The Conclusion is in the End of the Credits
claudio_carvalho14 August 2010
The paramedic Jack (Jason Mewes) works in the graveyard shift and is needy of love since his girlfriend Sherry (Jordan Madley) dumped him. His peer Roger (Richard Fitzpatrick) is bored of his laments in the ambulance and suggests him to date another girl. While going home after hours, he sees a beautiful woman covered with blood in the alley and she refuses to go to the hospital. Jack brings the stranger home and nurses her until she is recovered and tells her name, Danika (Erica Cox). Jack falls in love with Danika that seems to be drug addicted suffering from withdraw symptoms. Sooner Jack discovers that Danika is a vampire and she is not addicted but starving of blood and he has a serious problem at home.

"Bitten" is a politically incorrect comedy about the love between a lovelorn paramedic and a sexy vampire starved of blood. The story is entertaining and Jason "Jay" Mewes and Richard Fitzpatrick are very funny most of the time. I was disappointed with the open end of the film but I found that the conclusion is actually in the end of the credits with Roger nursing Jack. My vote is five.

Title (Brazil): "Amor Entre Vampiros" ("Love Between Vampires")

I was bitten when comedy and horror collapse
trashgang10 February 2009
I found out at the discussion boards on the net that everybody wants to see this flick or have seen it and would like to buy it. Lucky as I am I found it over here for the ridiculous price of 3 euro. I hesitated if I would buy it or leave it but something told me, buy it. So I did and didn't know what I should expect. Yes, I've noticed that it is a comedy with horror elements. Is it, well, for me it's more a horror with black comedy elements. When the boys ex has been bitten and dies he has to hide the body, the music they used in that particular scene is to say the least well chosen. In fact there are only three main actors in this flick, so I guess the budget was low but the red stuff flows, not in a gory style, but it flows. Okay, there are others involved but they all have a small piece in this flick. Anyway, the three actors are great, really believable. Sometimes the movie made me think of "The Addiction" but then combined with black comedy. I won't spoil the plot or what happens in this flick but is surely recommendable to horror geeks. And please if you watch it watch it until the end and that means after the end credits. A big cheer to Erica Cox, I never heard of her and due to research I came beware that she only appeared in 4 movies. She's is really believable and shows it all, if you understand me. To play against two wellknown actors as Richard Fitzpatrick, who is believable too, and Jason Mewes, who we knew from other flicks like Feast and less known Vulgar isn't that simple. Anyway, this is a great movie, you surely will have a laugh but don't exaggerate, they could see your fangs...

Bitten
Scarecrow-8820 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
You want a downer. Jason Mewes is Jack, a paramedic working the godawful graveyard shift with an old timer, Roger(Richard Fitzpatrick), whose moral compass points in one direction it seems(his dick) and any advice on relationships often concern getting laid. He lives in a terrible neighborhood, and has a dump for an apartment. His needy, spoiled ex-girlfriend left him for a yoga instructor. He can't even go into a service station to get a slim jim and soda without the Indian store owner kicking him out despite the fact that he's a paramedic with blood on his shirt whose occupation is to help save lives. This guy, who really just wants love and a little bit of respect, deserves a break. We see that he and Roger deal with junkies, wackos, and other undesirables and this nightly grind is taking it's toll. That and the bitch who won't stop leaving messages on his answering machine about "getting her sh*bleep*it back". Then, one night, Jack finds a beautiful woman covered in blood and his life will never be the same after helping her..she is, in fact, a vampire, having been bitten by at some point before Jack found her in a heap, lying in the garbage near his apartment.

