Exclusive: The story of a woman who was accused of murder after entering into a suicide pact with her terminally ill husband is being adapted for the screen in the UK.
Corestar Media has acquired the dramatic rights to Mavis Eccleston’s story, who took the agonizing decision to end her life alongside husband of six decades Dennis, who was in terrible pain from cancer.
The feature, Goodnight Darling, will follow how the 79-year-old Mavis was arrested and tried for murder, only to be unanimously found not guilty, and then began a campaign with her family to change the law to allow people to take the choice of assisted dying.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel author Deborah Moggach, whose mother served time in prison in an assisted dying case, has written a script. The story could be made as a film or a TV series, said a rep for UK drama indie Corestar.

James Gunn hates meaningless cameo appearances in superhero films. The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director has spoken out against what he's dubbed "cameo porn" and insisted too many blockbusters are adding in small roles for characters that don't need to be there - and he's insisted his new movie 'Superman: Legacy' won't follow suit.In a post on Threads, he explained: "It’s Not a large film - I mean, not in terms of cast. It’s normal for single protagonist films to have other characters - much more unusual for them not to."I call that [meaningless cameo appearances] ‘Cameo Porn’ and it has been one of the worst elements of recent superhero films. If a character is in film, they have to have a reason to be there story-wise."I don’t mind actual cameos - if it’s a glimpse or a moment, an Easter egg.

James Gunn took a moment to confirm that Nicholas Hoult will, in fact, be playing Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy and gave a bit of insight into what fans can expect from his take on the villain.
The co-chair and co-ceo of DC Studios posted a photo of him and Hoult on Threads and shared that the two had dinner to celebrate the official casting.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Gunn wrote. “We went out to dinner last night to celebrate & discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. ‘But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?’ Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain.”

The Man of Steel has found his arch-nemesis. Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in the upcoming James Gunn film “Superman: Legacy,” according to a report from Deadline.
IndieWire has reached out to representatives of Warner Bros. for comment.
According to Deadline, the casting process for Luthor began after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended on November 9, with casting on pause since the strike began in July. However, Hoult was in the mix for “Superman: Legacy” beforehand; the actor previously auditioned for the lead role of Clark Kent during early screen tests for the film. Hoult was one of three actors to make the final round of tests along with Tom Brittney and David Corenswet, who was ultimately cast as the lead this past June, along with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” lead Rachel Brosnahan as Superman’s love interest Lois Lane.

For the last five years, January has meant one thing to the cast of Ghosts: trundling over to West Horsley Place in Surrey to film the next series. Not in 2024. The BBC comedy’s final episode is set to air this Christmas, and after that, what do this in-demand lot have planned?
Plenty, it turns out. They’ll be popping up on screen and stage, as well as writing new projects both individually and together. As Larry Rickard told Den of Geek, “It’s not like we’re [famously fractious 70s soft rock band] The Eagles and we hate each other!” A Ghosts reunion down the line “wouldn’t be a mountain to climb,” says Rickard. “It’s a door that’s shut but obviously, doors have hinges and handles.”
And ghosts can just walk through them, we venture? “Well exactly, they haven’t even got to go to the effort of opening them.”

James Gunn is making a Superman movie with a younger actor than former Man of Steel Henry Cavill, but that doesn’t mean he’s making a “young Superman movie” per se.
The writer, director and DC Studios’ co-chief took to Threads to clarify something that’s been an assumption about Superman: Legacy and the reason he shifted leads from Cavill (who is 40) to David Corenswet (who is 30).
A fan asked Gunn if his “young Superman movie” is set in the past. Gunn replied: “I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie, just a Superman movie!”
To be fair, part of the reason fans assumed his story was going to be a youthful portrayal was a comment from Gunn himself about why he recast the role. He wrote on Twitter in December: “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life,...

We all know Grantchester is an ensemble drama, but Season 8’s final two hours made us feel it. Yes, there were big questions to answer for the leading men: Would Will end his guilt-and-pill-fueled bender in time to see Bonnie give birth? Would Geordie retire? But we also got enough growth from Larry to suddenly ‘ship him and Miss Scott (let’s call them Scarry!), touching scenes between Leonard and Jack, and Leonard and Daniel, and multiple reminders that the actresses playing Cathy and Mrs. C have incredible comedic timing.

We have good news and bad news for fans of PBS’s Grantchester. The good news is that the British mystery drama has been renewed for a ninth season. The bad news is that the upcoming season will be the last for Tom Brittney, who has played crime-solving vicar Will Davenport since season 4.

