Danish director Berit Madsen didn’t set out to tell a story about feminism in Iran. She just met a pretty amazing 14-year-old girl who wanted to learn about the stars, and hoped to do justice to her story.
“I’d heard about this place which had an astronomy club going on and this teacher who wanted to build an observatory, and that boys and girls would go out alone to watch the stars,” Madsen, director of the Sundance documentary Sepideh, tells EW. “Even knowing Iran it was bizarre to me, because you’re not supposed to expect stuff like that to happen.

Sepideh takes us inside a place where young girls are discouraged from envisioning a world outside of their own, but do so anyway. Berit Madsen’s debut film is a love story first and a documentary second, telling the heartbreaking and powerful tale of Sepideh Hooshyar, a high school student in Iran who dreams of a life among the stars. At age seventeen, Sepideh is a revolutionary thinker—an aspiring astronaut in a society that condemns her for going outside at night to stargaze, for learning how to use a telescope before learning how to cook. The film plays seamlessly—almost like a...

While the U.S. Documentary Competition is generally known for it’s politically charged intensity, the World Cinema Documentary Competition tends to be a little more well rounded. Rather than bluntly educating and strongly suggesting, the imports are often more observational in their approach, asking us to engage and form our own opinions on the subjects, or often the cultures, presented. Think last year’s Best Director Award winner The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear by Tinatin Gurchiani, or Qi Zhao’s Fallen City as prime examples, but let’s not forget there are also films of social urgency, such as Jehane Noujaim’s The Square, which just made the Oscar docu short list this week. This year’s programme looks no less diverse.
