As Hollywood looks for new content to keep consumers engaged, video games have become an intellectual property gold mine with the number of film and television adaptations consistently growing over the last two decades — especially in the streaming world.
Video game adaptations released within the past several years include the films “Uncharted,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” and “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” and TV shows “The Witcher,” “Halo,” “Arcane,” “Resident Evil” and “Cyberpunk Edgerunners.”
But on Sunday, HBO debuts “The Last of Us” with the daring goal of elevating the video-game adaptation to prestige TV — something that hasn’t truly been accomplished before.
While many past attempts at television and film adaptations of video games have failed to live up to fan expectations, Cowen entertainment, media and gaming analyst Doug Creutz told TheWrap that the current boom differs in that storytellers are taking the...

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Amazon Studios’ ambitious fantasy series based on the works of author J.R.R. Tolkien and reportedly the most expensive television series ever made, premieres Sept. 2 on Amazon Prime Video. But as the social embargo lifts, critics and fans who have seen the first two episodes ahead of time are flocking to Twitter to share their opinions on the highly anticipated series.
Eric Francisco, senior film/TV writer at Inverse, hailed “Rings of Power” as “big, bold and beautiful” but indicated uncertainty as to whether the prequel series will “sit alongside” Peter Jackson’s film trilogy or “deserve Tolkien’s name.”
“For now, it’s all the maximalist pizazz one might expect from a historically expensive production,” he wrote.
I've seen #RingsofPower and I can say for certain you're in for a treat. Big, bold, and beautiful to behold. Tbd if it'll sit...

Fantasy fans have barely had the chance to catch their breath after the "House of the Dragon" premiere took viewers back to Westeros for the first time in years. Now, a different world of magic is about to make a comeback, with "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." The new Prime Video series is set to debut September 2, 2022, and thanks to the specifics of the rights deal secured by Amazon Studios, it will pull not from J.R.R. Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" books, but from lesser-known Middle-earth history texts, like the books' appendices.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" has a lot riding on its success: the series reportedly has a budget of over 400 million for its first season, which would make it the most expensive TV show ever made. Those big numbers could translate to great storytelling and huge success, or,...

The first reactions to Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” are in — and they’re a wild ride, just like the movie.
As the social media embargo lifted on the film — which stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver — Tuesday afternoon, film critics and journalists took to Twitter to either praise “House of Gucci” or air their grievances. Full reviews will arrive on Nov. 22.
The film stars Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, the wife of Maurizio Gucci (Driver) who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s murder. It follows the events and aftermath of Gucci’s 1995 assassination, spanning three decades in the life of the high fashion family. “House of Gucci” also stars Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino.
Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes critic Erik Davis raved about the film, even comparing it to “The Godfather.”
“#HouseOfGucci has a definite Godfather vibe, rich w/ family betrayal, transformative performances,...

First reactions for Ridley Scott’s star-studded murder drama “House of Gucci” are trickling in following the movie’s official world premiere in London. The film is Scott’s second major release of 2021 following “The Last Duel,” which launched to strong reviews out of the Venice Film Festival but flopped at the box office. Will “House of Gucci” be a rebound for Scott? Based on the first reactions below, it appears the director has made a messy and soapy fashion epic that’s bound to be one of the buzziest films of the holiday movie season.
Written by Roberto Bentivegna and based on the Sarah Gay Gorden book “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,” Scott’s film casts Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of orchestrating the assassination of her ex-husband and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci...

Universal and AMC Theaters have recently announced a multi-year agreement that will allow the largest theater chain in the U.S. to screen Universal titles for 17 days, whereupon these can hit Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) platforms. It’s a game-changing deal that further shrinks the theatrical window—traditionally spanning 90 days—that allows films to show in cinemas before they can be released to VOD services. This isn’t just a move that will change the future of two entertainment giants, but one that’s poised to reshape our movie-going habits: how exactly will it change the kind of films we may expect to watch on a big screen?Admittedly, the debate over shorter theatrical windows has been raging for years, with cinemas notoriously cautious about trimming runs on their screens. Back in March, as theatres began to shut in response to the pandemic, Universal made the then-unprecedented decision to...

Hide your chimichangas, as special guest Brandon Katz joins the Cinemaholics to help review Deadpool 2, the sequel to the R-rated superhero smash hit that broke all barriers (including the fourth wall).
Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as the gun-toting, meta-slinging Merc With a Mouth in a follow-up that’s longer, bloodier and if most critics are to be believed, even better than the original. But where do the Cinemaholics stand on Deadpool 2? You’ll have to listen to find out.
Later in the show, we go all in on some mini-reviews, starting with a spoiler-free reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story. We also talk about the season finales for Silicon Valley season 5 and Barry season 1, both on HBO. And finally, Will does his best to sell us on Book Club, starring Jane Fonda, as well as the new documentary Pope Francis: A Man of his Word.
