"No stupid mutt is going to stand between me and . . . "
oscaralbert10 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
" . . . a fortune!" 'Daffy Duck' swears at the beginning of FAST BUCK DUCK, another eerily prescient warning from our always eponymous Warner Bros. concerning America's current Troubled Times. As is often the case with Warner Bros.' crack team of prophetic prognosticators (aka, The Looney Tuners), during FAST BUCK DUCK Daffy is standing in for the USA's alleged POTUS #45 (aka, the Russian Plant). By decoding a single word of Daffy's assertion, we hear this Burnt Orange KGB Stooge affirming "No stupid Constitution is going to stand between me and a fortune!" This begs the question of whether Warner is equating the U.S. Constitution with a "stupid mutt." The cur of the hour proves easily distracted during FAST BUCK DUCK, chasing after every breaking or flying twig. Rover also turns out to be very prone to poisoning. In short, the Looney Tuners--through their depiction of Fido--delineate the U.S. Constitution for being the Racist, moldy 18th Century Suicide Pact that it is, easily manipulated by the first Daffy set of Red Commie KGB plotters that happen along.

Elevated by Daffy

Well, this was an enjoyable cartoon. Yes even with the predictable story and the odd obvious gag. It is hugely enjoyable though, it does have some nice animation with colourful backgrounds and crisply drawn characters, and the music has a lot of energy to it. I also liked the witty dialogue and the clever sight gags, and the ending was a very good surprise. Percy the Bulldog is a good character and is used well, but it is that wonderfully manic Daffy Duck who elevates this cartoon to a greater level with his rapid fire delivery and crazy ideas. Overall, enjoyable, clever and funny, with one or two problems but there are a lot of compensations. 8/10 Bethany Cox

"No stupid mutt is going to stand between me and a fortune!"

Lesser later Daffy Duck short where Daffy reads in the paper about a millionaire looking for a boon companion (an outdated term if ever there was one). Daffy wants desperately to get the job but, in order to apply, he must make it past the millionaire's unfriendly bulldog. This is not very good. The animation is sketchy with flat backgrounds the characters seem to just be added onto like Colorforms. The music is passable by Bill Lava standards, which is far from a compliment. The jokes are predictable to a fault, including the final one which I saw coming a mile away. The worst part was how the dilemma of Daffy getting past the dog is never shown to be resolved. The cartoon just runs out of 'fail' gags and cuts to Daffy having somehow made it to the millionaire. So lazy. This is not one of Daffy's best at all but I will admit it's not the worst either. The '60s was littered with terrible Looney Tunes cartoons so this one benefits from the lowered curve.

Great example of Daffy despite mostly physical jokes
bob the moo13 September 2003
Green with envy over a butler who inherits his employer's millions, Daffy responds to an advert for a companion for a millionaire. When he gets to the mansion though, he finds that the house is protected by a bulldog. But the scent of money makes Daffy more persistent than ever.

The bitter, envy filled character of Daffy Duck is one of my favourite when he is used well. He is of course good at physical humour but it is also important to bring his character out as well. Here they do a good job with both the physical stuff and Daffy's character. The actual gags are nothing new but they are made funnier by Daffy. The actual punch-line is only so-so but most of the body of the cartoon is funny.

The dog is the usual brute - a non-character, but Daffy carries it most of the way. Overall this isn't startlingly inventive but it is old material well delivered by a good character despite the odd weakness or obvious joke.
