Tootsie (1982)
Tootsie Wootsie
1 October 2000
Dustin Hoffman plays two roles; he plays Michael Dorsey an unemployed actor with a reputation for being difficult and Dorothy Michaels in both roles but unforgettable a as the woman he disguises himself as to land a role in a soap opera. Hoffman is terrific s Dorothy. The film has a terrific script great direction and good acting. With all of that and the hilarious story, this falls as one of the greatest movies to come out of the eighties.

Michael Dorsey is struggling with is acting career. He seems to know a lot about acting and the way it's supposed to be done, in a realistic sense anyway. While the movies credits are being shown in the beginning, there is a terrific montage of Michael talking to people about acting and trying to land roles as an actor. It's kind of ironic because he is giving what looks to be his students advice and telling how things should be done but he can't even get a role himself. Some good direction comes in, in the montage when Michael is trying out for parts. One of my favorite parts in the montage is when he is dressed up a little older and he is up on this stage and the director yells out, `stop', from the darkness of the audience seats and says something like no, no you're no good we need someone who looks a little older. In the next scene Michael is dressed as a kid a new director says no, no we need someone who looks younger. This is when he gets the truth that people just don't want him for any parts. Then we go back to him telling what looks to be his students about acting. He tells them that ninety five percent of actors are unemployed and that there is no reason for this. Then we got another shot of him being rejected and them a scene with him working at a restaurant, which is also ironic. Then we go to Michael and his roommate Jeff's (Bill Murray) apartment, where there is a surprise birthday for him. Michael is going around asking for girls' numbers and etc. He goes up to this one girl and asks if she is an actress, she says yes and then he goes on and on about how good she was. We then go to a scene where Jeff is talking to people about how he hates it when people come up to him and say `hey you were that guy in that movie, you were great'. So from that we can assume the director was probably trying to tell us something, it could mean many things, but I came to the conclusion that it probably was what the girl was thinking. So there is a lot of good scenes with good ides in them that I don't think were scripted, I think that were Pollack's directing.

Michael then takes his friend Julie, who is played by Jessica Lange, who won an Oscar for her role, to try out for a part in a soap opera. She just can't seem to be as good at the part as Michael can. She doesn't get the part. Michael is determined to become an actor and prove his agent wrong for saying that no wants to hire him. Well in a sense his agent was right, no one really wants to hire Michael, they want Dorothy. Dorothy is someone Michael makes up in order to get hired for the part in the soap opera. Dorothy gets hired for the part in the soap opera. Then Dorothy meets Sandy (Terri Garr) who is playing a nurse on the soap opera. They become attached and soon bond. Sandy wants Dorothy to meet her dad because he is lonely since his wife died. This of course becomes hilarious because Dorothy is really Michael. Meanwhile Michael is getting attached to Sandy, but can't express his feelings because he has to be Dorothy. There is a funny montage at Sandy's farmhouse where her dad and Dorothy are staying for the weekend. There is this sort of love music playing with shots of the dad falling for Dorothy and Dorothy falling for Sandy. But, that doesn't really make since because in the whole movie everyone is on tight schedule and all of the sudden they just go away for a couple of days, but whatever. I don't want to ruin anymore so I'll leave it at that.

Tootsie follows the same format as Some Like it Hot and Mrs. Doubtfire would follow. A man desperately wants some thing, he wants it so bad he will do any thing, even if it requires dressing as a woman. In Some Like it Hot the men are dressing as women to get to Florida. In Tootsie the man wants to be an actor and get enough money to produce his friends script. And in Mrs. Doubtfire a man wants his wife back so bad he dresses as a nanny and watches her kids. So they all basically follow the same format and really its a very successful format, all of those movies have mad a lot of money and have gotten very good reviews and that can all be thanked to Billy Wilder. I found some little interesting facts from Entertainment Weekly magazine. It said that the title actually came form Hoffman, whose mother `used to throw me up in the air and say, How' my tootsie wootsie?' And that Hoffman's four-pound silicone breasts cost one hundred and seventy five dollars each.

Overall the film was pretty good. I was expecting it to be pretty bad. I had watched the first ten minutes of it like a year ago and turned it off. I guess the reason I didn't like it then was because it was so acclaimed and that it really didn't look that good. But after seeing it I still don't completely agree with the critics and I have to say I definitely don't agree with it being on the American Film Institutes top one hundred movies of all time. But if you haven't seen it I would recommend watching it sometime.

Not a dull moment

Jean-Luc Godard gives a brilliant direction and Woody Allen only helps with superb writing capabilities! This short is absolutely worth watching. It may be hard to find this one but its well worth it. This is one of my favorite Jean-Luc Godard films and certainly the best short I have ever seen. I highly recommend this one to all fans of Godard and Allen.

