Doctor Who: The Spear of Destiny
I hope it isn’t oversharing to say that I read this book sitting in bed with a cup of tea and a plate of biscuits, on a Saturday morning, warm and cosy, while the snow fell heavily outside and my local radio station played Duran Duran. No, I’m not 10 years old and it isn’t the early 1980s, but reading this book transported me back to my childhood.
The Spear of Destiny is a short Doctor Who story featuring the third Doctor, as portrayed on TV by Jon Pertwee, and his assistant Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning.
It is part of a series of 11 books, one for each Doctor, to celebrate the TV show’s 50th anniversary. And it’s a good one.
The writer, Marcus Sedgwick, clearly knows the Pertwee era of the show very well. The characterization of,...

Andrew takes a look at the third of Puffin's Doctor Who eshort stories, this time from Marcus Sedgwick, taking us up to Jon Pertwee's era...
Another Doctor Who ebook, and with probably the best characterisation of the sort-of-titular hero yet, The Spear of Destiny comes complete with Unit-dating jokes and Action by Havoc. Unlike the previous two entries in the series, it feels like an adventure from its televisual era, with many nostalgic nods and references.
The Spear of Destiny concerns Norse mythology, mined to varying effect in Terminus, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and The Curse of Fenric. As with much of the Letts/Dicks era of Doctor Who, a rational scientific explanation is sought for the magical or fantastic – in this case the pantheon of Viking gods, incorporating the spear that pierced Jesus' side for good measure.

This month’s anniversary Doctor Who e-book will be penned by British author Marcus Sedgwick, writer of the acclaimed novel Floodland, The Spear of Destiny features The Doctor in his third incarnation and his assistant Jo Grant as they attempt to retrieve Odin’s spear Gungnir. Marcus notes an interesting parallel between “mythology and legend”, as he puts it – Odin was hung on the World Tree for nine days, until finally his side was pierced by his own weapon, the spear Gungnir. This same even would re-appear in Christian dogma as part of of the Crucifixion. Braking from the previous two books, Mr. Sedgwick has elected to bring back a classic Who villain. And this being the Pertwee era Doctor, there could be no more iconic villain that The Master. Mr Sedgwick’s response to writing for the classic her is appropriately calm and reserved. from his Blog: Doctor Who is iconic.

To mark the centenary of Bram Stoker's death, we joined a conference at Keats House in London's Hampstead where the great and the ghouls of vampire scholarship joined up for two days of talks.
Stoker's great-grandnephew Dacre Stoker and the scholar Elizabeth Miller introduced their new book based on the discovery of a set of journals written by Stoker in his early years. Christopher Frayling explains why he regrets vampires becoming mainstream, and writers Kevin Jackson and Marcus Sedgewick exchange little-known vampire facts. We pay a visit to the columbarium at Golders Green Crematorium where Stoker's ashes are kept. Plus, we talk to the film critic and novelist Kim Newman about the reissue of his cult series Anno Dracula.
Reading list
The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker edited by Dacre Stoker and Elizabeth Miller
Anno Dracula by Kim Newman
Bite by Kevin Jackson
Midwinter Blood by Marcus Sedgwick
