The Day Today was making Fake News its business long before it was even a twinkle in Donald Trump’s eye. Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris’ TV translation of their On the Hour BBC Radio 4 series parodied the gravely serious, scare-mongering, hyperbolic news style of the early 1990s with absurd, nonsensical headlines: “Portillo’s teeth removed to boost Pound. Exploded cardinal preaches sermon from fish tank. And where now for man raised by puffins?”
With a comedy team including Steve Coogan (who road-tested Alan Partridge on TV for the first time here), Rebecca Front, David Schneider and Doon Mackichan, the show didn’t aim to hoodwink its audience or even the public figures in the news, the target was the news itself. And if speaking truth to power is the essence of good satire, then the target doesn’t come much more powerful than the media, and satires don...

In his best film, 2017’s The Big Sick, director Michael Showalter showed a deft hand balancing interracial rom-com conventions with an affecting dash of hospital drama to deliver a love story distinguished by humorous, culturally specific insights and tender depth of feeling. Spoiler Alert in many ways is a queer companion piece, exploring another relationship drawn from real life, this time between gay men. The chief difference, as the title and opening scene indicate, is the outcome of the illness, pushing the new movie further into traditional weepie territory, a move acknowledged with a winking nod to Terms of Endearment.
There are elements of preciousness and quirks that can lean toward the cutesy, even if they do come directly from entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello’s memoir about his 13 years with photographer Kit Cowan. I mean, how many gay men would stick around after...

Given how displeased Ellen Barkin had seemed to be to have been killed off Animal Kingdom in the TNT drama’s penultimate Season 4 episode, it wasn’t exactly a surprise that she didn’t return for Sunday’s series finale. What was a surprise, however, was that the show didn’t use any flashbacks of her version of Smurf, even as oldest son Pope was grappling with his culpability in twin sister Julia’s downfall. How come?
“There had been some concepts of how to introduce Smurf [into the episode],” showrunner Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine. And any way you slice it, “the show has always been about Smurf.

Sunday’s series finale of Animal Kingdom left Jake Weary’s Deran on the lowest of low notes. Smurf’s youngest son had been double-crossed by nephew J, beloved brother Craig had been fatally shot in a convenience-store holdup, and eventually, Deran would have to find out that oldest sibling Pope had also perished. But the end of the show isn’t necessarily the end of the character’s story, EP Daniele Nathanson tells TVLine.

If you're still reeling from the events of Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 13, from J's vengeance, those heartbreaking flashbacks, and the devastating deaths, then you are not alone.

Only one Cody reigns supreme.
It's difficult even to process Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 13, as it marks this beloved series' conclusion, especially after those losses.
The cleverly titled "Fubar," which typically stands for "Fucked Up Beyond All Repair/Recognition," summed up the ruining of the Cody family, legacy, and kingdom.
J kept his damn promise to Smurf from Animal Kingdom Season 3 Episode 13, and he took it all.
The series finale will undoubtedly be one of those polarizing events where people either appreciate its straightforwardness or lament how things ended. I'm still working through my own feelings about it, so brace yourselves and grab a snack for a long review; you've been warned.
After months of speculation and some of the most creative, wild, outlandish, bizarre, and shocking theories by viewers, the real surprise of the actual finale is how predictable and direct it is.

J officially made his move, and nothing will ever be the same again.
If there were any doubts whatsoever that J planned to screw over his uncles and has had a long game in mind this entire time, it was put to bed during Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 12.
The penultimate episode of the series put all the pieces into place for what should be an explosive series finale that will have us talking.
Julia has been so prominent throughout Animal Kingdom Season 6, but in this particular installment, she had such a presence in both the past and the present for J.
We literally opened with J visiting her grave, which frustratingly is right there along with Smurf and Baz. It set the tone for where J's head is and why he'd feel a certain way or remain on this steady path towards vengeance.
Julia can't even rest in peace. She's...
If there were any doubts whatsoever that J planned to screw over his uncles and has had a long game in mind this entire time, it was put to bed during Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 12.

In Sunday’s Animal Kingdom, the series’ next to last episode, the plan to break Pope out of jail was going absolutely swimmingly. Or so it at first appeared.
After Catherine’s killer earned himself a transfer to a prison that could assure his physical safety by revealing where he’d buried Colby’s body (remember him?), Pope implanted in his gut a tracker that J snuck to him during a visit. Meanwhile, Craig and Deran went on kind of a goodbye tour of Oceanside, catching a few waves and getting into one last brawl on the beach. As Deran...

