Video game nostalgia seems to be at an all-time high right now; either that or video game studios have just run out of ideas. Whatever the reason, we’re currently in the midst of a wave of old-school early video games getting reboots, remakes or reduxes. Case in point, the recently-released high def remakes of Wonderboy: Asha in Monster World (aka Monster World 4) and Alex Kidd in Miracle World Dx…
Wonderboy: Asha in Monster World
My experience with Wonderboy, unlike a lot of British gamers who grew up with the Sega Master System, is not actually an experience with Wonderboy. Let me explain… You see some of us actually were Nintendo fans back in the day and bought an Nes rather than the SMS – in my case when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pack-in set was released in the UK and put on sale in Boots of all places! So...

Before Sega had Sonic the Hedgehog, it had Alex Kidd, the high-flying protagonist of several ’80s platformers on the Master System and Genesis consoles. While Alex has long been regarded as a relic of gaming’s 8-bt and 16-bit era, forgotten after the blue hedgehog took over as Sega‘s mascot in 1991, Merge Games and Jankenteam are planning the little hero’s big comeback.
During the first day of IGN Expo in June, the studios announced Alex Kidd in Miracle World Dx, a remake of the classic 1986 platformer for the Sega Master System. It’s fitting that Alex Kidd’s very first adventure over 30 years ago will also be his bridge to modern consoles. Alex Kidd in the Miracle World Dx will adapt all of the original’s games levels with a new, colorful art style that’s sort of a fusion between modern graphics and the sprites the ’80s and ’90s were known for.

Set to launch on September 19th, it’s safe to say anticipation is Very high for the Sega Mega Drive Mini – especially considering it comes from M2, who are handling the porting process. They’ve previously worked on Sega Ages and Sega 3D Classics Collection, with a fantastic reputation based on the quality of their emulation projects and their faithfully recreated ports. We’ve already had information on the first 30 games coming to the mini console and now we’ve got a list of the last ten… Nope. Not ten but Twelve(!) more games because Sega have decided to throw two extra bonus games into the mix!
The first bonus game is the iconic Tetris which will be dropping on to the Sega Mega Drive Mini, along with huge shoot ‘em up masterpiece Darius! Yes, the beloved arcade classic is making its way to a brand-new platform, and you won...

I always enjoy a good strong colourful platformer. It takes me back to my childhood, playing Wonder Boy and Alex Kidd on my Sega. Those were the days… Miles & Kilo brings that pixelated old-school charm in droves, with a score of classic style video-game music to go along with the platforming adventure fun. Milo and his pet dog, Kilo, are stranded on an island after their plane crashes. They must now find all the missing pieces of their plane in order to get out of this place, and escape their newfound enemies, let by a ghostly guy.
So, what about the game? What makes this stand out? Does Miles & Kilo stand out?
Well… yes. It does. You travel from world to world, similar to the Mario games, and play through levels that become more and more difficult as you play. The levels are short and play in a sort of...

Billed as a a lovingly crafted 8-bit retro action platformer that goes beyond just pixels and chiptunes, Venture Kid is a throwback to the golden age of cartridge games; a tribute, a love letter if you will, to the platforming genre and the Nes-era of platforming in particular. Having debuted on mobile some years ago, Venture Kid finally makes it to Nintendo’s latest console, where it faces stiff competition from a myriad of 8-bit pixel platformer – including the very game series it homages, Mega Man, with the Mega Man Legacy Collection.
Though if I’m honest, to me, Venture Kid felt more like the Famicom game Little Dracula than Mega Man, with similar cutesy graphics to that chibi-Castlevania game… For those that haven’t played that particular game, think visuals more akin to Adventure Island or [dare I say it?] the Master System classic Alex Kidd.

Before that pesky blue hedgehog rolled along and stole the show, the big-eared, shaggy-haired Alex Kidd was the closest thing Sega had to a Mario-style company mascot. Back in the mid-80s, Alex Kidd In Miracle World and its sequels were also the Sega Master System's answer to Super Mario Bros - jaunty, colourful platformers that rewarded precise jumping and the diligent collecting of coins and other trinkets.

Antoine Fuqua looks like he's back in line to direct Universal's planned remake of Scarface...
In a surprise to nobody, Universal has officially dropped the summer 2018 release date it had planned for its latest remake of Scarface. Given that it’s been without a director since Suicide Squad’s David Ayer left the film last summer, and not a frame of footage had been shot, the delay was expected.

Whatever you thought of Mute, the latest film from director Duncan Jones, it's clearly a deeply personal story. Electric Dreams returns with a familiar story revised for the modern, therapy age. Spoilers ahead…
This review contains spoilers for The Father Thing and previous episode, Human Is.
See related Why Alex Kidd is better than Mario 80s and 90s videogames that lost their anime and manga licenses
Leaving an almost four-month gap between Electric Dreams’ previous episode and this story was an unwittingly judicious move by Channel 4. Not only would it have felt clumsy to show two alien-possession stories back-to-back, the relative complexity of the first—in which the alien invader turns out to be preferable to the human it imitates—would have emphasised a lack of the same in the second. With a good chunk of air between them, it’s easier to view The Father Thing on its own merits.
Easier, but not easy, because The Father Thing tells a story so familiar...

Seediness isn’t a sine qua non of murder detective TV. Bergerac and Miss Marple had corpses up the wazoo but neither was ever seedy. Marcella, on the other hand, feels sleazier than redeeming the free lap dance off a full Rhino Spearmint loyalty card you've found behind some bins.
Marcella isn’t nice crime TV. Not because nice is a foreign country to its lead, who behaves as though irritated by a permanently undislodgeable wedgie, but because it’s nasty. It wants to be. Series one was a nasty prime time serial killer tale, and series two is the even nastier prime time tale of an occultist,...
