Katie Couric discussed Matt Lauer, the Me Too movement and female leadership in business at the Dress for Success annual Women Who Inspire breakfast in New York City on Wednesday.
Couric, who spoke during a fireside chat at the nonprofit’s female empowerment event, was asked about Lauer’s ouster from the “Today” show, and the many sexual harassment allegations that have swept the media business over the past two years.
“As you can imagine, I’ve thought a lot about this over the last two years because it has been, to use the phrase that many have used, a reckoning,” Couric said. “It’s been painful for me on many levels, especially when it comes to understanding what was going on with Matt, who I think ultimately turned out to be two very different people, in terms of my relationship with him versus some of the other things that were going on.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the first three episodes of “The Morning Show,” streaming now on Apple TV Plus.
Two years after the “Me Too” hashtag went viral, Apple TV Plus has finally debuted “The Morning Show.”
The new drama arrives in a world that has been rocked by the changing of the Hollywood guard, after high-powered, high-profile players such as Harvey Weinstein, Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer were ousted from their positions amid allegations of sexual abuse (Weinstein will soon go to criminal trial on charges of rape). When the show was first created by Michael Ellenberg, its primary source material was Brian Stelter’s 2013 book, “Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV,” and focused on the chaos that comes when broadcast daytime news programs compete with each other for ratings in an increasingly digital world. While curating a retrospective on Arab women filmmakers at the Tiff Cinematheque in Toronto earlier this summer, programmer Kiva Reardon considered how the foregrounding of marginalized and underrepresented cinematic voices could make an impact in 2019.
“We’ll always have tent-pole, staple retrospectives for big familiar names in North America that tend to be European, white and male,” she said. “So what’s it like to put films that are of equal artistic value on that same platform, and say, ‘Ok, let’s cast these in this spotlight as well, and not put them off to the side?’”
If such an approach might have seemed radical just a few years ago, it’s more and more in step with the times, as film festivals around the world are increasingly rethinking questions of representation and inclusion in the wake of the Me Too movement. Reardon now has a chance to make her mark on the Toronto Intl.

Cannes was ready to celebrate French actor Alain Delon Sunday evening, but Sand Van Roy, the Belgian/Dutch actress who sued French director Luc Besson for rape last year, wanted to make sure the festival also got a message.
Van Roy, who starred in Besson’s “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” walked onto the red carpet for the honorary Palme d’Or honor and screening of “Mr. Klein” with a large temporary tattoo spreading on her back reading “Stop Violence Against Women” with the #MeToo movement symbol. She told Variety that she was protesting because “the industry uses ‘art’ as an excuse to put itself above the law.” She added that “being indifferent is being an accomplice.”
The actress was referring to Delon’s own public comments in which he admitted to having slapped women in his life. Van Roy filed a lawsuit accusing Besson of rape last year,...

Woody Allen shopped around a manuscript for his new memoir, but publishers didn’t want anything to do with it.
A New York Times report detailed how executives at multiple publishing houses rejected Allen’s memoir that he tried to sell late last year largely due to his increasing persona non grata status.
A-list actors, producers, and publishers once flocked to Woody Allen projects, but the directing icon’s reputation has suffered in the wake of the Me Too movement. As greater attention has been paid to allegations of Allen molesting his at the time 7-year-old daughter Dylan Farrow, Hollywood has distanced itself from the auteur. Amazon has shelved his most recent film “A Rainy Day in New York” and several actors have either expressed regret over working with the director or vowed never to work with him again, including Greta Gerwig, Colin Firth, Ellen Page, Michael Caine, and Timothée Chalamet.

Cannes — On the heels of its second edition, Canneseries has signaled a renewed commitment to the questions of gender parity that still rock the television industry, while also looking to push the conversation further still.

Paul Haggis Calls Rape Accusations Against Him ‘Fiction,’ Admits to ‘Consensual’ Oral Sex
In a new court filing, Paul Haggis acknowledges that he had oral sex with a woman who has accused him of rape, but says the encounter was entirely consensual.
In a response to the lawsuit filed against him by Haleigh Breest, a publicist who said Haggis raped her in 2013, the Academy Award-winning director said the accusations are “shocking and scandalous claims of fiction.”
“All sexual activity and interactions between the parties were consensual,” Haggis said in court documents, obtained by TheWrap. He also denies that Breest “lost consciousness as a result of any act.”