I imagine Mewes had been dying/itching to portray someone other than a wise-cracking stoner, with a little more depth and BITTEN was a role which allowed him to do so. He's easy-going, tolerant, thoughtful, sensitive and kind(interesting enough, he's also vulnerable, as we see when Roger comments on ex Sherry's constant abuse towards Jack to him during their times at work). He's fed up with witnessing the worst of humankind on a daily basis, for sure, and who wouldn't tire at seeing life's miseries every night? Roger's a piece of work. Sex is always on his mind and his conversations with Jack often result in too many details involving how he'd like to "take a poke" or "does she do anal?" among other lewd comments. Many scenes with Roger often start after he's "dropped a load"(he has irritable bowel syndrome). Once Danika starts to feed, Jack's life becomes increasingly complicated. First from Sherry who meets Danika while plundering through Jack's things looking for her own possessions in the apartment. Then, from a pimp/drug dealer(and his underling), and, before you know it, Danika's insatiable blood thirst seriously demands much from Jack as he tries to appease her(the price for love, I guess). I mean, eventually, Jack runs out of room to store the bodies of Danika's victims and he's always the one having to clean up after her. "It's never enough." That's what Jack deals with and Roger is starting to become suspicious(three straight shifts without Jack are more than a little suspect).

I figure fans of horror movies about sexy vamps will find BITTEN to their liking as Erica Cox is certainly easy on the eyes and almost always in panties and a t-shirt(and she does appear scantily clad on numerous occasions). The f-bombs become redundant after a while, but those familiar with anything featuring Mewes, I imagine, have developed an immunity to profanity. The movie almost exclusively occurs(except when Mewes and Fitzpatrick are on the job)in Jack's apartment or just outside. I could stand and admire Cox's form for hours, but her character doesn't exactly evolve, to tell you the truth. I wanted a reason to accept that, even though she's ravishing, Jack would continue to put up with her. She's sexy, and it doesn't really go beyond the surface, which, if I'm up front and honest, gets to be a bit hard to swallow(why would he follow her down such a dark road just because she's delectable? Is risking your life over a piece of ass really worth it? That's a point Roger makes which I can agree with)..I just have a hard time believing Jack would jeopardize his life for a woman whose past remains murky. And, BITTEN never elaborates or clues us in as to who Danika is(or was before her neck was gnawed upon). Jordan Madley appears briefly as Jack's former flame, Sherry. Not much in the way of vamp violence, some necking. Cox's sexy body and Fitzpatrick's quirky character might add some weight this minor vampire tale.

Average vampire flick
billcr1224 May 2012
Bitten is a low budget black comedy-horror film, in the realm of Shaun of the Dead. Jack is a paramedic who has just broken up with his girlfriend when he comes upon a sexy young lady, bleeding in an alley. He takes her to his place and quickly discovers that she is a vampire who needs blood in order to survive. Danika kills his ex when she tries to pick up her stuff. Jack puts a stake through her heart when she comes back to life.

The murders become more and more frequent and Danika's violence and thirst for blood increase. His best friend from work helps him work out a plan to terminate his troublesome new roommate, and this leads to an interesting conclusion. The acting is competent for what it is; not exactly Hamlet, but a fun distraction for ninety minutes.

Who could have guessed that Jason Mewes wasn't leading man material?
zetes3 October 2010
Awful vampire romance/comedy starring, of all people, Jason Mewes (you know, Jay, as in Jay and Silent Bob, from the Kevin Smith movies). He plays a paramedic who discovers a supermodel covered in blood and writhing in a pile of garbage and immediately drags her into his apartment to recover (presumably from an addiction to drugs, but really she's a vampire jonesing for blood). There are three good reasons to watch this movie, and you can see them all right here: www.gossipcraze.com/_mm/_d/_ext2/48245/big_Erica Cox01.jpg. Yeah, Erica Cox is extraordinarily hot. WAY too hot for Jason Mewes, at any rate. The film is pretty ineptly made. There's a threesome scene between Cox, another hottie and Mewes (who could probably just have stayed away), and it's one of the most incoherent sex scenes ever. The comedy is generally very unfunny, though I did like Mewes' filthy-minded co-worker (Richard Fitzpatrick), who keeps suggesting that Mewes sodomize his new girlfriend. Only worth it for the quality T&A. Otherwise, avoid.

This could be quite fun to watch, if one is in the right mindset . . .
charles00023 December 2012
There are B- grade movies . . . and then there are way, way . . . way below B- grade movies. This is absolutely one of them.

Actually, this is one of those films that is so completely ridiculous and awful that it could become a true classic, sort of the "Plan 9 From Outer Space" of the modern vampire genre'.

I can't possibly imagine anyone connected with this project was actually serious while they were in production. They must have been having quite a party offset, having way too much fun while shooting this thing.