When you dig too much into the past, you're bound to discover things you'd rather not know.
The creepy, incestual vibes of the flashbacks got progressively worse during Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 11, and with two different timelines of pivotal points in Andrew Cody's life, the build-up until the prison break is enough to leave a person conflicted and on edge.
What more can you expect from these last few installments of this series?
The hour did its part in bringing back two familiar faces with Denis Leary and, to the excitement of many, Scott Speedman.
Much of the hour consisted of the guys trying to get their lives and futures in check in preparation for the prison break.
Once they pull off their plan, they have to leave the country for good, take off their own respective ways, and there's no coming back.
The reality of their plans hit each...

Lenny Kravitz called it when he sang that it ain’t over till it’s over, ’cause we sure thought that Animal Kingdom’s Pope was as good as done for. But a visit from a “ghost” in Sunday’s episode seemed to restore his lust for life.
In the especially flashback-filled “Hit and Run,” we followed the erstwhile Andrew staking out a bank to rob with Baz (Scott Speedman, back in action). Rather than just focus on the job at hand, Catherine’s boyfriend called his “brother” on leaving flowers in her car and told him not to be a weirdo.

Brace yourselves, Animal Kingdom Fanatics.
Only three episodes remain in the series, and the Codys' final chapter promises a hell of a ride.
The Codys aren't the only ones who know how to score. TV Fanatic scored an exclusive sneak peek of Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 11, and it's juicy.
A lot is happening in the present now that Pope is in prison for murder, and the others are orchestrating a prison break to get him out.
It's more complicated when you factor in that J is making ulterior plans behind his uncles' backs.
While Craig and Deran are all in on busting Pope out and going on the run, leaving Oceanside and what's left of their kingdom behind, J has other plans.
J has worked hard to climb the ranks and take over.
He made it his mission, and he's not inclined to leave everything he built behind. If that...

The Codys are about to pull off the most outrageous, dangerous, and essential job of their lives.
By the end of Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 10, the Cody trio agreed that they would bust Pope out of prison and leave Oceanside forever.
Is it even possible for them to pull off something like this?! And will Pope even cooperate?
Shit got real and fast with this installment, as the reality, or shall we say Animal Kingdom's version of reality, sank in that Pope was willing to sit in prison for 25 to life for killing Cath, assuming he'd even last that long.
As in, seemingly, nothing will come from Thompson's actions to get what she wanted. The expensive lawyers the Codys are paying had no decent solutions or challenged some of the many outlandish things that led to Pope's arrest and imprisonment.
I don't know how to feel about any of that.

Technically, we haven’t heard that the Grim Reaper will be making a guest appearance on Animal Kingdom before the end of the series’ sixth and final season. But Sunday’s “Clink” sure began to make it seem inevitable.
On one hand, we had Pope behind bars. The Codys had bought him protection on the inside from a guy on the outside named Finnegan. However, it didn’t do the prisoner a whole helluva lotta good, because he repelled help pretty much the way that Deran might a shave and a haircut. Before the hour was through, Pope had not...

They came out swinging, and it feels like we're watching an empire burn to ash around us.
Essentially, Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 9 was a game-changer of an installment that seemingly marks the beginning of the end.
And the remaining installments, we'll learn the fate of Codys as we know them.
They've done a fantastic job at incorporating many Biblical references and applying them to Pope, specifically. "Gethsemane" was the name of the hour, and it couldn't have suited the plot better.
I couldn't stop thinking about the imagery of Pope, who we know derived the nickname from his interest in religion and spirituality, clinging to Amy's crucifix/cross as he sat in a jail cell.
The word Gethsemane derives from Hebrew and references the oil pressing process. Two slabs crushed olives to produce oil.
Gethsemane was the garden where Jesus was betrayed and arrested. It's where he was the night before his crucifixtion.

Ok, now it really feels like the beginning of the end for Animal Kingdom. In Sunday’s game-changing “Gethsemane,” the Codys circled the wagons around Pope and retained a high-priced attorney to accompany him when he turned himself in for assault.
Wait, not murder? No, assault. Thompson didn’t have enough evidence to bring him in for killing Catherine, so she had an Oceanside detective put out a warrant for his arrest for assaulting Taylor. Once Pope was in the interrogation room, Thompson came in before his lawyer did and, whether Andrew liked it or not, laid out all of...

Welp, Pope and Thompson's faceoff went about as well as you'd expect, which is to say not good at all.
While much of Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 8 meandered with Deran, Tommy, and J's side quest for "booty" and the coked-up misadventures of Craig and Renn, Pope's revelation about Thompson is what served as any semblance of a plot throughline.
The Thompson news and confession about Cath certainly put a damper on the mood.
Back in 1992, Julia and Baz were going at it like the horny teenagers they were, and the only surprise was that it took Andrew so long to realize what was happening.
Did they think they were being slick and hiding? They sucked, if so.
It's hard to believe they even tried to keep their relationship under wraps when you had Baz tracing circles along her arm and constantly sending Andrew away. Julia was sticking her hand down...

