Harley Quinn stars Lake Bell and James Adomian are costarring again in HBO Max’s Kite Man: Hell Yeah! spinoff and they have one special wish for their characters. No, not for Poison Ivy and Bane, but for the other characters they also voice in the show.
DC’s Kite Man: Hell Yeah! / Max
Oftentimes, actors lend their vocals to more than one character when needed, but in this particular setting, Bell and Adomian want to bring the spotlight to two side characters. The catch is that they do it in the raunchiest way.

Annecy, France — Michael Ouweleen, president of Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim, a major force behind the rise of adult animation, has signalled at Annecy the company’s intention to ramp up its presence in Europe and international markets at large.
“We very much want to see Adult Swim originals coming from anywhere in the world,” Ouweleen told Variety at the French festival.
The stars are aligning for the overseas drive.
In the U.S., Adult Swim is on a roll. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Adult Swim saw greater primetime growth among 18-49s than any other major cable network. It bowed the top three new animated series on cable in 2023: “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal,” “My Adventures with Superman” and “Royal Crackers,” Cartoon Brew noted.
As Ouweleen enthused at an Adult Animation Annecy panel on Friday, he added, “the distribution of adult animation just this week got better.” On June 11, Max,...

Adult Swim is making my day at the Annecy Animation Festival by announcing two new animation projects with adaptations of Anthony Bourdain‘s Get Jiro! and Jillian Tamaki’s SuperMutant Magic Academy. I’m a massive fan of both books, especially SuperMutant Magic Academy. This news adds to several exciting announcements from Annecy, including green lights for Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Moon Girl’s Lab, the new Regular Show and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends series, and more.
The adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel, Get Jiro!, hails from Briand Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, co-writers of Sharper and producers of NBC’s Superstore. Published by Vertigo, Get Jiro! has the following synopsis:
In a not-too-distant future of food-obsessed L.A., where master chefs rule the town like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurant, Jiro, a renegade and ruthless sushi...

Annecy, France — During today’s Warner Bros. Discovery Adult Animation Showcase at the Annecy Animation Festival, the company unveiled two new series, “Get Jiro!,” based on the late Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novels of the same name, and “Super Mutant Magic Academy” from “Regular Show” creator J.G. Quintel and Jillian Tamaki.
Created by Briand Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, co-writers of “Sharper” and producers of NBC’s “Superstore,” “Get Jiro!” unspools in a near-future version of Los Angeles and follows the mysterious sushi chef Jiro in a brutal environment where hungry patrons will kill to get a table at the most prestigious restaurants.
Bourdain “was a big comic fan, a big anime fan. It was a huge anime fan. ‘Mind Game’ from Studio 4ºC was his favorite movie. When I got to Warner Brothers Animation, ‘Get Jiro’ was one of the first things that I optioned from DC,” said added Peter Girardi,...

Annecy, France — Five-time Emmy Award winner Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of “Samurai Jack” and “Primal,” is developing “Heist Safari,” a 10-episode comedic robbery that will have the feel of a musical, Tartakovsky said.
The robbers are three brother frogs, control freak James, neurotic Issac, and little George, who thinks he’s brilliant but is actually totally not. Estranged, they meet up at their father’s funeral, where they are informed that they will only inherit his fortune if they pull off a bank heist, stealing the contents of a bank’s vault numbered 88.
Trouble comes when all three cut side deals for help in the form of a Japanese yakuza tiger, a Russian mafia hippo and an Italian gorilla mobster. The police are wildebeests.
Every episode is executed as just one shot and they will not be told in chronological order. The whole has an Edm score, said Tartakovsky.

Max is turning off the heat on Julia.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled its Julia Child-inspired series Julia following a two-season run. The news comes after the second season wrapped its run Dec. 21 and amid an era of belt tightening across the television landscape, with Julia joining Our Flag Means Death in being axed at the streamer this week alone. Both seasons of Julia will continue to be available to stream on Max.
From creator Daniel Goldfarb and showrunner Chris Keyser, Sarah Lancashire starred as Child opposite David Hyde Pierce. Max did not own the show and instead paid a licensing fee to producers Lionsgate Television, which is in the midst of spinning off from premium cable network Starz.
“We are so honored to have partnered with Chris Keyser, Daniel Goldfarb and their masterful creative team and dynamic cast, led by Sarah Lancashire, as they cooked up Julia.

