Cindy Williams, the energetic actress who appeared in a pair of Oscar best picture nominees before starring as the idealistic Shirley Feeney on the beloved ABC sitcom Laverne & Shirley, has died. She was 75.
Williams died in Los Angeles on Wednesday after a brief illness, her children, Zak and Emily Hudson, said in a statement released Monday.
“The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed,” the statement said. “Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved.”
After popping up as a pot-smoking hippie in the Maggie Smith-starring Travels With My Aunt (1972), one of the last films directed by George Cukor, Williams took her first big turn in the spotlight when she portrayed Laurie,...

Repeat nominees are the rule of thumb at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where the eligibility period is the calendar year—rather than the TV season, as is the case with the Emmys. So, new shows are traditionally given short shrift, as they've had only a few months of airtime, compared with the whole 12 of the returning series. But this year may be different, considering breakout shows such as "Modern Family," "The Good Wife," and "Nurse Jackie" have emerged as contenders."This has been an awfully good fall," says USA Today's TV critic Robert Bianco. "And I hope the trend would be that some of the new work from the summer and fall will be recognized this year." In addition to Bianco, Back Stage spoke with TV scribes Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly; Chris Beachum, contributor to TheEnvelope.com; and Barry Garron of The Hollywood Reporter to get their picks.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.
8:00
Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

The Emmys are once again almost upon us and there is nothing I find more satisfying than looking down a list of nominees. I don’t know, I just really like it. Anyway, I know many people might not care too much about the Emmys, I’m more of a Golden Globe man myself, but you do have to give it to them for giving 30 Rock the Emmy for best comedy two year in a row, if you don’t know that show Rocks!! So here’s the list and a few comments I thought I’d add to the nominees.
Best Comedy Series
Entourage
Family Guy-Really hope this show doesn’t win, not a big fan as so many others are.
Flight of the Conchords-i’d really like to see this show win, but it definitely won’t.
How I Met Your Mother-I’d also like to see this one win too.

Emmy Awards bosses tricked double-nominee Chandra Wilson into believing she'd been left off this year's shortlist.
The Grey's Anatomy star's name was omitted from a rundown of nominees she was shown before taking to the stage to announce the 2009 candidates on Thursday.
So she was stunned when she discovered she'd picked up two nods for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for Grey's Anatomy and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Accidental Friendship.
A shocked Wilson tells People.com, "We did the rehearsal ahead of time and went down the teleprompter three times. My name wasn’t there, so I was like, 'Cool.'
"I'd been completely duped."...

Chandra Wilson and Jim Parsons, who tell our Victoria Recano about their surprise nominations! Chandra says she was "absolutely shocked" by her double nomination -- for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and Best Lead Actress in a Miniseries. She adds that she is "so honored" to receive the nod for "Accidental Friendship," saying, "It was a fantastic film and I'm so happy to represent it." "You have to call your mother first," Jim says. "I mean, you don't have to -- but I'm going to." Watch the video to see both stars joke about how their co-stars will react, and the drama of finding the right outfit on the big night!

Since the EMMYs have 2,741 categories, we only focus on two things: first, how our favorite shows did and second, which big screen stars other than La Pfeiffer (she's always there with her television kingpin husband) will show up. Which of them got nominated for their small screen sojourns whether longform or more movie-like?
Speaking of which...
Drew Barrymore on the set of Going the Distance
Yes, you, Drew. But you knew she knew (everyone knew) that her affecting work in Grey Gardens as "Little Edie" was going to make the grade. "Big Edie" Jessica Lange also won a nomination for the narrative feature based on -- but also sort of jumping off from and commenting on -- the famous beloved documentary of the same name. I hope to have an interview with their director here soon.
Before we get to the rest of the big screen folks, here's the nominees...

The nominees for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today in Los Angeles, and the show to garner the most nods was 30 Rock, which received a record 22 nominations for a comedy series. With the Emmys expanding their number of nominees from five to six in certain categories, some new shows were finally able to get some recognition, although a few big shows were still overlooked in their final seasons: most notably The Shield and Battlestar Galactica. There are a ton of categories so I only included some of the major nominees below. For the complete list visit the Emmy Awards official website [1]. What do you think of the nominees?