Erica Cox is fun to watch (what a perfect name), I have to admit.

In an attempt to put some sort of life into this creation, there is a bit of quasi porn woven into the "plot" (I use that word very sparingly here). This could be quite fun to watch, if one is in the right mindset.

Perhaps some recreational imbibement should be recommended before attempting to view this.

OK . . . considering its comedy value, I could actually offer (gasp) 5 stars for this one. But be warned, this is definitely not academy award material.

Vampire girlfriend angst
Leofwine_draca27 September 2011
I enjoyed this low budget comedy which explores the perils of having a vampire for a girlfriend. It's painfully obvious that the producers of this independent movie didn't have a great deal of money to throw around, as almost the whole film takes place in a single location and in terms of special effects, fake blood and contact lenses are all we get. But the profane script just gets better as the story progresses and I ended up having a ball with it. It's as if the scriptwriter started out attempting to make a serious movie, then threw his hands up in the air and decided to enjoy himself.

Much of the comic interplay comes from the pairing of two ambulance drivers (Jason Mewes and the deliciously bad taste Richard Fitzpatrick) who curse, shout and rant at the world in general. The story, about Mewes falling in love with a girl who's always hungry, is fairly by the by, and the fun lies in the execution. It's as if the people who made this knew they didn't have a great deal to work with, so they just had fun instead.

A great deal of the scenes are played for titillation. Erica Cox either appears nude or in an extraordinarily skimpy little top. She's certainly one of the most arresting vampires I've seen on screen. Not content with that, they throw in a brief lesbian scene as well. Mewes is fun, and that sense of enjoyment rubs off, allowing you to ignore the plot holes (why don't the drug dealers come back?) and the fact that not a great deal happens during the film after all. Sure, the ending is over-the-top and cheesy in the extreme, but as a whole BITTEN kicks the asses of plenty of other similar independent horror films.

Holy shite, you ate my ex-girlfriend! I don't know whether I call the police or buy you flowers.
lastliberal-853-25370814 October 2011
Jason Mewes (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob, Mallrats) is a para medic who finds a girl in trouble (Erica Cox). Trouble is, she has a bloody secret.

The problem is that Danika (Cox) has some really strange foreplay issues. In order not to hurt Jack (Mewes), she has to have her foreplay with someone else before they have sex. Of course, when she has her foreplay with Maya (Amy Lynn Grover), it really gets interesting. Now we have two gorgeous naked babes in bed covered in blood.

Jack is really flipping out, because he has to clean up the mess. The body count is really rising.

How is he going to solve his problem? Normal women are tough enough, but a vampire?

Really funny.

goes nowhere
catoelder7 September 2010
This is not really a vampire flick, nor is it a vampire comedy flick. So ,it has no core, and thus wanders aimlessly with no drive;no direction;no momentum. The 2 actresses(Erica and Amy somethings) are gorgeous. The lead male is awful beyond belief. The set is out of a high school theatre production.I can only guess that this film benefited from some Canadian taxpayer giveaways to be made at all. So,well done Erica and Amy,whom we will probably never hear from again ,in spite of their loveliness ,even though they deserve better. Boo on the rest of you associated with this poor effort.Hopefully we won't be hearing from you all again.

Better than I expected but still not exactly a masterpiece.
poolandrews15 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Bitten starts as a paramedic named Jack (Jason Mewes) returns to his apartment to find a bloody & injured woman named Danika (Erica Cox) lying between some rubbish bins, against his better judgement Jack decides to help Danika & takes her to his apartment. Jack cleans Danika up & treats a neck wound she has, Jack begins to fall in love with Danika who at first appears all exotic, mysterious & beautiful. However things take a turn for the worse when Danika murders Jack's ex-girlfriend Sherry (Jordan Madley) sprouts fangs & drinks her blood, Danika is a Vampire who needs fresh human blood to survive & a lovesick Jack goes along with it at the start. As the bodies pile up & the guilt begins to hit Jack realises that he must put an end to his & Danika's relationship & put an end to her murdering blood drinking ways...

