the right amount of emotion. Also, is it just me or did the monsters in this movie look oddly similar to the demagorgons from Stranger Things??
Us (2019)
An unique plotline.
I was pretty surprised when I read some of the reviews on here, because some people seemed to really dislike this movie, and though I didn't think that it was that bad, I have to say that I was a bit confused after watching this movie. I had to read several articles; interpretations in order to understand some of the messages that this movie was trying to portray, and the logic behind the twist/ending. I'm not exactly sure if a good movie is supposed to convey its meaning in a pretty obvious way, or if I'm just clueless, but after having watched this movie, all I thought was, "That's it?" The ending came and went pretty abruptly, and I couldn't help but feel that I was missing something. Nonetheless, the actors in this movie, especially Nyong'o, did a spectacular job of portraying two very different characters. All in all, the concept in this movie was interesting, but it could have been executed in a way that caused a little less confusion.
Selena (1997)
A respectful tribute to Selena's legacy.
Though I wasn't familiar at all with Selena's music prior to watching this movie, after listening to the songs Lopez sang throughout the movie, I felt like I'd known these movies for a long time. The whole storyline in the movie seemed to be pretty authentic, and I was glued to the screen every second while watching it. I especially loved how realistically Selena was portrayed, as a talented girl who was reaching for her dreams every minute she was alive, surrounded by her loving family and their unwavering support. Selena looked absolutely gorgeous no matter what she was wearing, just a plain t-shirt or one of her elegant concert outfits. The tragic end to Selena's brilliant life was portrayed very well too, and did a good job of making the audience question, if not direct their anger, at Yolanda Saldivar for what she did, taking away the bright future from such a talented, energetic, loving woman like Selena. The entire cast fulfilled their roles perfectly, and Lopez's voice was absolutely beautiful. For people looking to understand what really happened in Selena's lifetime, this movie is a must-see.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Seemingly endless supply of adventure!
An oldie but a classic nonetheless! The score went perfectly well with the intense action that was going on for most of the movie, and the other sound effects were phenomenal as well, a typical Steven Spielberg feat. All of the actors played their part well, specifically the scene with the high speed chase through the desert where the Nazis were shook off the truck one by one by Jones' doing.
Always Be My Maybe (2019)
A quirky, lighthearted rom-com!
This wasn't one of those cheesy, high school rom-coms that we're all pretty tired of by now, but a solid, meaningful rom-com that hits all the right feels at the right times. The fact that the cast is centered on an Asian American couple is different compared to other cliched rom-coms, but it was still executed remarkably well and authentically as a crucial element of the story. There were an abundance of hilarious scenes, especially the ones where Keanu Reeves made an appearance, but there were also those serious scenes that made you ask yourself what exactly you're doing with your own life. Plus, the score for this movie was pretty great, including Hello Peril's songs, and also, all of the food that made an appearance in this movie looked absolutely delicious!
Stand and Deliver (1988)
An eye-opening storyline.
Having watched this movie in my AP Spanish class, I liked how the storyline was pretty accurate (it seems) compared to what actually happened in real life, giving me an eye-opening insight into the obstacles that certain cultural communities faced back in the late 1980s and how they overcame the toughest odds. Also, on numerous occasions, I found myself sympathizing and connecting to many of the characters who were teenagers going through some of the same tough stuff just like I hd experienced.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
Such a cute movie!
Ignoring skeptical comments from my peers, I am so glad that I went and saw this movie, because not only did it have a pretty solid plot point, the various Pokemon characters that made an appearance in this movie were so adorable, ESPECIALLY Pikachu. Also, Ryan Reynold's vocal impression of Pikachu was top notch and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Justice Smith was an OK actor, and Kathryn Newton a bit better. I thought that the plot was pretty similar to Captain Marvel, the whole the-supposedly-good-guy-actually-turns-out-to-be-the-really-bad-villan type, which wasn't all terrible. Finally, kudos to this movie for convincing me to get Pokémon Go on my phone and collect these cute Pokémons for myself.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Such a sweet story!
Many aspects of this movie were very vibrant, including the gorgeous scenery shots of Singapore, as well as the various characters' extravagant fashions, allowing me to see new details I hadn't noticed before every time I watched it; everything in the movie just looked so lovely! Although I started tearing up and was a bit (ahem, VERY) disappointed when Rachel made the brave decision to leave Nick behind with his family in Singapore, I was immediately satisfied when Nick reproposed to Rachel, this time with the gorgeous emerald ring that his mother had been wearing. I think that there are definitely an abundance of plot points that can be followed up with in the sequel, such as how Eleanor came to approve of Rachel, how Rachel adjusts to the married life with Nick, and possibly even the creation of a bigger family between Rachel and Nick, so I am excited to see how the next movie will play out.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Great first Marvel movie!
Considering that this was the first Marvel movie I'd ever watched, I didn't need any prior knowledge to be able to fully understand the plot in this movie, which was really nice. The visual effects were absolutely amazing and all of the cast did a tremendous job portraying their roles! Would definitely recommend to people who've never seen any Marvel movies.
