I may be hopping on this “band”wagon a bit late, but Noah And The Whale undeniably deserve the title as Shockya’s Artist Of The Week with their latest album, “Heart Of Nowhere”, which dropped on May 6th via Mercury Records. Following the release of “Last Night on Earth”, “The First Days of Spring” and “Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down”, the 10 track album is lyrically mesmerizing and relatable, which easily allowed me to forgive them for their awful 2011 single, “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.” No band should be wasting precious verses with spelling words or counting numbers for that matter. Currently consisting of Charlie Fink (vocals, guitar), Tom Hobden (violin, keys), Matt [ Read More ]

The idea of using a single band or singer-songwriter to score a film has fallen somewhat out of favor since the heyday of the 1960s/1970s, when films like "The Graduate" and "Harold & Maude" used the music of Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens to echo and underline the on-screen action. But a few filmmakers, in conscious homage to those pictures, have given it a stab in recent years, with Badly Drawn Boy's work on "About A Boy" and the upcoming "Being Flynn," and Alex Turner's tunes for "Submarine" being among the more memorable examples. And now one more acclaimed musician is getting in on the act, in the shape of British star Emma-Lee Moss, better known as Emmy The Great. Born out of the same nu-folk scene as Noah And The Whale, Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, Emmy has released two excellent albums to date, including last year's Virtue,...

We tried to cover as much ground as possible in the four jam-packed days of the SXSW music fest, but let's face it - you need twelve ears, six arms and zero hours of sleep to even break the surface of all that was worth reporting on in this marathon of musical mayhem. Here are some of the shows we saw that we didn't have time to cover in-depth - all artists worth checking out on record, or if you're lucky enough, in person.
Eddie Spaghetti @ The Red Eyed Fly: If you haven't ever experienced the badassedness of the Supersuckers' silly brand of 90's American rock and garage punk, you probably would have passed right over this show by the band's bassist and longtime front man, Eddie Spaghetti. With a full pit of beer-guzzling fans to cheer them on, Spaghetti and his band picked out songs from his new record "Sundowner,...

Adele has celebrated a seventh successive week at number one on the UK album chart. The 'Someone Like You' singer shifted another 160,000 copies of her sophomore album 21, which last week crossed the million sales milestone. The seven-day total is double that of this week's runner up, Elbow's fifth studio album Build A Rocket Boys!. Also finishing high up on the rankings are veteran rockers Rem, who score their 11th top ten album with Collapse Into Now, which is straight in at this week's five. The 'Everybody Hurts' hitmakers have sold almost 10 million albums in the UK alone throughout their extensive career. Indie stars Noah And The Whale also clock up an impressive debut with their third studio album Last Night On Earth at eight, while the comeback record from Avril Lavigne, Goodbye Lullaby, (more)...
