It's always interesting to see different visions of the future in film, especially when the story is set in a post-apocalyptic world. It's always a dark, gritty, and bleak place that we hope never happens in real life. As a way to pay tribute to the movies that deal with our dismal fate, video editor Bora Barroso created a video supercut called "The World of Tomorrow," and you can enjoy it below along with a list of films that are represented in the video.
The films used in the video include:
- Mad Max Fury Road
- I Am Legend
- The Book of Eli
- The Road
- Oblivion
- Priest
- Los últimos días
- Carriers
- 28 Days Later
- Children of Men
- 12 Monkeys

When civilization finally crumbles and society is no more, movie fans should be well prepared. After all, Hollywood has been offering up visions of a post-apocalyptic world for years. Bora Barroso, a film student from Madrid, has compiled some striking images from these movies into a dramatic montage called “The World Of Tomorrow (A Tribute).” That’s a friendly, optimistic title, but this is mostly pretty grim stuff. Gray skies, abandoned cities, rusted-out cars, and hopelessly barren landscapes are the order of the day here. Marauding bands of flesh-eating zombies and/or super-intelligent apes are optional but preferred. Mad Max: Fury Road, probably the most colorful and eccentric of the recent post-apocalyptic films, is cited here several times. But that acclaimed sequel hardly has a monopoly on humanity’s bleak future, as evidenced by clips from The Road, The Book Of Eli, Children Of Men, I Am Legend, and other...

Manhattan, Season 2, Episode 6, “33”
Written by Scott Brown & Megan Ferrell Burke
Directed by Kimberly Peirce
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Wgn
Following last week’s unofficial midseason finale, Manhattan‘s “33” deftly resets the table for the second half of the season. As the series edges closer to the fraught Trinity test that was teased in the season premiere, the main players on the Hill — both the godless and the god-fearing — are struggling with ethical dilemmas. Whether it’s squeamishness over their current actions (Jim), guilt for what they have already done (Abby), or a feverish need to wrangle in what they’ve unleashed (Frank), they’re all wrestling with demons.
First there’s Frank, who in “The World of Tomorrow,” seemed to be coping with life back at Los Alamos as well as a powerless man can, essentially playing possum until he can find an opportunity to undermine Darrow and the Gadget.

Manhattan, Season 2, Episode 5, “The World of Tomorrow”
Written by Mark Lafferty
Directed by Daniel Stern
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Wgn
How do you solve a problem like Frank Winter? If you’re Colonel Darrow, you make him your secret insurance policy for a bomb program run by a mercurial genius and an inexperienced wunderkind. If you’re the writers of Manhattan, you let him slink back onto the Hill, neatly tie up some plot threads, and yank the whole story forward six months as happens in “The World of Tomorrow,” which serves as an unofficial midseason finale.
The episode, directed by Daniel Stern, begins right where “Overlord” ended—Frank telling Charlie that the Germans don’t have a bomb—and then jumps ahead to New Year’s Eve 1944, using newly spiffed up reporter Woodrow Lorentzen as a device to explain how they got there. Using interviews to move...

When Dana Jung reviewed Tomorrowland here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote: “….The ideals that Walt Disney espoused, not only about vision and innovation, but about who we are as human beings on this planet, are alive and well in this mostly enjoyable summer action movie. I can only think that Walt would have approved!” Read all of Dana’s review Here

The world of tomorrow is already here. The second trailer for Tomorrowland reveals more about what George Clooney's character calls "a secret place… where nothing is impossible," teasing out not only Casey's (Britt Robertson) discovery of the eponymous alternate reality, but also her relationship with Clooney's Frank, a boy genius who grew up to become a bitter old man. You might never look at bathtubs the same way again. In addition to Clooney and Robertson, the movie also features Hugh Laurie, Tim McGraw and Keegan-Michael Key. Ten years ago a science fiction film soared into cinemas across the world, featuring a classic story of man vs machine and starring the talented Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. The film, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, followed the characters of Polly Perkins, an enthusiastic journalist, and her former lover Joe Sullivan, the titular Sky Captain. Together they investigate a mysterious invasion of New York City by an army of robots, in an alternative-history 1939 setting.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was a brilliant piece of cinema, drawing on a classic style to deliver an engaging and exciting story. Upon its release, it was praised by critics, who complimented the “gorgeous” visuals and deemed the film a “triumph.” Legendary film critic Roger Ebert gave Sky Captain a maximum four out of four stars, asserting “it reminded me of how I felt the first time I...