This Canadian production was directed by Harvey Glazer & could be described as a dark comic horror about twisted love & a hot looking Vampire girl, while nothing amazing I did actually quite like Bitten for what it was. The script is nothing that original in the sense of a love affair between a Vampire & a mortal being that has been the plot for many a Vampire film before but there's a nice dark comic edge here with some amusing filthy foul mouthed one-liners, a few mildly amusing gags & there's a fair amount of blood splatter, nudity & sex. There's no real origin behind Danika & her Vampirism, it's never really made clear if Danika was a Vampire all the time or was turned into one during an attack. Bitten is limited in ambition, the majority of the film is set inside Jack's dark apartment & apart from the scene when Jack finds her Danika never actually leaves the apartment. At a little over 80 minutes in length Bitten moves along at a decent enough pace, it has a good laid-back vibe & is watchable if your a horror fan but there's not too much to it & it does get a little repetitive as there seems to be endless chatter about Danika & her needs. Bitten also tries to say a few things about relationship's, dependency & work but it's hardly life changing stuff. Keep watching after the end credits as there's an extra scene which dilutes the ambiguous ending a little although I am sure some will like the sense of closure.

The film looks quite good, it's competent even though it's quite darkly lit. Erica Cox is a real hottie & she gets her breast's out on several occasion & for that we thank her. There are a few sex scenes including a threesome with a hot blonde which is also appreciated. As far as blood & gore goes there's a lot of blood splatter but not that much actual gore or special effects, there's a dead rotting corpse & that's about it. There's a really odd scene early on set in a shop where an obviously exaggerated Asian shop keeper directs loads of abuse at Jack for no good reason while later on Jack is sent to treat him after a robbery although we never find out if the guy lives or dies in what I assume to be a message about treating people right. There is also two bizarre scenes which are meant to be funny as Jack cleans up the bloody mess left by Danika after she feeds which are montages set to what sounds like a child's song from Barney the Dinosaur about tidying up your mess.

Filmed in Ontario in Canada this looks like it had a reasonable budget, sure it's not Hollywood money but it looks quite nice with good production values. The acting is good, the two leads are pretty good with Erica Cox very attractive to go with it. Richard Fitzpatrick as Roger the comedy relief is amusing as he constantly talks about taking a crap.

Bitten is a decent little horror comedy actually, it was a lot better than I thought it would be & together with some nudity & a few darkly comedic moments this turned out very watchable. Although nothing that memorable or amazing I liked it for what it was.

Shaking my head...
jseynopsis30 August 2020
This is a seriously bad bad portfolio on the actors'/actress' filmography. I feel so sorry for them. Their acting were good, but the film just simply failed terribly. Story failed, directing failed, lighting failed, music/audio failed, editing was still decent.

If they went without the comedic parts, and attempted a serious horror film instead, it might potentially be a 5 or 6/10 rated film. And with a better choice of music/audio, it could potentially be a 6 or 7/10. Their comedic parts were not funny at all, they were simply childish! And I can't stand all the music they'd used in the film, ESPECIALLY the guitar strumming at every beginning of a chapter. It was so so turn off....

I feel so sorry for the actors/actress.

Intriguing independent horror film has some good moments.
hu6759 February 2009
A young paramedic by the name of Jack (Jason Mewes) suffered from his last relationship. He works night with his only middle-age perverter buddy (Richard Fitzpatrick). Jack meets a woman (Erica Cox) from a dumpster and helps her. Which this mysterious woman lost of a lot of blood. He cleans her up and falls in love with her. But this attractive woman isn't what she seems to be. She is actually a vampire. He decides to pick up lowlifes from the streets to feed her but soon enough... it gets out of hand.

Directed by Harvey Glazer (Kickin It Old Skool) made an interesting if not entirely successful black comedy/horror film. There's a few effective moments here and there. Mewes and Cox do well with their performances. The odd moments of dark humour doesn't always works but it later improves, when the story finally gets better. Although the conclusion could have been much stronger. Cox certainly looks great with her odd eye contacts, being topless half of the time and even with her face covered in blood. Worth a look, especially if you are a fan of Mewes. (*** ½/*****).

