*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Midnight Releasing.
Director: Dave McCabe.
Writers: Dave McCabe, Ambrose McDermott, and Stephen Cumiskey.
Cast: Brian Fortune, Ruth McIntyre, Donna Bradley, Andy Blaikie, Gerry Shanahan, Vivienne Connolly
Brian McDonald (Simon Fogarty) was never a man of mystery in the movie Shackled. He rose up the ranks to become a police detective and there was one special case that he was hot on the trail of … but days later, when he is found dead on a beach by law enforcement, more than a few people are talking.
In the days following his funeral, his sister Sarah (Donna Bradley) still feels emotionally distraught. She has to undergo therapy and inherits Brian’s journal. But that is not enough closure for her. She and Michael Grant (Andrew Blaikie), a childhood friend of the McDonald clan, have far too many questions still to ask.

Follow the internet trail to socialistworld.net and you’ll find an article from 2003 entitled “Free the Bin Tax Twelve.” The article is about the arrest of 10 new protesters during a movement to resist a double tax on waste collection in Irish cities that placed its largest burden on poor residential areas. One of those protesters was the mother of a baby still being breastfed; meet the wife of Terry McMahon, director Charlie Casanova, which premiered this year at SXSW.
…I’m angry that my daughter went to prison when she was a baby to be breastfed. And I’m angry that in twenty years’ time, or thirty years’ time when she comes back to me and asks ‘Dad, what did you do?’ The least I can do is say, ‘well I tried to make a film that was about it, cause I was a eunuch and a whore and could do fuck all else.

Charlie Casanova
Directed by Terry McMahon

Ireland, 2010
After the world premier of Charlie Casanova at SXSW, the director of the film, Terry McMahon, approached the stage for the Q&A and first thanked those of us there for sticking around, and then said he imagined half of us had hated the film. What’s more, he didn’t blame us for hating it if we did. “It wasn’t,” he said, “supposed to be easy to watch.”
It’s true. It’s difficult to “like” this film in the traditional sense partly because the main character, Charlie Barnum (Emmet Scanlan), is so despicable. There is no break from Charlie’s hatred, insanity, smugness. The beginning of the film jumps right into a voiceover from Charlie in which we get a completely one-sided introduction to him. Charlie thinks highly of himself and is unapologetic for both his...

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...