Fans of the beloved pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death were dealt a heavy blow on January 9. Max has canceled Our Flag Means Death after just two seasons. The series’ creators had said they envisioned just three seasons total for the Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby-led rom-com, and recent social media posts from the cast and crew had fans hopeful that a Season 3 renewal was on the way. Now, “devastated” and “heartbroken” fans are reacting to the shocking cancellation online. Ofmd creator David Jenkins announced the cancellation himself on Instagram. “The bad news is clear. Our Flag won’t be returning for a third season,” Jenkins’ statement reads. “We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee, and David Ruby have been incredible champions of this show.

It’s time to wing it — Max has released the first official teaser for its animated “Harley Quinn” spin-off “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!,” which is set to debut in 2024.
“Kite Man and Golden Glider take their relationship to the next level by opening a bar in the shadow of Lex Luthor’s Legion of Doom. Matt Oberg will reprise his role of Kite Man that originally debuted in “Harley Quinn” while Stephanie Hsu will star alongside him as Golden Glider. Rounding out the cast of “Kite Man” is James Adomian as Bane, Natasia Demetriou as Malice, Janelle James as Queen of Fables, Jonathan Banks as Noonan, Keith David as Darkseid,...

Good news and bad news, "The Sex Lives of College Girls" fans: the hit HBO Max series is returning for a third season! But, sadly, one of the fan favorites is leaving the show. On July 9, Variety reported that Reneé Rapp, who plays Leighton, is downsizing to a recurring role in season three before she'll ultimately depart. Rapp then confirmed the news shortly after, writing in a statement on social media, "College girls moved me out to L.A. and introduced me to some of my favorite people. Two and a half years later - it's given me y'all and this community."
She continued, "Thank u Mindy, Justin and everyone at Max for believing in me. A lot of queer work gets belittled - but playing Leighton has changed my life. I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her. I hope she gave y'all a little bit of that too.

Yes, that means the final episode is available to stream.
While the decision to end the show comes right before the series finale's debut, it seems the endgame had been planned for quite a while.
"It is bittersweet to say goodbye to the Dubek family after three seasons, but we always knew, both creatively and personally, that this was where we wanted to end their stories," co-showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider shared.
"And because we are quite literally out of ways to humiliate Drew Tarver, so what's the point?"

The Other Two, the comedy series starring Heléne Yorke, Drew Tarver and Molly Shannon, is coming to a close with its third season on Max.
However, rather than being canceled, the decision was made by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, co-creators of the buzzy comedy, who said that they have run out of ways to “humiliate” Tarver.

“The Other Two” will not return for a fourth season, as series creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider announce that they “always knew” Thursday’s Season 3 finale is “where we wanted to end” the stories of Brooke and Cary Dubek.
Debuting on Comedy Central in 2019 before moving to HBO Max (and now Max), the series offered a scathing satire of Hollywood and the corruptive nature of fame. It starred Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver as disillusioned millennial siblings Brooke and Cary, who attempt to make it in New York City after their teenage brother becomes a Justin Bieber-esque pop star and their mother a daytime TV host. In Season 3, Cary, an actor, finally works his way up to C-list celebrity status, while Brooke, after talent managing her famous family members, decides to leave the industry to “do good.”

The Other Two, the cult Max comedy about the inner workings of Hollywood, will conclude June 29 with its season three finale. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the ending comes following multiple staff complaints about creators and showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider over the course of the production, though several insiders say that there is no causal connection between the complaints and the decision to end with season three.
Multiple sources involved with The Other Two confirm Kelly and Schneider were the subject of complaints to human resources over behavior on set and in the writers room. These include allegations that Kelly verbally abused writers and overworked crew and claims that Schneider enabled his behavior.
According to sources, the production conducted a formal investigation into the behavior, during which Kelly and Schneider were not permitted on set for a period. Kelly and Schneider were formally cleared of wrongdoing and allowed to return.

Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley got her own “adult animated series” over on Max earlier this year, and Max has confirmed this week that “Velma” Season 2 is on the way.

Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows the industry is “being much more bullish” about adult animation than when his popular programming block premiered in 2001 on Cartoon Network. It’s a noteworthy shift for Western audiences, who’ve spent decades watching mostly family sitcoms dominate the medium.
“Without people making animation synonymous with kids only, I don’t even know if we’d ever use the term ‘adult animation.’ It’s a term that’s in negation of a perception. Animation is not one thing. It’s a production method that allows for a lot of things that other production methods don’t allow for,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s something secret about animation that allows it to last longer, travel more and mean more to people — for them to wear it as their identity a little easier — than other production methods.”

