Howard Burton eschews flashy presentation for a copiously detailed study of the artist’s life and times
Here is a mammoth 148-minute documentary about the Renaissance painter Raphael, which in its sheer length and detail is an impressive achievement in itself by its writer and director Howard Burton, whose calm, scholastic tone is a continuous presence on the voiceover. Burton, a theoretical physicist, co-founded the Ideas Roadshow platform with his wife Irena in 2012, and this is their first narrative film: a detailed disquisition on Raphael’s life and times that, while in some ways resembling an extended evening-class lecture with nifty PowerPoint graphics, is clear and informative enough to hold the attention – though perhaps you might need a break every now and then.

Canadian director Louise Archambault’s latest work, Irena’s Vow has a fascinating real-life story at the center of it. It is about a young Polish woman going out of her way to save the lives of as many as twelve Jews during the Second World War. But the execution of it is extremely basic. Naturally, the result is another war-drama movie that is decent at best and completely rests on the shoulders of its lead performer, Sophie Nelisse. Well, I have to say Nelisse makes it work by being truly fantastic in the role of Irena. While Irena’s Vow fails to be anything other than a biopic filled with tropes, it does throw you a surprise by casting Dougray Scott as a Nazi officer. I have an affinity for the actor thanks to his villainous turn in Mission: Impossible 2, which was released almost a quarter century ago; since then,...

Warning: contains finale spoilers for Constellation.
Space messes you up. That’s the conclusion reached by former 1960s cosmonaut Irena Lysenko in Apple TV+ sci-fi Constellation. Irena knows space’s secret, which is that sometimes the astronauts that come back down from missions aren’t the same ones who went up there.
Every so often, spooky space physics pull a switcheroo and swap people from their own universe to a mirror versions with slight but unignorable differences such as the colour of the family car, to whether they’re alive or dead.
Before we get into Bud and Henry’s complicated finale business, a bit of context is needed:
The Mirror Universes
In Constellation, there are two mirrored universes plus a crossover space in which parts of both overlap, enabling people in Universe A to get the odd, destabilising glimpse of what’s going on in Universe B. Think Stranger Things’ the Upside Down,...

Irena Lysenko, the topmost authoritative figure of Roscosmos, plays a big hand in deciding people’s fate in Apple TV’s Constellation. A former cosmonaut herself, Irena is a woman who is decisive and fearless every step of the way. Burdened with the responsibility to make sure all the crew members of the Iss are safe, Irena goes on to prove how she reached the top of the hierarchy.
Spoilers Ahead
Is Irena The “Valya?”
The corpse Jo saw, which hit the Iss, is the same ghost that appears in Alice’s nightmares. The mystery behind the identity of Valya had Alice locked inside her cupboard for months. Jo knew that what she saw wasn’t a hallucination, but she had to refuse the claim due to the pressure surrounding her. Irena’s persistence in proving that Jo didn’t see a dead cosmonaut only proves that Irena doesn’t...

After taking viewers through the mysterious, captivating, thrilling, and occasionally emotional journey of Swedish astronaut Jo Ericsson—a journey that transcended realities to uncover some hidden corners of space exploration—Apple TV+’s Constellation brings an end to its first season in the most unexpected way. Previously, while being stranded in an alternate reality, Jo fled to their family cabin in Vindelälven, taking alternate Alice and the Cal device with her. On the other hand, Jo’s daughter, Alice from prime reality, decided to visit Vindelälven with her father, Magnus, as well, and through unique distortions in the spatial continuum, she is briefly reunited with her mother on the other side. Alternate Alice learns about another version of herself as the two Alice communicate with each other, discussing the predicament of a reality-displaced Jo.
However, while saving alternate Alice, Jo is separated from her daughter and gets apprehended by the...

"Search everywhere! Everywhere! Do you hear me?" Quiver Distr. has debuted the official US trailer a true story WWII thriller titled Irena's Vow, the latest film from Canadian filmmaker Louise Archambault. This originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall, then went on to play at the Cinéfest Sudbury Film Festival and also the Woodstock Film Festival. Discover the incredible true story of Irena Gut Opdyke, a Polish nurse who heroically saved Jewish lives during WWII. An inspiring story that needs to be seen to be believed. The film follows the Polish nurse Irene Gut Opdyke who was awarded the "Righteous Among the Nations" medal for her remarkable courage. After being promoted to housekeeper in a Nazi commandant's house, she decides to shelter 12 Jewish people working there in the basement for years. This stars Sophie Nélisse as Irena, Dougray Scott, Andrzej Seweryn, and Maciek Nawrocki. Yet another harrowing story of survival during the Holocaust.

Exclusive: “This is a beautiful piece of art that I had no idea was going to resonate so deeply with me,” Regina King declared at last night’s overflowing tastemaker screening of Ava DuVernay’s Origin. “It’s a film about connectivity,” the Oscar winner added to the heavy hitter crowd. “I believe this is a film that will be studied in Anthropology classes for years and years to come.”
“Stunning, thank you,” King even more bluntly said of Origin to When They See Us vets DuVernay and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and wide applause from influential onlookers.
In a rare public appearance, the acclaimed actor and director took center stage with DuVernay and Ellis-Taylor Thursday to praise and delve into the film based on Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s 2020 bestseller Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents. Believe it or not, the dreadful 2004 Catwoman was not the movie Warner Bros. set out to make. After Michelle Pfeiffer‘s stunning turn as Selina Kyle in Batman Returns, nobody initially thought, “Yes, but what if we get some terrible French commercial director to shoot a story about a different cat lady fighting a budget-Emma Frost like it’s a perfume ad?” In the truth, the Catwoman project went through many iterations, not landing on the laughable mess that stalled the career of Halle Berry (who’s actually quite good in Catwoman) until the early 2000s.
Recently, Batman Returns screenwriter Daniel Waters shared some ideas about the original treatment for a Catwoman spinoff that director Tim Burton himself wanted to make after his Batman sequel. As revealed to IndieWire after a screening in Los Angeles in December, Burton had no intention of continuing the superhero route for his Catwoman film.

Streaming services shake up their catalogs every month, but few rounds of TV and film musical chairs tend to be as rewarding as the ones that take place each fall. That's because we're entering spooky season, a time in which horror fans attempt to tackle ambitious watchlists and scaredy-cats dip their toes into the horror waters in the spirit of all things autumnal.
In keeping with this tradition, a large chunk of the movies making their way to Max (formerly HBO Max) this September are, if not outright scary, at least vaguely within the boundaries of the horror genre. Sure, there are some comedy classics ("Friday"), historical epics ("Gangs of New York"), and brand new docuseries ("Megan Thee Stallion vs. Tory Lanez: Five Shots") worth tuning into, but for my money, nearly all the best Max picks next month fall under the Halloween watchlist-adjacent umbrella.

The Machine is loud, gross, obnoxious and overbearing. It’s also disarming, quick-witted, fast moving and becomes increasingly funny as it ends up in, of all places, Russia for its payoff scenes.
Presided over, if that is the right term, by the irrepressible Bert Kreischer, the big-gutted comedian who goes by the name The Machine and prefers to appear without a shirt on whenever possible, has landed his first big feature film at age 50 and continues the same comic shtick he’s been doing for years. Lo and behold, it’s still pretty funny stuff. This is a big picture for a big guy, and Kreischer is so persistent, and persistently off the wall, that it’s finally far easier to enjoy the party than to carp and resist.
Kreischer makes a point of performing with his shirt off when at all possible, something that becomes a tad strange in...