Not bad at all and far from politically correct
abisio9 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I never had great appreciation on Jason Mewes stoned characters even if they are fun to watch; but this time is a clean person, full of personality issues though. In any case he delivers a solid, sometimes funny and sometimes sad performance as a paramedic in personal crisis. It is a pity that Erica Cox (aside from an excellent body, generously shown), is not capable of any acting; otherwise this will be an above average; almost very good movie.

Jack (Mewes), a paramedic in the middle of a live crisis (his fiancée betrayed him and his life goes nowhere) finds Danika (Cox), a beautiful soon-to-become vampire and decides to protect her while falling for her. The vampire, of course needs to feed very often and her tastes are expensive in terms of human lives.

The budget is minimal; most of the action occurs inside Jack's apartment and the all but the three characters existed to become food.

However, there is a rather cruel portrait of middle to low class society hidden before the surface. People passing through life; completely dehumanized and selfish with no moral values. Jack had refused to return his fiancée her stuff; because he is a fetish and also as a way to get her back; however when Danike kills her; he gets very happy because she cheated on him. Jack's best friend Roger is only concerned about sex and has no respect people or privacy. Jack neighbors' are drug dealers or miserable people. With this kind of twisted people around; the vampire feels almost natural.

It is really sad the movie never goes beyond the light satire. An interested and very dark comedy could come out of that with just a little touching on the story and a stricter actor's direction.

No Teeth...
JoeytheBrit1 April 2010
Jack (Jason Mewes) is a paramedic working the night shift who is depressed by his lack of girl-meeting opportunities after being dumped by his girlfriend. He spends most of his time complaining about his lot to his older workmate (Richard Fitzpatrick - who looks a lot like Rod Steiger here) who is worryingly obsessed with all things anal, until he discovers one hot - but blood-splattered - chick (Erica Cox) lying in the rubbish outside his apartment. Jack takes her to his apartment to tend her wounds and an intimacy grows between them even as Jack begins to have doubts about her nocturnal habits…

I can't recall seeing many vampire films that focus on the effect of a newly-acquired status as a vampire on the romantic relationship of the person afflicted and their loved one, so I suppose this cheap direct-to-video horror is to be applauded on that count. Sadly, the subject is handled in such a dull, repetitive manner that there's little else to recommend it.

The film's lack of budget is obvious from the murky lighting - even Jack's apartment is in perpetual darkness - and the negligible number of locations, but a small budget has never been a drawback to a talented, creative director. In fact, it can very often serve as a source of inspiration simply because the lack of money calls upon a certain amount of ingenuity and creativity on the parts of the writer and director. Unfortunately, neither party are capable of rising to the challenge with any authority, even though the film starts off quite promisingly with some telling moments in the interplay between Jack and his older colleague (before, that is, the anal references become boringly frequent). Ironically, it's when Danika, the sultry, recently-turned vampiress appears on the scene that the plot becomes mired in the repetitive doldrums from which it never recovers. By the final reel, the script has deteriorated to the point where Jack and Roger (Fitzpatrick) are shouting every line to each other, and inserting an expletive in every sentence in a futile attempt to inject some excitement into the lacklustre proceedings..

Definitely didn't have any bite
Nywildcat14 January 2012
Boy looses girl, boy meets vampire girl, boy "feeds" girl, boy wonders what the heck he's doing. We've seen it all before folks, nothing new here, but we've seen it done better.

I've pretty much summed up the entire plot above, so there really isn't much more to add. This movie tries hard to be a comedy/horror and fails in both parts. There are no thrills/chills or really scary scenes (except perhaps to a 5 year old), the attempts at humor are all bathroom grade (literally, as one character has IBS and constantly talks about his bowel movements). Of course their is gratuitous nudity to keep the straight male audience at least somewhat interested.

I've seen a hell of a lot worse movies in my horror watching career. So although I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I wouldn't say stay away at all costs.

I think the film has bitten off more than it can chew..!
smiley-3216 June 2011
I rented this out not too long ago. I was hoping for the usual stuff. Vampires, terror, something was going me make me sit there and watch it. What did i get? Nothing! Obviously yes! It was made at a low budget. But I was getting bored with the film as I continued to watch it. The whole plot didn't make no sense. OK, this guy (Mewes) wants to this girl (Cox) to the hospital, but she refuses to go. I thought OK.. what happens after that? Same old pappy-show! The plot begins to run out of steam and here am I thinking.. when is this going to end? Don't get me wrong though.. I've seen better vampire movies. Better than this crap! I hated it anyway. If I wanted to a vampire movie.. I'd make it a vampire movie.

