Universal Pictures is staying in the cold-weather business with Baltasar Kormákur. The studio has acquired Vikingr, a project based on the classic tales deriving from the Icelandic Sagas. Those stories document the larger-than-life heroes, adventures and battles of early Nordic settlers as well as daily life in the Viking age. Everest helmer Kormákur, an Icelander, will direct the pic based on the screenplay he wrote with Olafur Egill Egilsson.
Kormákur is currently in post on Everest for Universal, Working Title and Cross Creek Pictures. That mountain climbing disaster pic has a September 2015 release date and stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal. The director, whose The Deep was shortlisted for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2012, also helmed Universal’s 2 Guns last year and 2012’s Contraband.
Vikingr producers include Kormákur under his Rvk Studios banner; Marc Platt Productions’ Marc Platt and Adam Siegel; Working Title’s Tim Bevan...