Ok, so things looked bad for Animal Kingdom’s Pope in Sunday’s episode. Like, real bad.
First, the telltale cereal box combined with security footage tipped him off to the fact that someone had been in the house. Then, after being punched a coupla times, Taylor folded like a house of cards and admitted that his “mom” was Detective Thompson. Finally, Pope confronted the cop and was chagrined to learn that — ruh-roh — she didn’t want a payoff, she wanted to bring Catherine’s killer to justice.

Never mind that just last week Animal Kingdom’s Craig and Deran were beating the stuffing out of one another. When little Nick was kidnapped by Renn’s drug-dealing competition in Sunday’s especially tense episode, the baby’s daddy ran to his kid brother as fast as he used to race toward a line of coke.
Deran not only came through for Craig, he helped his sibling abduct another drug dealer and sneak into a Nazi drug den, and took three slugs to the bulletproof vest so that Nick could be safely retrieved. “This ain’t over,” the scary Nazi drug dealer warned.

The stress of waiting to see when Pope gets hauled in for Cath's murder is damn near unbearable.
The jewelry heist was front and center for the majority of Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 6, but there was more progression in Thompson's shady investigation into Pope.
And Deran and Craig had their annual brawl while those 1992 flashbacks continued to shift perceptions of Julia.
It was all hands on deck as they dove into this jewelry heist, complete with costumes, undercover positions, and close calls.
In hindsight, Craig was probably right about sending two of them inside to collect all the pieces. While it would've been hard to do that because of the nature of security, they could have cut down half the time with more hands and gotten that gaudy cross that was probably worth more than everything combined.
Deran already stood out enough wandering around in that Lafd uniform, and it's...

In Sunday’s Animal Kingdom, everything that could go wrong with the Codys’ jewel theft seemed to — but only to me. Smurf’s boys appeared to think that the heist was a rousing success.
To be fair, the guys did make off with apparently all but one of Eddie’s sky-high-priced baubles — the one that Brock gave to girlfriend Tiana. After Deran gained access to the party by donning his fire marshal costume, Pope snuck in as a plumber and left the counterfeit pieces for him in the toilet tank. Then, while “paparazzo” Craig created a disturbance on the lawn...

Lifetime's got Flowers in the Attic: The Origin, which explores the beginning of the storied V.C. Andrews collection, and HBO has The Anarchists, a docuseries about supposed anarchists living outside of the system. It's a whole lot of weed, backstabbing, and partying. Who would've guessed?

V.C. Andrews is coming to Lifetime in series form, and Tvd’s Paul Wesley is one of its stars.
Olivia Winfield gives up her home and name to become Mrs. Malcolm Foxworth, wife to the wealthiest man in the nation, but her new life at Foxworth hall is not what she envisioned.
We’ll tune into the season to see the events that lead up to her eventual destruction.

By now, everyone who isn't a Cody is getting the side-eye.
The Eddie Pham job is right around the corner as the guys prepped for it during Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 5, but other factors in the Codys' personal lives raise some suspicions.
Regarding who faces the most risk right now, Pope wins by a landslide.
We had another slow burn hour of the series as the characters prepared for the new job, and the fraught tension between Craig and Deran continued to build.
We also saw that J's love life got needlessly complicated and raised some concerns for Pope.
Deran and Craig are due to have it out. The countdown is on until they have a full-out brawl to work out some of their issues with each other.
You can tell that Deran feels like they're becoming distant from each other, and it's getting under his skin. He seems a bit lost without Craig.

We have never seen Pope this happy and stable. It makes the buildup to Thompson coming after Pope feel more nerve-wracking as a result.
His skate park has brought him such joy, and while he was resistant to the notion of sharing it with others, he quickly realized that if you can't, or rather shouldn't, literally beat them,...

Everyone knows the old saying about what happens if you play with fire, right? Everyone, that is, except for a certain Animal Kingdom character. In Sunday’s sixth and final season premiere, the Cody boys sent a traitor to the metaphorical burn ward and, just for good measure, a nuisance to the actual ER. Who was on the receiving end of the thugs’ version of justice? Read on, and we’ll go over not only what happened in the first of Sunday’s back-to-back episodes but the second as well.

Is this the calm before the storm?
We dove right back into life with the Cody boys during Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 1 and Animal Kingdom Season 6 Episode 2 for a slow burn two-hour premiere.
Except for some personal woes on Craig's end, things appeared to be okay with the guys, but we all know that looks can be deceiving.
It took some time for the guys to find their grounding after Smurf's death, but now they're all settling in to who they are without her and as a unit of their own.
They each have their respective roles cemented and seem to be doing relatively well after their last heist. J's planning for them is working out, and they all trust him with the bookkeeping, estate planning, and more.
Shockingly, Deran is the one who trusts J the most and at least respects J's vision, and can provide the aid that the youngest Cody needs.