As for this.. this film didn't live up to expectations. A total disappointment. Thumbs down for this rubbish!

Not A Bad Vampire Flick
gwnightscream20 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This 2008 horror comedy features Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob) as a paramedic who is tired of the nightlife and has recently broke up with his girlfriend. He hopes to find love again plus more daytime, but soon he meets a beautiful, mysterious woman, Danika (Erica Cox) who turns out to be vampire. This isn't bad, it has some bloody, erotic and humorous moments mixed together. If you enjoy horror or horror comedies, give this one a try.

"Bitten" good !
ssunter26 August 2010
Although is not a top movie, "Bitten" is sure worth watching.. It is a low budget movie but is hardcore of a movie which i enjoyed..

The actors are all superb and very professional in their work. Erica Cox is the beautiful vampire in the movie sure you would love to be bitten.. It exaggerates in a way the beautiful women of our times... Having a hell whole a lot of your everything in life..

This is first time i am seeing Jason Mewes in a lead role.. I think he is good as usual and has this charisma to lead a movie from beginning to end.. Mewes has always an attraction for his "naive" pure/real character where you can distract even from his acting performance.. In the movie he is a working class guy trying to be good and have a meaning in his life.. a woman, a family till he meets the vampire !

The movie as a production has this naive and amateur texture which you feel home.. Well.. can be a classic in my book.. I like it!..

There's no Apocalypse but people do get Bitten
Stevieboy66625 October 2023
Jack is a paramedic who works the graveyard shifts alongside his friend, the ever wisecracking Roger. Jack has a foul mouth but he's a charitable guy, when he finds a young woman called Danika in a very poor state outside one night he takes her back to his apartment to nurse her back to health. However he soon discovers that she is a vampire and becomes complicit in finding victims for her to bite. This turns out to be good fun. Danika is an attractive young vampire and she is often seen scantily dressed or partially naked. I picked this up very cheap on DVD under the title "Vampire Apocalypse" but the original title "Bitten" is far more apt, there is certainly no apocalypse here! Horror comedy either works or it doesn't but the makers managed to get the balance right. That doesn't necessarily make this a good movie because it isn't but it's certainly not a bad one either. Couple of amusing lines - "You ate my ex girlfriend" and "Is she deader?" I'd quote more but there is a great deal of swearing and crude language throughout. Quite violent at times too, hence the BBFC 18 rating. Don't eject during the end credits as there is a post credit scene. I doubt that I'd give this a repeat viewing but did find it reasonably enjoyable.

Pretty enjoyable but gotta love low budget vamp flicks
destroyerwod22 September 2021
I noticed this movie because of the cover. I am a sucker for beautifull vampire chicks love stories with humans. Overall i taught the movie was fairly enjoyable but you have to consider its very low budget altough the budget is used decently. The special effects are fine, the blood as well, its not in the "so bad its good" category or even "just bad" that you can see in some horror movies using cgi while having a small budget or such. They kept everything (from what i can tell) practical and it does the job fine.

The story is interesting altough i kinda wished we knew a bit more. Its very grounded in the same location for the majority of the movie. The atmosphere was pretty enjoyable tough and i enjoyed the dialogues between the characters.

Honestly i got to admit as i said before, i really get into these vampire ladies "love" story with humans and i was quite tipsy so i really got into it, but thats the way i enjoy watching my movies the most, especially those types.

I would recommand but its not for everyone, just know what you gonna watch !

Watchable trash.

Warning: Spoilers
Bitten has a decent premise and an alluring beauty in Erica Cox, but settles for silly and low-brow entertainment.

It's obviously intended to be funny, but there's only a smidgen of humour in it and at times it's just completely stupid. Jason Mewes isn't lead material. If you take Erica out of this film, it's truly a horror.

