Madrid (Spain), Aug 28 (Ians) Spain’s La Liga witnessed a flurry of goals this weekend, with six in the match played in Bilbao and seven in the Villarreal versus Barcelona match at the Ceramica stadium in Villarreal.
As the competition intensifies and teams reach their prime fitness, here are four takeaways from the weekend’s action in Spain.
1. Bellingham Does It Again
Jude Bellingham proved pivotal once again, guiding Real Madrid to a narrow 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Friday evening. The England international netted the only goal a mere 10 minutes before the match concluded, reports Xinhua.
Celta, deserving at least a draw, had Strand Larsen’s early goal controversially disallowed due to a ‘foul’ on Madrid’s goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, as determined by Var.

Madrid, Aug 27 (Ians) Sevilla’s disastrous start to the season continued on Saturday as the Europa League champions were stunned by Girona 2-1 at home.
Yangel Herrera put an impressive Girona side ahead in the 16th minute when he hammered home a loose ball after Sevilla failed to clear a corner, reports Xinhua.
Nemanja Gudelj leveled for Sevilla on the stroke of halftime as he controlled a clearance from a corner and volleyed home, but Aleix Garcia put Girona ahead 10 minutes into the second half with a good finish from a right cross.
Ivan Rakitic had the ball in the net for Sevilla shortly afterward, but his excellent shot was ruled out for a narrow offside. The home side was denied a penalty appeal in the last minute of normal time after the Var decided Rakitic’s free kick had hit David Lopez’s shoulder, rather than his arm.

Budapest (Hungary), June 1 (Ians) Top Spanish club Sevilla made a remarkable comeback to clinch the Europa League title, with goalkeeper Bono thwarting two attempts to ensure a 4-1 victory in the penalty shootout at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Thursday.
The opening period proved challenging for both sides, marked by numerous fouls that disrupted the rhythm of the match.
The first genuine scoring opportunity came 12 minutes into the match when Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola tested Sevilla’s goalkeeper with a shot from the edge of the penalty area, reports Xinhua.
Despite being Europa League record winners, Sevilla struggled to penetrate Roma’s staunch defense.
Roma eventually broke the deadlock when Gianluca Mancini’s through ball, following a counterattack, allowed Paulo Dybala to strike past Bono into the far post corner, 35 minutes into the game.

Madrid, Jan 23 (Ians) Fc Barcelona retained a three-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after both sides won.
Pedri’s 35th-minute goal gave Barca a 1-0 win at home to Getafe, who complicated things for the league leaders for most of the game, reports Xinhua news agency.
Barca lacked spark in attack without Robert Lewandowski, but goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen produced another solid display in goal to snuff out any threat from Getafe.
Barca’s win meant Real Madrid kicked off their game away to Athletic Club Bilbao six points off the back of the table, but an excellent goal from Karim Benzema in the 24th minute (his 19th against the Basques) put them ahead in an even first half.
Athletic had Madrid on the back foot for nearly all of the second half but struggled to provide a finish to some good approach play.

San Sebastian, Jan 18 (Ians) Real Sociedad were the first team into the draw for the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey knockout competition in Spain after beating Mallorca 1-0.
Roberto Navarro continued his goalscoring form in the Cup when he put Real Sociedad ahead in the fifth minute after a pass from Martin Zubimendi and the home side controlled the first half from start to finish, with a Mallorca side packed with fringe players unable to manage one shot in the first 45 minutes, on Tuesday night, reports Xinhua news agency.
The match was played in the pouring rain, which didn’t help flowing football and the second half saw little in the way of chances, with Clement Grenier at least having a shot for the visitors, even if it was directly at home keeper Alex Remiro.
The home side were considerably below their best and lost full back Andoni Gorosabal...

New Delhi, Dec 30 (Ians) Arguably the greatest player to play football, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pele (82), breathed his last at a Sao Paulo hospital on Thursday after losing a prolonged battle against cancer.

Portuguese soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo paid a heart-touching tribute to the ‘Black Pearl’, soon after the news of his demise was madepublic.
Taking to his Instagram handle, Ronaldo wrote: “My deep condolences to all of Brazil, and in particular to the family of Edson Arantes do Nascimento. A mere ‘goodbye’ to the eternal King Pele will never be enough to express the pain that the entire football world is currently embracing.

Madrid, Oct 11 (Ians) Real Madrid and Sevilla have away games in the Champions League on Tuesday night, but the needs of both clubs are very different.
Real Madrid travel to face Shahktar Donetsk in a game that will be played in Poland knowing that a win would give them 12 points from their first four group games and all-but assure their place in the knockout stage of the tournament as group winners.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is still without injured Lucas Vazquez, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is struggling with a back problem, but he will bring Karim Benzema back into the side after resting the Frenchman in Saturday’s win in Getafe.

Madrid, Sep 7 (Ians) Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City cruised past Sevilla 4-0 away from home in their opening Champions League encounter.
Sevilla went into the match with three defeats and a draw from their opening four La Liga matches, and with coach Julen Lopetegui still trying to work out the side’s defence, this was never going to be a good time to play the Premier League champions.
Pep Guardiola’s side began by totally dominating the game, with Sevilla struggling to contain the mobility of the Manchester City side, where Kevin de Bruyne, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Haaland swapped positions and moved the ball at will, Xinhua reports.
The surprise was that it took City 20 minutes to open the scoring, with a goal that again saw them out-pass their rivals until De Bruyne crossed for Haaland to score with a simple finish from close range.

(Updated With Viewership Numbers) On a scorching Saturday that saw England advance further in the World Cup than the home of the beautiful game has since 1990 and Croatia take down a dynamo, Russia was on seemingly everyone’s lips and the object of their eyes yesterday – and we don’t mean Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation of Donald Trump and the adjoining array of Congressional committees.
