One of American cinema’s most unusual delights celebrated its 20th birthday in Boston, Massachusetts last week. The Boston Underground Film Festival has a simple name and premise, but its breadth of content is far from standard. Its fearless leaders, Nicole McControversy and Kevin Monahan, consistently curate beguiling, unexpected work from around the world. With films from Turkey, Mexico, the UK, South Korea and more, the festival has outdone itself, but beyond internationality, the programming is inclusive as well.
This year's festival opened with My Name is Myeisha, a searing experimental drama recounting a true story of police brutality. Good Manners closed out the festival, bringing a tense, beautifully shot twist on several genres from Brazil. Its quiet characterizations and slow-building oddities create an almost lulling pace, so the moments of horror arise suddenly with genuine effect. Australia’s premier genre festival – Monster Fest – has unveiled its final wave of films for the 2016 festival, which is set to take place November 24-27 at the Lido Cinemas in Melbourne.
The team of features programmers – which includes festival director Kier-La Janisse, Monster Pictures co-founder Neil Foley, Boston Underground Film Festival Director of Programming Nicole McControversy and writer/programmer/punk legend Chris D. – vetted over 600 features in selecting the 2016 Monster Fest lineup, which includes new crime films Dog Eat Dog and The Hollow Point from Paul Schrader and Gonzalo López-Gallego respectively, gory slasher throwback The Windmill Massacre (reviewed here), the hometown premiere of epic period western The Legend of Ben Hall with cast in person and acclaimed Tiff selections Prevenge and Interchange alongside Fantastic Fest faves such as the Aussie-made yuletide thriller Safe Neighbourhood and the devastating – and polarizing – Playground.

The Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival begins next week, and alongside it, the Frontieres Market. This co-production market, focused on genre film, will bring twenty productions from the likes of Can Evrenol (Baskin), Amy Darling (Violent), Alexandre Phiippe (Doc of the Dead), and Larry Fessenden (Wendigo), among others. Taking place at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff) from March 30-April 1, Frontières will showcase 20 projects from the likes of Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK.
A total of 20 projects were selected from a record number of submissions new projects from Baskin’s Can Evrenol, Doc Of The Dead’s Alexandre Philippe, Go Down Death’s Aaron Schimberg and I Sell The Dead’s Glenn McQuaid.