The rumor mill has churned out Angelina Jolie's Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow costar as (possibly) one of the male leads to join her in Disney's Maleficent. "The role has been offered to Jude," a source tells Life & Style. Said role would be that of Stefan, the half human, half fairy father of Aurora, a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty. The site also says Patrick Stewart may be up for/have been offered the role of King Henry, and Judi Dench and Emma Thompson possibly approached to play Flittle. This is all rumor for now of course. Elle Fanning has also been said to be in talks for the role of Aurora but that hasn't been confirmed. The live-action film explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Leading a team of visionary filmmakers...

Last April, rumours began to spread that 20th Century Fox had its eye on an ambitious new take on the Zorro legend, with post-apocalyptic version Zorro Reborn bubbling away in development. Now it’s closer to reality, with Gael Garcia Bernal anointed to take over the trademark sword-swishing duties.Since it’s set in The World Of Tomorrow, it’ll be a change from the usual Californian / Mexican setting, though the ruined world concept does suggest that a lot of desert will still be involved. Still, Bernal’s Zorro will still be a masked vigilante out for revenge.Against whom? That is still shrouded – or perhaps that should be cloaked, given the character – in mystery. What we do know is that Glenn Gers has taken a pass at the script originally written by Harker scribes Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. But though pre-vis specialist and spellcheck nemesis Rpin Suwannath was...

One of the most famous instances of replacement casting has to be the Back to the Future Eric Stoltz/Michael J. Fox switcheroo. If you're not familiar...well, you're about to be. Long story short, BttF director Robert Zemeckis made a last minute change to the casting of the time travel classic...a couple weeks into filming.
In the clip, Zemeckis explains how it went down and for the first time, you'll get a glimpse of Stoltz acting in some of the movie's classic scenes. A true gift of Blu-ray box sets!

The organizers of the 1939 New York City World’s Fair were always talking about the success of Chicago’s World’s Columbian Exhibition of 1893. It’s easy to imagine first-time author James Mauro pitching Twilight At The World Of Tomorrow in the same way, hoping to replicate the formula that made Erik Larson’s Devil In The White City a bestseller. Unfortunately, both projects proved inferior to their predecessors. Mauro mimics Larson’s style, taking a novelistic approach to the work of non-fiction. Just as Devil In The White City focused on the stories of two men, architect ...

Make it fun.” While we’re no fans of the holier-than-thou actress whose blog irritates us to no end, we can’t wait to see what kind of recipes she includes in her tome. It was chilly in Times Square Thursday morning, but there I was, standing, waiting for the sword & sorcery heroes. And after about a half-hour, they Did show up, arriving direct from the TV fantasy world into the heart of New York City via black stretch limousine. What a way to travel between mythical kingdom and civilization!
Well, if you haven’t guessed, this was a NYC press event held on “Military Island” (that isle of concrete between 44th Street and 43rd, bracketed lengthwise by Broadway and Seventh Avenue; its title derives from the U.S. Army Recruiting Station located on its south end for decades). You may have seen publicity events held there before—it’s directly in front of ABC’s Good Morning America studios, and the show regularly makes use of that Times Square turf to stage concerts, contests and other antics.

We live in Fringe times. There’s an unsettling, cryptic, complex Pattern that unites us all—and makes us increasingly obsessed with a TV show or three or even 17 of ’em. In this case, it’s Fringe, the Fox series that began as a sort of inversion of The X-Files and has evolved into something more unusual, the most watchable genre series now on network television.
Fringe’s second season began this week in a new time slot (Thursdays, 9 p.m.), opposite some heavyweight competition (CSI, Grey’S Anatomy, Supernatural). Need to catch up? The first season debuted on DVD just last week. And look soon for a two-part interview with Joshua Jackson, one of its stars, on this website.
