Alejandra Villaba García’s “Hyperballad,” Sophia Mocorrea’s “Marriage by Abduction” and Theo Court’s “Three Dark Nights” feature in a 15-title lineup of Ventana Sur’s Proyecta project lineup which is emerging as Ventana’s industry centerpiece as international co-production becomes vital to more ambitious arthouse filmmaking.
Organised by Cannes Marché du Film and the San Sebastian Film Festival, Proyecta received 200 submissions this year, up from 170 in 2022.
There is also good word on a broad range of projects from “The Heart is an Erratic Muscle” to “Moa,” “The Devil’s Well,” “Malena Once Again” and “Water Never Hurt.”
“Hyperballad” has what rates as one of the most potent mixtures in Latin American filmmaking: Genre; an ambitious first feature; and a female director, building on Alejandra Villaba García’s short “Microcastillo,” seen at Cannes’ 2017 Critics’ Week Morelia showcase.

“The Invisible Ink,” a drama from Uruguay’s Mutante Cine co-founder Fernando Epstein (“Whisky”) and Cannes Camera D’Or winning Guatemalan director César Díaz (“Our Mothers”), was first pitched to international markets at last year’s Conecta Fiction & Entertainment’s Co-Pro Series session, where it won double. It retained its momentum as it swept up a €50,000 Beta Development Award last month at Series Mania Forum’s Seriesmakers strand.
“The truth is, when I found out about the award, I was very flattered. We have something strong on our hands,” Epstein told Variety. “I don’t want to fail to mention the excellent program devised by Series Mania and Beta Group, from the virtual talks to each session with our mentors; everything was impressively rich and generous.”
“For people who’ve never worked on a series, it’s extremely important to have these spaces where we can experiment and learn,” Díaz added.

Lille, France — “Yours, Margot,” from “Compartment No 6’s” Juho Kuosmanen, Guatemalan Cannes Camera d’Or winner César Díaz (“Our Mothers”) and Brazil’s Beatriz Seigner (“Los Silencios”) have won the three prizes on offer at the first edition of Seriesmakers.

Now, Latin America is seeing second-phase expansion based out of smaller markets, driven by the energies of forward-thinking production companies determined to not just build slates but their national film industries.

Every now and then, a country emerges from decades of oppression and a film industry, once squashed lest it tell truths uncomfortable for the powers that be, begins to blossom with new, unfettered voices. The country of the moment is Guatemala, which is being honored at this year’s Guadalajara International Film Festival, and has begun to make itself known around the world largely through the success of Jayro Bustamante’s 2021 Golden Globe nominee and Venice Days winner “La Llorona” and Cesar Diaz’s “Nuestras Madres,” which won both the Camera d’Or and the Sacd Critics Week prizes at Cannes 2019.

With Guatemala as this year’s guest country of honor at the 36th Guadalajara Int’l Film Festival (Ficg), the festival will be screening more than a dozen films from this tiny Central American country, including one of its recent standouts, Justin Lerner’s “Cadejo Blanco.” The female-driven crime drama stages its world premiere Oct. 3 at the fest where it competes in the official Ibero-American Features section.
Although born in Boston, Lerner’s ties with Guatemala run deep, where he even proposed to his French-American wife at the edge of a volcano. More importantly, he helped with the creation of a film school there in 2016 where he was its first film professor. It was while teaching there when one of his students introduced him to the picturesque Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Barrios where “Cadejo Blanco” mainly takes place.

One of Netflix's best series is about to launch its final batch of episodes.
Yes, we're talking about On My Block.
The streamer on Monday dropped the trailer for On My Block Season 4, and it teases a lot of changes for the characters at the wheel of the series.
It begins in the past, with Cesar telling Monse that the only thing he will do in life is join a gang and turn to a life of crime.
Monse, of course, is trying to tell her love interest there's more out there for him.
Unfortunately, the characters are all apart when the final season debuts, with them all going their separate ways following a significant time jump.
It's an exciting way to shake up the dynamics for the final batch of episodes, but the road back to friendship for this quartet is not going to be easy.

The female-driven crime drama Cadejo Blanco has unveiled a clip in advance of its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Industry Selects section. Cadejo Blanco is reminiscent of Maria Full of Grace and Miss Bala, addressing timely issues of lack of opportunities for women, youth violence, and indiscriminate crime in Guatemala. Writer/director Justin Lerner spent years in Guatemala interviewing young people with gang affiliations, collecting their life stories. For authenticity, he cast his interview subjects to play themselves in the film, and then spent a year doing acting workshops with them. He encouraged each actor to revise the script as they saw necessary, even during shooting, a process that allowed the non-professional cast to ensure their stories were being properly represented on screen.

The end is approaching for Netflix's On My Block.
The streamer on Tuesday announced the fourth -- and final -- season will premiere Monday, October 4.
All episodes will be available that day, which is a different day of the week in comparison to previous seasons.
Then again, Netflix has a stacked roster of programming for the rest of the year, so it makes sense.
On My Block is a coming of age comedy about a group of bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through high-school in the rough inner city.
"Season 4 finds our friends two years later, having gone their separate ways. When a secret is unburied, they quickly learn you can’t run from the past and they will need to stick together to survive."
The cast includes Diego Tinoco as Cesar Diaz, Sierra Capri as Monse Finnie, Jason Genao as Ruby Martinez, Brett Gray as Jamal Turner,...

The Pingyao International Film Festival, founded by Chinese helmer Jia Zhangke and former Venice head Marco Muller, has released its full lineup of global and local films. The selections in the two main sections focus on first or second features.

Whew, the season three finale of On My Block gave us a lot to process, didn't it? Thanks to Oscar "Spooky" Diaz (Julio Macias), the main quintet - Monse Finnie (Sierra Capri), Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco), Ruby Martinez (Jason Genao), Jamal Turner (Brett Gray), and Jasmine Flores (Jessica Marie Garcia) - no longer have to worry about Santos gang leader Cuchillos coming for their lives. That's great news, right? Right. The only thing is, what happens after that resolution has us simultaneously crying tears of joy and sorrow - and wondering if there's going to be a season four.
At the end of the third chapter, there's a two-year time jump that shows each of the characters on their respective paths after Monse leaves for boarding school at the Mayfield Girls Academy. Spooky, with a head full of hair, finds a significant other and is expecting a baby (yay!), and...

After leaving us on a major cliffhanger at the end of season two, Netflix's On My Block has a lot of explaining to do. Even with the latest trailer for the third chapter, we're desperate for answers. In the clip, we see the "Core Four" - Monse Finnie (Sierra Capri), Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco), Ruby Martinez (Jason Genao), and Jamal Turner (Brett Gray) - and honorary member Jasmine Flores (Jessica Marie Garcia) embark on a new mission after being kidnapped by Cuchillos, the Santos gang leader.
Apparently, Lil' Ricky is alive and Cuchillos tasks the group with tracking him down - or else. Of course, things don't go as planned, and our favorite teenage investigators are taken on a wild ride. Will they find Lil' Ricky? Are they going to maintain their tight-knit friendship? Is season three going to be as emotional as season two? Will they ever do regular homework?...

Why this is not an understatement is demonstrated, to an extent, in this chronologically told, uninspiringly shot and flatly acted feature that tackles an important subject: the Guatemalan genocide that killed thousands of indigenous people in the Central American nation in the early 1980s.
