A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production in 2022 with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Matilda Lutz ended up starring in the film, and while we still don’t know when we’ll get to see her version of the title character in action, she did talk about the making of the film (and the metal bikini she had to wear in it) during an interview with Collider.
Lutz said she had a great experience working on Red Sonja, getting the chance to do stunts and horseback riding, to work with Bassett. She added, “What I think is different from what we know...

“You’re like one of those brainwashed missionaries,” Georgia Eyers’ character Lara fumes to her husband Ron (Dan Ewing). Her remark cuts deep into Ron’s faith. But he never wavers. He doubles down on his delusions, even if they harm those he loves. The conversation, during which Lara convulses and seemingly switches personalities, brings up questions about blind religion, science, and mental health. Throughout Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism, director Nick Kozakis confronts extremism and how it so easily spreads like a contagion.
Set in 1994, the film takes place in Eastfield, Australia and follows Lara and Ron as they contend with Lara’s ailing mental health and Ron’s belief that it’s a spiritual matter. Lara has been found more than once dancing naked on the front lawn. She’s been hallucinating, mostly images of a horned beast with scaly, fiery-red skin. While...

The upcoming “Red Sonja" live-action feature, directed by M.J. Bassett ("Solomon Kane"), based on Robert E. Howard's character 'Red Sonya of Rogatino', reimagined in 1973 by writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics, stars Matilda Lutz, Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El Feitury and Katrina Durden:
Originally, Robert E. Howard's 'Sonya of Rugantino', was a female pirate from the 16th century, debuting in Howard's short story "The Shadow of the Vulture" in "Magic Carpet" magazine (1934).
Writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith reworked the character in 1973, for Marvel Comics "Conan the Barbarian #23, transposing the timeline to Howard's 'Hyborian Age'.
"...'Red Sonja' lives with her family in a humble house in the 'Western Hyrkanian' steppes. When she is 21, a group of mercenaries kills her family and burns down their house. Sonja attempts to defend herself, but cannot lift her...

Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Today The Hollywood Reporter posted an interesting article about how Red Sonja was able to escape from development hell… and it basically boils down to a director’s enthusiasm for the material and a producer’s desperation to get the movie made.
The 50-something Bassett says she has been borderline obsessed with Red Sonja since her childhood, and “I cursed every time they announced someone else (as director). I kept telling them, ‘When you change again, let me know.’” And they did let her know when Soloway...

German star Veronica Ferres (Rossini, Crisis, Salt & Fire) has joined the cast of sword and sorcery reboot Red Sonja.
Ferres will play the mother of Red Sonja and the Goddess Ashera in the new film, which is being pitched as more an adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s original Marvel comic than a reboot of the 1985 feature starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 80s film was a notorious flop. Producers Millennium Media are also handling international sales.
Italian-American actress Matilda Lutz (Revenge) is playing Red Sonja. Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury and Katrina Durden co-star.
M.J. Bassett (Rouge, Silent Hill: Revelation) is directing, taking over from Joey Soloway, who is still attached as an executive producer on the project. Red Sonja is currently shooting at Millennium’s Nu Boyana studios in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Near the end of August, it was announced that the long-awaited Red Sonja reboot was filming with M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directing and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) taking on the lead role. In early September, we heard that Oliver Trevena (The Rising Hawk) had joined Lutz in the cast – and Trevena’s character was the only one, other than Red Sonja herself, we ever got a description of. The actor had been cast as Tr’aal, “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”. Unfortunately Deadline reports that Trevena has since had to drop out of Red Sonja due to scheduling issues. They also report that Rhona Mitra of Doomsday and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is in the cast, but no details about her character have been revealed.

In the nearly four decades since the first live-action film starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, another adaptation of Dynamite Entertainment's "Red Sonja" has failed to materialize in Hollywood — but it's not for lack of trying. Robert Rodriguez once had a vision that included Rose McGowan in the titular role. Before allegations of sexual assault were brought to light, Bryan Singer was also in line to helm a project based on the character originally created for Marvel Comics in 1973 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith. And the third attempt in recent history included "Ant-Man and the Wasp" star Hannah John-Kamen as the lead and "Transparent" creator Joey Soloway in the director's chair.

After spending nearly fifteen years in development hell, the Red Sonja reboot has finally started filming! Millennium Media has announced that Red Sonja is being directed by M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) and stars Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as the title character.
Bassett came on board to direct the film five months ago when previously attached director Joey Soloway (Transparent) and star Hannah John-Kamen left the project. Bassett is still working from the screenplay Soloway wrote with Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). This version of Red Sonja is derived from the sword and sorcery comic books by Dynamite Entertainment, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas.
Lutz is joined in the cast by Wallis Day (Sex/Life) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak,...

Matilda Lutz (Revenge), Wallis Day (Sex/Life) and Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) have been tapped to lead the cast of Millennium Media’s upcoming comic book film Red Sonja, from director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane), which is now in production at the Bulgarian Nu Boyana Studio, with filming at the Greek Nu Boyana Studio to follow.
Inspired by the sword and sorcery comic books of the same name by Dynamite Entertainment, Red Sonja is based on the heroine originally created for Marvel Comics by Robert E. Howard and subsequently adapted by Roy Thomas. While the character is described as a fearsome warrior boasting a high degree of skill with a sword, details as to the film adaptation’s plot have not been disclosed. "Are these men bad?" "It's a bit tricky..." Uncork'd Entertainment has just debuted an official Us trailer for a crime drama titled West of Sunshine set in Australia, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jason Raftopoulos. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival back in 2017, but is just now getting a very small released in the Us. The film is about a father who has less than a day to pay back a debt to a violent loan shark, while his relationship with his young son is tested as his plans fall apart. Damian Hill stars as Jim, along with Ty Perham, Kat Stewart, Arthur Angel, Eliza D'Souza, and Kaarin Fairfax. This already opened in Australia last year and is heading to VOD here soon, for those interested in it. One of the quotes mentions Animal Kingdom, which is an exceptional Oz crime drama, but I don't think this one is that good.