It’s only been a few weeks since Grantchester Season 8 premiered on PBS, but the show’s cast is already looking ahead to season 9. Now that Endeavour has ended for good, there are a few obvious places for fans to go in search of more of the crossword-solving, bitter-drinking, classics-quoting Oxford detective. The first are Colin Dexter’s novels, which established the character. The second is the original ITV show Inspector Morse based on those books, which starred John Thaw in the title role for 33 feature-length episodes between 1987 and 2000. Thirdly, there’s sequel Lewis, which continued the story of Morse’s underling Robbie through his own inspector days, and which also ran for 33 episodes, up until 2015. Both are currently streamable on BritBox in the UK and US, as well as Itvx, and PBS Masterpiece.
The likelihood though, is that those three will have already been exhausted by Morse devotees, so here are some recommendations of detective shows with a touch of Endeavour about them, whether it’s a melancholic lead with a brilliant mind,...

He’s newly married, with a baby on the way and a stepson who adores him. But Tom Brittney’s crime-solving vicar, Will Davenport, goes down his darkest path yet on the 1960-set eighth season of Grantchester, PBS’s unassuming and irresistible British mystery-drama (Season 8 premieres July 9). After inadvertently causing a devastating accident (no spoilers here!), Will cannot absolve himself of his overwhelming sense of guilt and sinks into isolation. “I think because of Will’s inherent nature and his upbringing — being made to feel everything was his fault — he’s always been a very self-flagellating person,” Brittney says. “So even though it’s not his fault, it doesn’t trump the voices in his head telling him he’s a bad person.” That isolation is magnified when his loving, very pregnant wife, Bonnie (Charlotte Ritchie), whom he wed unexpectedly in last year’s finale, temporarily leaves Grantchester to help out her parents.

According to Gunn, the film follows Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman as he learns to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, thanks to parents Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Corenswet will star alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who takes on the role of Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.

A new Man of Steel has arrived. After an extensive search for the actor to fill the role of Superman in writer/director James Gunn’s upcoming DC reboot “Superman: Legacy,” 29-year-old American actor David Corenswet has won the coveted role. He’ll star alongside Emmy-winning “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” actress Rachel Brosnahan in the new Warner Bros. film, which is slated for release in 2025 and will officially kick off Gunn’s rebooted (and interconnected) DC universe.
Much like the actors who donned the tights before him, Corenswet isn’t a complete unknown but also isn’t (yet) an incredibly recognizable performer. Consider this your primer to get to know the new Man of Steel.

Deadline revealed today that David Corenswet has been cast as D.C. films’ new Superman in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. But beyond the requisite piercing blue eyes, exactly who is the 29-year-old Corenswet?
Who Is He?
Corenswet graduated from Julliard in 2018 and two years later landed a role on House of Cards. He then starred in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series The Politician, which ran from 2019–2020, and Hollywood (on which he was an EP). In 2022, he appeared in the Netflix’s Look Both Ways, the HBO miniseries We Own This City and A24’s Pearl.
For Corenswet, Superman: Legacy will mark his first major leading role in a major studio film.

The year’s biggest casting derby has a pair of winners. “Superman: Legacy” director James Gunn has hired David Corenswet to play the Man of Steel and Emmy Award-winner Rachel Brosnahan to star as Lois Lane.
The announcement, broken by the Hollywood trades on Tuesday afternoon, ends weeks of speculation about who would play the key superhero roles. Gunn himself confirmed the news on Twitter and called the actors “wonderful people.”

Earlier this week, it was reported that Corenswet and Brosnahan were among six actors who auditioned via screen tests for the two roles. Corenswet apparently beat out Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney; Brosnahan bested Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor.
Interestingly, Corenswet and Brosnahan were initially allegedly paired with other actors. The Hollywood Reporter reported this week that Brosnahan and Hoult performed a screen test together while Corenswet was matched with Mackey.

