Norma Shearer: The Boss' wife was cast in 'The Divorcee.' Norma Shearer movies on TCM: Early talkies and Best Actress Oscar Note: This Norma Shearer article is currently being revised and expanded. Please Check back later. Norma Shearer, one of the top stars in Hollywood history and known as the Queen of MGM back in the 1930s, is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month of Nov. 2015. That's the good news. The not-so-good news is that even though its parent company, Time Warner, owns most of Shearer's movies, TCM isn't airing any premieres. So, if you were expecting to check out a very young Norma Shearer in The Devil's Circus, Upstage, or After Midnight, you're out of luck. (I've seen all three; they're all worth a look.) It's a crime that, music score or no, restored print or no, TCM/Time Warner don't make available for viewing the...

St. Vincent
Written & Directed by Theodore Melfi
USA, 2014
You know you have star power when an entire theater sits through the end credits just to watch you water a potted plant. Such is our national obsession with Bill Murray. Whether it’s a raised eyebrow or an awkward pause, you’re just waiting for him to do something funny. Sadly, St. Vincent keeps you waiting for most of its running time. This watered-down Bad Santa is too busy being a benign crowd pleaser to deliver much of a kick.
Vincent (Murray) is the ball of hate that lives next door. He curses at passersby in the street, and his only friends are a cat and a pregnant exotic dancer with an outrageous Russian accent. Even his house looks like an ancient, yellowing cigarette butt. But he’s also got his soft spots. Like continuing to visit his wife in the nursing home,...

It was a foregone conclusion that should Arrested Development return in any capacity, all the major players from The Bluth Family (Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Jessica Walter, Jeffrey Tambor, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, David Cross) would all be back. But given the wonderfully warped world Mitch Hurwtiz created over three tremendous seasons, everyone wondered which supporting players would be returning as well.

-- Like the King of Pop or the Queen of Soul, Donna Summer was bestowed a title fitting of musical royalty – the Queen of Disco.
Yet unlike Michael Jackson or Aretha Franklin, it was a designation she wasn't comfortable embracing.
"I grew up on rock `n' roll," Summer once said when explaining her reluctance to claim the title.
Indeed, as disco boomed then crashed in a single decade in the 1970s, Summer, the beautiful voice and face of the genre with pulsating hits like "I Feel Love," "Love to Love You Baby" and "Last Dance," would continue to make hits incorporating the rock roots she so loved. One of her biggest hits, "She Works Hard for the Money," came in the early 1980s and relied on a smoldering guitar solo as well as Summer's booming voice.
Yet it was with her disco anthems that she would have the most impact in music,...

Donna Summer, the powerhouse singer known as the "Queen of Disco," died on Thursday (May 17) in Florida after a battle with cancer, according to The Associated Press.
The five-time Grammy winner who set dance floors ablaze in the 1970s with such anthems as "Last Dance," "Hot Stuff" and her most iconic hit, "I Feel Love," was 63 years old. In a genre that was filled with many one-hit wonders and fly-by-night studio acts that were unable to keep the disco inferno stoked after scoring hits, Summer was a lifer, consistently charting even after the dance craze faded in the late 1970s.

Screenwriter Frederica Sagor Dead at 111: Wrote Movies for Norma Shearer (photo), Clara Bow, Louise Brooks Now, whether Frederica Sagor's Hollywood Babylon-like tales bear any resemblance to what actually happened at studio parties and private soirees, I can't tell. But on the professional side, one problem with the information found in The Shocking Miss Pilgrim is that studios invariably used numerous writers, whether male or female, in their projects. Usually, in those pre-Writers Guild days, only two or three contributors received final credit, not because of the uncredited writer's gender but in large part because the final product oftentimes had little — if anything — in common with the original source. While doing research for my Ramon Novarro biography, I went through various drafts, written by various hands, of his movies. A Certain Young Man, for instance, went through so many changes (including director, cast, and title), that the final film...

Maniac Cop
Stars: Bruce Campbell, Tom Atkins, Laurene Landon, Robert Z’dar, Richard Roundtree | Written by Larry Cohen | Directed by William Lustig
Featuring one of the best taglines ever: “You have the right to remain silent… Forever”, one of my all-time favourite horror franchises finally makes it Blu-ray debut with this release of the fantastic Maniac Cop from Arrow Video. Written and directed by one of Hollywood’s greatest filmmaking teams – WIlliam Lustig and Larry Cohen – who between them have made some of the best cult movies out there, including The Stuff, Q: The WInged Serpent, It’s Alive, Maniac, Uncle Sam and Relentless… The duos peak for me was the Maniac Cop series (admittedly the third film isn’t the greatest movie out there) which balance action and horror to perfection in a tale that mixes both horror and police procedural genres, with a villain who really deserves to...