Hugely entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
A great way to kill some time... Watch this movie and you'll not regret it! It has the usual elements of vampire movies... seduction, carnal appetites, the innocents, the guilty... but in this one there are scenes that imprinted themselves into my consciousness probably forever. The image of a beautiful nude female vampire covered with blood and thrusting on top of her deceased victim is so surrealistic and and unforgettable I had to break my silence and write a spoiler about it. The makers of this film obviously devoted some thought to the dark world of vampires. Or maybe they were just having fun with it... in either case, it's a must see! If you want reality, turn off your TV and go outside... but if you want to be entertained, watch this one! Hopefully it will someday be released in the US without being cut to death... :)

An interesting misfire
neil-47626 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
So you're a paramedic who finds a blood-covered woman in a dumpster. Because she is excessively shouty and jittery, you take her home (nearby) to clean her up. This is when you discover that she is a hottie who has amnesia, although it turns out that her name is Danika. You give her some of the clothes your ex-girlfriend has left behind. The next day she gets serious jitters. You think she is some sort of drug addict. However, when your ex-girlfriend turns up and Danika bites her in the neck and drinks her blood, it starts to become clear that she's actually a vampire. Who requires regular feeding...

This movie makes a wholehearted attempt to succeed as a horror comedy and, indeed, there are moments of genuine horror and moments of genuine comedy (rather more of the latter, and at least one of both). Something about it doesn't quite jell, though.

It is interesting to see Jason Mewes performing quite successfully away from Kevin Smith (with just as many f-words as usual, however), and Erica Cox is very fetchingly clothesless, if silicon-enhanced, as Danika (who seems to be quite a nice person except for her tendency to vampirise people to death).

It doesn't suck

It wasn't really that bad. The acting's ok. The tension between the two leads is believable. It does what it's supposed to do and in that regard, it's fine. Erica Cox plays the vampiress, Danika. Newly turned and struggling to control her bloodlust. Helping her is Jack(Jason Mewes) who also struggles with many other things such as his stressful life as a paramedic.

The movie's not bad, it's not great but it's serviceable. The sex scenes are good(though sometimes they're random) and the story's pretty straightforward. If you like vampire films than this's for you.

Moderately fun horror-comedy
I_Ailurophile9 October 2021
Often crass, crude dialogue and otherwise humor includes casual racism and sexism, informing us right away how very unserious 'Bitten' is with further emphasis provided by pointedly inelegant transitions. It's also hard to ignore the casting of Jason Mewes as the protagonist - I'm not sure that I've ever seen him in a movie that wasn't a Kevin Smith production, and his involvement gives the title a particular flavor in and of itself. The writing and execution is direct and forthright, unbothered by notions of subtlety or delicacy. Against all odds, it's that latter aspect that allows the film to offer a few laughs, as we can't help but take morbid glee in some of the drily depicted incongruities. Factor in occasional cleverness, and this is a reasonably good time.

Everything that contrasts with the inherent horror of the scenario helps to build the real comedy: the wardrobe selections, the soundtrack, the romance and sensuality. To that same end, the camera lingers lasciviously on Erica Cox's body, including nudity. Yet that occasional focus never feels tasteless, as it's always employed with either a tasteful, arguably artistic hand, or in the spirit of outrageous joviality.

With that said - against all odds, I actually really like Cox's performance, portraying hapless, hungry Danika with surprising poise, range, and nuance that I appreciate. Mewes' turn as protagonist Jack isn't especially remarkable - the character is less exaggerated and comical than the part of Jay that made him famous, yet quite similar all the same - but he suitably fills the role to help bring the picture to life. It's also worth noting Richard Fitzpatrick as Jack's coworker and friend Roger, a put-upon, sometimes oafish man who nonetheless acts as a mentor and voice of reason.

I appreciate the blood and makeup, and there's unexpectedly swell consideration for light and shadow in the film. Though unquestionably uncouth, unrefined, and rough around the edges, the movie is made pretty solidly overall - and I admire the chuff of including a last, brief scene, following the credits, that concludes it all with a decidedly dark flourish upending the broad tone eliciting entertainment. It's not perfect, and certainly not essential, but ultimately I'm pleased that it's more enjoyable and simply fun than not. As far as horror-comedies go, 'Bitten' is pretty decent, and it's worth a look if you come across it.
