The 2020 Latin Grammys opened with a splashy, star-studded homage to the salsa legend Héctor Lavoe. While a group of music luminaries, including the singer Victor Manuelle, belted out the lyrics to “El Cantante,” the 28-year-old Puerto Rican artist Rauw Alejandro sauntered onstage holding hands with reggaeton matriarch Ivy Queen. Wearing his signature braids and a burgundy suit adorned with gleaming chains, the smooth newcomer seemed to announce that although he’s known for R&b and reggaeton, he could easily glide in next to seasoned veterans and perform salsa. Throughout the whole night,...

Times Square in New York will be closed to the public Thursday night for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the first time there won’t be a crowd at the iconic locale on December 31 since the first ball drop in 1907 (the first celebration at One Times Square in Manhattan was in 1904). But in a year in which the entertainment industry has had to adjust to a virtual stage, the show will go on and the ball will still drop at midnight.
Official Times Square New Year’s Eve co-organizers Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment will present a six-hour commercial-free webcast (closed to the public and following New York state health protocols), with Jonathan Bennett returning as host. It will include performances from Andra Day, Gloria Gaynor, the Uso Show Troupe and The Waffle Crew. Other New York-based performers on the night among the various broadcast and cable networks, which...

Since the start of the pandemic, awards shows have attempted to strike a balance between necessary Covid-19 precautions and the awkwardness of virtual formats. On Thursday night, the Latin Recording Academy tried to forge its own path with its “reimagined telecast,” which bounced between a live show with limited guests in Miami and taped performances that took place around the world.

Best New Artist nominee Anuel AA closed out the Latin Grammy Awards with a performance of deep cuts from his latest album Emmanuel.
In a sea of laser lights, the Puerto Rican superstar upped the dramatics with a haunting performance of his ballad “Estrés Postraumático.” He then headed into the future with his squad of Speed Racer-like female dancers for the tropical “El Manuel.” Instead of retreading past hits like “China,” Anuel put on a show with some fresher material.
