Auckland, Jan 5 (Ians) No.1 seed Coco Gauff defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Asb Classic, here on Thursday.
After lengthy rain delays eventually forced the entirety of this match indoors and it was World No.7 Gauff who prevailed in 1 hour and 23 minutes to reach her first Auckland quarterfinal in her second appearance at the tournament.
Gauff built a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but the 2022 Roland Garros finalist failed to serve out the set at 5-3, allowing Kenin back on serve. However, Gauff quickly reclaimed her advantage, breaking her opponent for the one-set lead after a Kenin forehand flew long on set point.
In the second set, there were no service breaks through 5-4. In that game, though, Kenin failed to convert three game points, and Gauff earned a match point by forcing an error with her strong backhand. Gauff converted...

The 2022 US Open is officially underway, and so far, it's been a star-studded event, with tons of celebrities heading to Flushing, Queens - especially back on night one to watch Serena Williams begin playing in what she's said was her last professional tennis tournament. On Aug. 29, Williams faced off against Danka Kovinić in the first round and beat her in straight sets. Of course, Williams's husband Alexis Ohanian and daughter Olympia were on hand for the special night, but they weren't the only big-name attendees in the stands. Other celebs like Trevor Noah, Naomi Watts, Ben Simmons, Bella Hadid, Hugh Jackman, Anthony Anderson, Ashley Graham, Queen Latifah, and more have all attended the Grand Slam tournament over its ongoing two-week run.
On Aug. 31, Williams continued her victory streak when she deftly defeated Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, the No. 2 seed, in the second round of the tournament. Unfortunately, Williams fell in the third round on Sept.

Serena Williams dropped her third-round U.S. Open match to Ajla Tomljanović, likely bringing an end to her storied career.
Tomljanović needed a little over three hours Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York to defeat Williams 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. Williams, widely considered the greatest player to ever play the sport, roared back in the second set following a huge momentum swing. But Williams struggled early in the third set, and it seemed all but inevitable that her sensational comeback would fall short.
Following the defeat, Williams was asked what everyone in the world wants to know: is this the end?
“I mean, I’m literally playing my way into this and getting better,” she said. “I don’t think so but you never know. I don’t know.”
Tomljanović paid her respects to Williams following her impressive win.
What a ride it’s been.

Serena Williams wasn’t expected to win the Grand Slam title at the 2022 U.S. Open. Far from it. She turns 41 later this month, and recently announced her plans to retire from tennis to focus on her family and business pursuits. She’s been dogged by an injury that took her out of competition for a year before her comeback at Wimbledon in June, where she lost in the first round. Some fans even expressed surprise that she returned to play again, with many wishing the Goat could just retire...

There’s a reason they call her the Greatest Of All Time.
During Serena Williams‘ post-game interview following her U.S. Open win against Estonian tennis player, Anett Kontaveit, Wednesday night, she was asked if she was surprised with herself with her “level” of play at the moment.
And Williams, who had just come off a first-round win Tuesday, had the best response.
“What?” Williams asked.
“Are you surprised at yourself with your level?” the reporter asked, repeating her initial question.
Williams simply smirked and chuckled, prompting the reporter to realize that she may have already known the answer to that question.
“No, I know,” the reporter replied

Rebel Wilson is giving love-all a whole new meaning. On Aug. 29, the Pitch Perfect alum enjoyed an evening out with her girlfriend, clothing brand founder Ramona Agruma, at the 2022 U.S. Open. Sitting in the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, the couple cheered on Serena Williams—who announced her plans to retire from tennis earlier this month—as the athlete took on Danka Kovinić in two winning sets. For their date night, Rebel tapped into the Barbiecore trend with a bright pink Courrèges dress and a matching cropped jacket, while Ramona was equally dressed to impress in a black frock featuring a white lacy collar and pearl buttons. New York, Aug 30 (Ians) American tennis star Serena Williams, four weeks shy of her 41st birthday and playing in her last career event, overcame Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3 to secure a place in the second round of the US Open on Tuesday (Ist).
Serena will play No.2 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia on Wednesday.
The winner of 23 singles titles at majors, Serena has now won 107 matches in New York, and 102 of them have come in Arthur Ashe Stadium, according to wtatennis.com
Williams began tentatively, losing three of the first four points. But she smashed two aces to get even and took the opening game when a Kovinic forehand found the net. The legendary player moved remarkably compared to her stints in Toronto and Cincinnati earlier this month.
“I always feel so comfortable on this court,” she said. “When I step on the court I just want to do the best I can.

Earlier this month, Serena Williams announced in her cover story essay appearing in the September issue of Vogue that she’s eyeing retirement. She didn’t give a deadline for her retirement but implied strongly it’ll likely be soon. Speculation is that the current U.S. Open will be Williams’ final tournament as a professional tennis player.
OMonday Williams played her Round 1 match of the Open against Danka Kovinic. Had she lost to the 27 year old, it could have been Williams’ last game. She went on to win the match, but the U.S. Open organizers were prepared anyway just in case. So it was after the match ended that Williams received a special ceremony in which first Gayle King then fellow tennis legend Billie Jean King paid tribute to her.

New York, Aug 27 (Ians) Boyzone were top of the charts and more than a quarter of the women’s top 100 had not been born when Serena Williams made her US Open debut 24 years ago.
Already a superstar in the making at 16, Williams has been the talk of tennis ever since and will be celebrated as such at Flushing Meadows as she marks the end of one of the great sporting careers, reports Dpa.
A few weeks short of her 41st birthday and keen to focus on trying to have a second child, Williams has decided, reluctantly, that now is the time to hang up her racquet.
While she has played sparingly over the last few years and women like Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek have staked their claim at the top of the game, Williams remained the alpha female of the tour and her retirement will leave an inescapable hole.

New York, Aug 26 (Ians) In what is set to be her final tournament, 23-time major champion Serena Williams will face Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in the first round of the U.S Open, the organisers announced on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Williams announced her impending retirement after the U.S Open. A champion in New York six times, she will face No.80 Kovinic for the first time.
The 27-year-old Montenegrin reached a career-high ranking of No.46 in 2016 and became the first woman from her country to win a Wta Tour title last year at Charleston.
In January, Kovinic broke new ground for Montenegro at the Australian Open after defeating Emma Raducanu to become the first woman from her country to reach the third round of a Slam.
The winner of that opener will face either No.2 Anett Kontaveit or Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian.