James Gunn has found his Superman and Lois Lane.
After a lengthy search, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will star in Superman: Legacy, the film that will launch DC’s new universe under writer-director Gunn and his DC Studios co-boss, Peter Safran.
Corenswet and Brosnahan were among six actors who vied for the lead roles, with Gunn filming screen tests over the June 17 weekend with Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney also in contention to play Superman/Clark Kent and Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor in the running for Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.
Few roles are as coveted — or come with as much pressure — as Superman. Look, there’s no denying that things are dire for DC fans right now. With The Flash currently flopping in theaters, the sting of the Batgirl cancelation still lingering, and the hierarchy of power unchanged by Black Adam, those who want to see DC characters enjoying success similar to the Marvelous competition don’t have much hope. And with parent company Warner Bros. experiencing even larger problems, there’s nothing but dark clouds on the horizon.
But, look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No… it’s Superman! According to Deadline, the new Man of Steel will be played by relative newcomer David Corenswet. Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s more trade reporting about the quest for the next onscreen Superman.
On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter revealed a little bit more about the casting process for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film, his first major project as the co-boss of DC Films.
According to the trade, screen tests between actors and actresses on the list to play, respectively, Clark Kent and intrepid reporter Lois Lane have occurred with three distinct pairings. One test, the trade reported, had Nicholas Hoult as Clark and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois; in another, David Corenswet was matched with Emma Mackey. The final group featured Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor. Of note: A second day of tests with the three men dressed in the Superman costume also took place. During those screen tests, only Mackey as Lois was present.

‘The Flash’ is crashing down at the box office; the film has received a tepid response from critics and audiences, pointing out unsatisfying story developments, bad visual effects, and even worse fan service. It doesn’t matter if you like ‘The Flash’ or not. The fact is that it has become a huge blow for both current and future DC Films. It seems like the brand is all but dead in the minds of audiences, who are already even deserting Marvel and have enjoyed a fervently loyal fan base until now. This is why Superman: Legacy, the new film from current DC Films leader James Gunn, is such an important movie for DC and the entire genre.

The actors testing for the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy were revealed earlier this month, and a new report from THR has shed a little more light on what’s going down with the screen tests.
The Superman: Legacy screen tests were held last weekend, and sources told THR that those involved were split into predetermined pairs: Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan, Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor, and David Corenswet and Emmy Mackey. Several scenes were filmed with the actors in makeup and wardrobe as Clark Kent and the actresses as Lois Lane. The next screen test focused on Superman, with Hoult, Brittney, and Corenswet in full costume. The report notes that Mackey was brought in to play Lois Lane opposite each actor but cautions that this doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s the front-runner for Lane.

With The Flash not proving to be the box office savior Warner Bros. was anticipating, the pressure on new DC Studios’ heads James Gunn and Peter Safran has increased exponentially.
And that, in turn, means increased weight on Superman: Legacy, the inaugural movie from Gunn and Safran. And it may not get any weightier than casting the right actor to play Clark Kent/Superman and his romantic and professional foil, Lois Lane.
Gunn, who is writing and directing the feature, held screen tests the weekend of June 17 on the Warners lot in Burbank, and the process has been kept in a lead-lined box as Gunn shows the assembled cuts to a deciding committee of executives, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav among them. Despite the secrecy, some details have emerged, even as the final choice has not.

The search for Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, commonly known in these parts as Superman, is On!
Deadline has reported that DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are clearing their calendars for screen tests for a little over a week from now. Among the rumored names in the mix for the role of The Big Blue Boy Scout are Nicholas Hoult, last seen in the horror-comedy “Renfield,” David Corenswet, best known for the indie horror pic “Pearl” and HBO series “We Own This City,” and Tom Brittney, a lead on the series “Grantchester.”
Hoult and Brittney are both British. Corenswet is the only one from the good ol’ U.S.A. (born in Philly.) In the old days, Superman stood for “truth, justice, and the American way.” Coren also sounds a lot like “corn,” and the Kents do live in Smallville.

In a post from this weekend, the DC head wrote, “For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t Auditioning for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like @GlennHowerton or @ZacharyLevi having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top choices). For now, only one person has been Cast in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world”, capped off by a merman emoji.

The quest for James Gunn’s Superman is up, up and away.
Casting for Superman: Legacy, the feature meant to kick off Gunn and Peter Safran’s much-vaunted first chapter of DC Studios, is hitting a crucial phase, with a shortlist of names bubbling up for the roles of Clark Kent, Lois Lane and even Lex Luthor.
David Corenswet, who recently played the ill-fated projectionist opposite Mia Goth in Pearl, is among the top contenders to play Kent, aka Superman, advancing to the screen test stage that will likely take place after Memorial Day or in early June, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Two other contenders may also be in the mix, but their identities remain unknown.
Jacob Elordi, the sought-after star who broke out as the resident villain on HBO series Euphoria, is another name that has surfaced for the role of Kent, but sources say he never submitted himself into the ring.