Cop Land (1997)
6/10
Great cast for a poor film.
22 July 2000
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best casted film I have ever witnessed. Sylvester Stalone could not have been better as Freddy the town sheriff who takes a stand against corrupt cops squealing though his neighbor hood. *Spoiler Alert*(just to name a few)Robert Patrick and Harvey Kietel play corrupt cops who take it hard in the end. The film leaves you thinking if some bloke got all these great actors to be in his picture and it sucked then I could make a masterpiece with the biggest Hollywood top notch line up ever ensembled for a major motion picture. I think the main con in this film is its script, it has or should I say had a lot of potential that was taken in the wrong direction. It is a pretty bad film but I am sucker for New York crime movies, especial Scorsese pics, but over all I give it 6 out of 10 stars solely for that reason.

Absolutely the worst film ever made. (except for battlefield earth) I cannot emphasize enough how bad this movie is I could write a book on every thing this movie did wrong and all the bad things about it but since I don't have the respect for it ill just write this little rant.

Badlands (1973)
Fine piece of cinema.
20 June 2000
Excellent debut film making by Terrence Malick. Great story and great acting make this poem on celluloid a must see. Should not be missed and if you like this one be sure to see his second film Days of Heaven.

Tagline: In 1959 a lot of people were killing time. Kit and Holly were killing people

Even if that tagline for Badlands doesn't interest you the film will.

This was a masterpiece compared to the original.
5 June 2000
This movie was very entertaining and was phenomenal compared to the original but still lacked my things. Gone in 60 Seconds star Nicholas cage and the lovely Angelina Jolie as car theifs. The story is a little bit different from the original Gone in 60 Seconds. This time there's a gang of car theifs who have to pull of an incredible heist where the robbers have to steal 100 car in order to save Nicholas Cages son whose in major debt. This film is very entertaining but like the first one it just doesn't do it for me, yeah, there's a lot of action and plenty of hott car and girls but the story is just so poorly constructed and very very poorly made. In the end it gets 3 out of 5.

September (1987)
Allen lays a touch of Bergman on September.
5 June 2000
September is a very sad time of year. Its a time of year when all the leaves begin to fall and every thing is all gloomy and orange. Its almost like a person they have all this outer layering and all these secrets built up in side. When we let theses secrets out its kinda like the leaves falling, we get to see what's hiding under all those leaves. And that's why I think Woody Allen named this film. It would make perfect sense and would fit with the story just right. The movie is about a group of friends who get together and talk and share old times and find out more than they knew about each other. They all are stuck inside due to a thunder storm. And while they are inside their lives begin to unreal. The film was shot in a orangeish tint which goes along perfectly for the title and for the season. It wasn't Allen's best, but if your a fan of Allen it's a must see.

The 400 Blows (1959)
10/10
The 400 Blows is easily one of the best to come out the French new wave.
23 May 2000
François Truffaut's transformation from film critic to film maker is certainly appreciated by many and we see why in François's fist feature film, The 400 blows, a break through masterpiece not only exploding the French new wave but captivating audiences world wide with it's brilliance. Jean-Pierre Léaud gives a performance of a life time in the first installment of Truffaut's autobiographical youth, he stars as Antoine Doinel a troubled Parisian boy who struggles with authority and dealing with his common life. There is something about this film that really captivates me and inspires me, it's just got this incredible feeling to it that you'll never forget. Beautiful cinematography, superbly acted, brilliant story telling, and with a touch of ingenious directing this easily stands as one of the greatest films of all time. This movie is a must see, not only for film buffs but for anyone who likes movies in general 5 out of 5 stars!

I was expecting bad but this is ridiculous.
22 May 2000
: I was expecting bad but this is ridiculous.

I went to this movie expecting it to be bad and you know when you expect a bad movie it has a better chance of being good but this sucked! It is just all-around lame. Everything about this movie was bad, the costumes were lame and looked like they bought them at a local kmart, the story has to be the worst thing about this poor attempt of a film, it is so loose and left and changed so may thing s from the book that it seems like it should be loosely based on the book, the names of the characters are lame for example and i am not making this up Johnny goodboy is the name of the main character and the bad guys like john Travolta are called psyhclos(lol) now tell me that isn't gay. i think the director needs to take a little more time thinking about his camera angles because normally they are chosen to be on an angle for a reason but this director doesn't seem to understand because every and i mean every shot is on an angle (maybe the guys just got a crooked neck). This is just one of the worst films i have ever seen and certainly the worst novel to film movie ever. Even the special effects sucked and that was the only thing i was looking forward to at all even tough i wasn't looking forward to see this movie. If my opinon means anything at all dont see this attempt of a movie. F. 0 out of 5 starts. crap.