Some 70 roles have been made redundant as Casey Bloys implements Wbd-led restructure
Warner Bros Discovery has closed HBO Max’s international originals team, which was behind deals such as buying US rights to It’s A Sin, as part of 70 layoffs under chief content officer Casey Bloys.
Bloys, who leads on content for HBO and HBO Max, is overseeing a 14 cut to his programming operations, with senior vice-president of international originals Jeniffer Kim’s team one of the worst hit.

HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys sent a memo to employees this afternoon, explaining the decision by Warner Bros. Discovery to layoff 70 employees, or 14 of his workforce, as the company restructures. The move, announced the morning, comes as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one streamer — with the decision made to reduce redundancies in unscripted programming. But a changing business model also led to cuts in scripted children’s and family fare, casting, international and acquisitions.
“Unfortunately, the environment in which we operate is changing rapidly, and it is up to us to continue to refine our model to chart a course for long term success,” he wrote in the memo. “As you heard from David Zaslav during our last earnings call, producing top-tier HBO/Max scripted content is crucial to Wbd’s future. Part of this process involves an honest assessment of what we need moving forward.

At the end of a day that saw about 70 (14) staffers in his divisions getting laid off, Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO & HBO Max, just sent an email to his team about the cuts as well as his new (old) senior HBO/Max scripted executive team of Amy Gravitt, Francesca Orsi and Sarah Aubrey, which includes new responsibilities for Gravitt and Aubrey.
In the memo (read it in full below), Bloys lays out the responsibilities for his top executives on the scripted and documentary side who are staying on and also highlights the accomplishments of the top executives who are leaving as a result of the layoffs: Jennifer O’Connell, Jennifer Kim; Michael Quigley and Linda Lowy.
“Although I am confident these structural changes will allow us to sustain a thriving business model, these decisions have been extremely painful to make,” Bloys wrote. “We operate in an environment where we...

Warner Bros. Discovery is laying off 70 HBO Max employees ahead of the company’s planned merger of its two main streaming services next year, eliminating four major departments and exiting several EVPs and SVPs.
Among the departments being eliminated: HBO Max Originals Nonfiction and Live Action, International Originals, Casting and Content Acquisitions.
This amounts to roughly 14 of staff under head content officer Casey Bloys being let go prior to HBO Max and Discovery+ being combined into a single service set to launch in the United States next summer. The layoffs are part of Wbd CEO David Zaslav’s continue cost-cutting efforts as the company seeks out 3 billion in synergies and looks to pay down debt that has ballooned to more than 50 billion.
Bloys sent a personal memo to staff later Monday that was obtained by TheWrap.

After weeks of speculation, Warner Bros. Discovery is ready to reveal some of the changes that will take place at HBO Max, in advance of next year’s anticipated combination of the HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services. And as expected, HBO Max will downsize its reality programming department.
As part of the changes, around 14 of the staff under the oversight of HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys will be reduced. That translates to around 70 employees (from across HBO and HBO Max) who will be laid off in this restructure.
As part of the changes, Sarah Aubrey, the current head of original content at HBO Max, will now focus her oversight on the Max Originals drama slate. In addition, she will now also work in international programming strategy alongside the Warner Bros. Discovery International team, led by Gerhard Zeiler. Joey Chavez, exec VP Programming, will continue to report...

The dreaded post-merger Warner Bros Discovery layoffs have reached the programming operation overseen by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys.
Overall, 14 of staff — about 70 people — are being laid off Monday, the vast majority of them on the Max side. That includes in Max Non-Fiction Originals, International, Acquisitions, Casting and previously reported Live-Action Family Originals, which are all being either scaled back significantly or essentially eliminated, leading to the departure of the bulk of the the staffs, led by Jennifer O’Connell EVP, Non-Fiction & Live-Action Family Originals for HBO Max; Jennifer Kim, SVP, International Originals for HBO Max; Michael Quigley, EVP of Content Acquisitions at HBO Max; and Linda Lowy, EVP Casting for WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, TNT, TBS and truTV.
I hear the layoffs are being done via video conferences this morning. The cuts are part of Wbd leadership’s pledge to find at least 3 billion in savings.
