Review of Manimal

Manimal (1983)
6/10
pure 80's schlock
11 April 2021
From Africa to Tibet, Jonathan Chase follows his father's footsteps to become an animal shapeshifter. He's a dashing, crime fighting, international man of mystery with his war buddy Tyrone C. Earl. He takes on the form of the panther while tracking down gunrunners. NYPD detective Brooke McKenzie happens upon the panther which eventually leads to partnering up with Chase.

This is 80's action schlock. The plots are unreal simplistic action episodes. The group is fine although maybe they could add one more member. The surprising aspect is that the transformation don't suck. There is some fun makeup special effects and they keep reusing them. It has a bit of comedy although they could do more. That's where another member could come in handy. I also wonder if the father was set to come in as a villain. It also needs to make his shapeshifting into something more real and personal. At the end of the day, the title suggests something much worst but it's still plenty camp.