ANOTHER DOSE OF ALLEN
20 May 2000
Small time crooks is another excellent film from woody Allen. It stars Allen as a small time crook whose come up with another "genius idea" for his next attempt to get some dough. His cookie making wife is played by Tracy Ullman in her best performance ever. Allen and his crooks decide to buy a pizza place a couple of stores down from a bank and dig their way under the banks vault and of course take the dough, while Allen's wife sells cookies up stairs. Only his wife cookies are delicious and become a big hit and draw too much attention to their digging. The story takes then takes some big changes but I don't want to give away too much so i'll leave it at that. Its a very excellent film with plenty classic Allen comedy with a very modern touch. If you like woody Allen this is a must see. I have to say one other thing woody looks really old science deconstructing Harry. I give it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Enjoy.

Stanley Kubricks finally haunting masterpiece.
20 May 2000
This was Stanley Kubric's last masterpiece. This is certainly his best since a clock work orange, but it may need more than one viewing because if you a Kubrick fan and you haven't seen this yet (although if your a Kubrick fan i highly doubt you haven't seen this yet) your probably expecting a lot and why shouldn't you be, all of his other films were mostly masterpieces and with a genius whose got a thing for perfection you should be expecting a lot and the fact that he hasn't made a film in over ten years, so when you first watch it and there's all that excitement built up it might let you down because if you think about it the last time a Kubrick movie was released it was 1987 and I'm afraid to say the times have changed since then and so has the genius and his ideas so it will be a little to much at first for a diehard Kubrick fan so I highly recommend multiple viewing and you'll get used to this difference. It is very well shot, beautiful lighting, almost feels dream like, and superbly casted and acted by Cruise and Kidman and good supporting acting from Sydney Pollack, with all that and so much more makes this movie one of Kubricks best and will be sought after and admired for years to come.

Annie Hall (1977)
A masterpiece......
18 May 2000
Woody Allen's comedy about a comic named Alvey Singer(Woody Allen) who meets a girl named Annie Hall(Diane Keaton)and fall in love. Its a brilliant comedy which certainly deserved the pest picture over star wars. It is my personal favorite film of all time. It is the best portrayal of a relationship on the silver screen ever. Very, well written, very well directed, and very well acted. Alvy Singer meets Annie through a friend at a tennis match and instant karma emerges between them. After tennis Annie needs a ride home so of course woody wouldn't let her down and offers her a ride which soon turns into going to his house for a drink and that's when one of the most honest and hilarious scenes takes place were alvy and Annie are talking and in subtitles below translate what they are thinking about what one another is saying and what they are thinking, I have to say that is the best written scene ive ever seen, in any movie. They soon begin to go out and then the brilliant story goes on it is very funny as it is touching and real. If you haven't seen this ingenious masterpiece yet I highly recommend you see this film. Even though most Allen films offend something or someone and a lot of people don't like him for this and the fact they cant watch his movies without making a comment I really think you should give this one a try and maybe if your a star wars fan, don't you want to see why it one best picture.

Being the adventures of a young man whose principal interests are rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven
18 May 2000
Warning: Spoilers
This masterpiece is the greatest transformation from novel to film I have ever seen and probably ever see. Notorious for its controversy and initial x rating it stands as one of the greatest films in cinematic history. Although its controversy has worn off it still is shocking and moving and will change you for ever. Its about a gang of kids who get there kicks off of stealing violence and rape. Until the leader Alex is betrayed by his "droogs" and is caught for a crime by the police. He then spends his time in jail till a new experiment for changing young trouble makers like himself. He then becomes a changed man and is sent back into the real world. SPOILER ALERT. He then finds out his parents don't want him any more and have gotten a new son to replace him and that his friends are now cops and still hate him. He then winds up in one of his victims houses and then commits suicide. Although this review blows I hope you learn one thing that a clock work orange is the greatest movie ever and Stanley kubrick is a genius and that I spent no time writing this review.

Dinosaur (2000)
1/10
Disneys latest attempt for summer success
16 May 2000
Dinosaur. Disney's latest movie with plenty of special effects and a stunning mix of real backgrounds and computer animated dinosaurs, but it basically lacks 3 things; length, story, and character development. It starts of with basically the trailer that was shown in the theater of a dino egg being bounced and rolled around and in that egg was a baby dino failed into the hands of some prejudice monkeys who at first decide to dispose of it until they stop acting like monkeys and come to their sense and take him in. Then it skips from the baby dino to a full grown dino without any indication of this time lapse leaving you guessing that its the same dino because there is no indication of his name till after this time lapse. Then there is a meteor shower and aladar(the now full grown dino) carries his parent monkey to a safer place. While roaming throughout the desert they come across other wandering dinos and team up to find a better place to live. After 20 minutes of roaming in the desert the dinos finally find a better land. After they find this better land they come across some mean dinos that don't like the other dinos on their land decide to fight. In the end its just a happy ending with aladar getting some female dino that he's had his eye on and defeating the bad dinos. Its too short being only 1 hour and 22 minutes and because of that the story doesn't have enough time to grow and develop. Disney should stick to regular animation till computer animation becomes less costly because for price they payed to make dino was a waste.
