UK kids wouldn’t have survived the 90s without The Crystal Maze, Knightmare, Gladiators and more…
Remember boredom? Boredom was to a nineties childhood what stress is to modern adulthood – a constant and inescapable presence, relieved only by television.
See related Gotham season 4 episode 7 review: A Day In The Narrows
The difference is, even television could be boring in the nineties. Grown-ups exclusively watched One Man And His Dog, The Budget and Ballykissangel, the sort of programmes that gave you Sunday-night-dread any day of the week. Try as you might to escape border collies, Kenneth Clarke and priests having harvest festival scrapes in picturesque Irish villages, it simply wasn’t possible. There were no streaming services to come to your rescue. Video rental was a birthdays-only treat. What else were you supposed to do? Read?
Every so often, a bright light would shine through, illuminating the murk of Ground Force and Oh,...

Well, that was something. ITV launched its new reality show Flockstars tonight and it's fair to say that we are utterly baffled.
The show sees a group of celebs learning how to become shepherds, so it's basically One Man And His Dog but with that one out of N-Dubz (no, not that one - and no, not that one either, he's still recovering from doing the fishing show on ITV 4... the other one).
We couldn't help but wonder what the heck we were watching. Are the contestants involved feeling sheepish now? (Sorry.) Was it just too woolly a concept for primetime? (Sorry.) Is it best if we move on from the terrible puns and onto the 15 questions we have about Flockstars? Probably.
1. Why is it so loud? Good God, the show began and the booming voice and loud music practically knocked us off our chairs. Won't somebody think of the sheepdogs?...

Celebrities have taken on a myriad of challenges in the name of light entertainment – cooking, dancing and even ski-jumping – but a new ITV show aims to add something different to the mix.
In a hilarious move, the broadcaster has remodelled One Man and His Dog to produce Flockstars, a series that sees stars take on sheepdog trials.
Presented by Gabby Logan, the show will feature eight celebrities who have each been paired with a professionally trained sheepdog partner.
Contestants – including veteran DJ Tony Blackburn, Strictly star Brendan Cole, Fazer from N-Dubz and broadcaster Amanda Lamb – will compete against one another in various knockout stages, designed to test their herding skills.
The star deemed to be the most proficient in terms of speed and penalty avoidance across the eight-week series will eventually be awarded the Flockstars Champion Shield.
Of course, completing the tasks using voice control alone is not easy, as the first face-off pair,...

Britain's Got Talent was back with a serious bang tonight - 15 acts of, well, variable quality and one all-important golden buzzer. We've just about calmed down enough to be able to assess the auditionees tonight, so read on for the good, the bad, and the bizarre...
The Good
Matt McCreary - 20, Belfast
Talent: Free runner
Tell us more: Anyone who gets one over on Simon Cowell gets our vote. Matt staged an audacious jump from the balcony, pretended to be injured ("Oh my God, are you really okay?" Simon gasped) and then winked and continued with more astonishing moves (including launching himself over Ant & Dec). "I knew you were kidding," Simon said at the end. Sure. But it was four yeses for Matt.
Magdalena Stilova - 56, Bulgaria
Talent: Contortion
Tell us more: We can't, we're still covering our eyes. Magdalena truly astonished us with the crazy shapes that she managed...

Vin Diesel finds himself cast adrift on a distant and deadly planet in sci-fi horror Riddick, the long-awaited continuation of his Pitch Black saga. Is there anything for a movie geek to enjoy in Justin Bieber: Never Say Never? There's only one way to find out, so here's our review...
As I write, this geek is sat in the bar of Leicester Square's Vue cinema, populated by a mixture of young girls aged 5 to 17 and their doting parental units waiting to watch a modern idol's debut celluloid performance. Just to offset the difference, there's a flute of complementary wine on the table and a cup full of pick'n'mix brought up from the foyer next to it. Never say never, indeed.
Justin Bieber is nearly 17 and around the same age as the oldest fans at this preview screening, or so you'd guess. It's not possible to say for sure how many of the adults, all putting on their best One Man And His Dog game faces to keep their lucky charges from reaching a critical mass of giddiness,...
