Kerry Washington explains in her new memoir, “Thicker Than Water,” that she actively rejected playing the “white girl’s best friend” after starring in “Against the Ropes,” the 2004 boxing drama headlined by Meg Ryan and Omar Epps. The film starred Ryan as Jackie Kallen, the first woman to achieve success as a boxing manager. Washington played Jackie’s best friend, a receptionist named Renee.
“In it, I played [Meg Ryan’s] coworker and confidante – this was becoming a new niche for me, the white girl’s best friend,” Washington writes (via Entertainment Weekly).
As Washington remembers, “Against the Ropes” was her third project in a row where she was playing the best friend to the white female lead. First came 2001’s “Save the Last Dance,” in which was Julia Stiles’ Bff, then she shot the scrapped pilot for the 2004 Fox dramedy series “Wonderfalls,” where she was the best friend of Caroline Dhavernas’ main character.

Unchain our hearts! In a year of epic film and television reunions, here's a silver screen gem to add to the list. Almost a decade before Kerry Washington became synonymous with "handling" White House relations, she celebrated an early role as Ray Charles' devoted wife Della Bea Robinson in the 2004 biopic Ray. Starring alongside Jamie Foxx in the titular role and Regina King as his on-the-road lover Margie Hendricks, the trio went on to win over the box office and garnered Foxx his first Oscar. The musical stars have aligned 12 years later when all three were brought together on the same red carpet at the American Black Film Festival Sunday where King was a featured...

Kerry Washington talks "Django Unchained" It's been eight long years since Kerry Washington played Della Bea Robinson, the wife to Jamie Foxx's Oscar-winning turn in "Ray." The two are reunited in "Django Unchained," Quentin Tarantino's forthcoming movie set in the time of slavery, and once again, they are husband and wife. Washington plays Broomhilda, the spouse of Foxx's titular Django, who is being held at Candyland, the plantation run by the sadistic Calvin Candy (Leonardo DiCaprio), who pits his slaves against one another in arena-style combat. It's that hell on earth that Django goes, along with the bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) who purchased his freedom, in the hopes of rescuing her. The film, which is due on Christmas Day, sounds like an intense piece of work, different from Tarantino's past movies, though sharing a similar sensibility. Washington, along with several of her co-stars, spoke to...

After casting nearly the entire male leads, Quentin Tarantino has finally decided that Kerry Washington would play the role of Broomhilda, the wife of that titular character played by Jamie Foxx, in the Djagno Unchained. In the film, Django is a freed slave who is trained by a German Bounty Hunter (Christoph Waltz) and becomes a deadly bounty himself. But Django’s real desire is to be reunited with his wife which eventually leads up to a confrontation in Candyland, a ranch owned by the notorious Calvin Candie played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
According to Deadline, Tarninto had his eye on Washington from the very beginning but he was also intrigued with making a discovery in the role, and that led to a long casting search before the director went back to Washington for the female lead.
Washingston is probably best known for her roles in Ray, where she played as Ray Charles’s wife,...

Kerry Washington was first rumored to play Broomhilda, the slave wife to the title character in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, all the way back in June and as far as I know she was the only name ever linked to the role and now it is officially hers. Deadline.com reports Washington will play Broomhilda, the long-suffering slave wife of Django (Jamie Foxx), who is freed by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) and taught the tricks of that trade. Django's real desire is to be reunited with his wife, who winds up in a variety of unsavory places and whose travails drive the plot. It leads to a confrontation in Candyland, a ranch owned by the notorious Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). This will be the second time Washington has played the wife opposite Foxx after playing Della Bea Robinson, wife to Ray Charles played by Foxx, in Taylor Hackford...

Variety has added a bit of news to the earlier report that Jamie Foxx will be playing the title character in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained by reporting we may have a Ray reunion in which Kerry Washington would once again play Foxx's wife.
In Django Unchained Foxx will play Django, a freed slave who seeks to reunite with Broomhilda, his slave wife, a journey which will see him team up with Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German bounty hunter, to take down Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), an evil plantation owner. Samuel L. Jackson is expected to play Stephen, Candie's right-hand man.
Variety reports Washington is "one of a handful in the mix" in contention for the role of Broomhilda. There is no word on any of the other actresses in contention.
