Many documentary filmmakers want their work on the big screen and not small. So, what gives? Why isn’t that happening?
One could argue that we haven’t seen a doc boom in cinemas since 2018 which served up such breakouts as Won’t You Be My Neighbor ($22.8M), Three Identical Strangers ($12.3M) and Rbg ($14M). The pandemic is partially to blame as audiences have savored non-fiction stories on streaming, i.e. the Netflix series, Tiger King.
“It’s not that it doesn’t work theatrically,” explained Lionsgate EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh who was part of the SXSW session “How to Tell True Stories: Narrative vs. Documentary”.
“It’s becoming more competitive to get people’s attention because there is so much documentary product out there that can be watched through streamers and other ways,” Koh added.

As fans eagerly anticipated the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a lot of them were delighted to find a special connection to the original animated series that signaled a dedication to the source material.
The showrunner of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix, Albert Kim, admitted that the cast of the live-action series featured some pretty big names, including Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, George Takei as the spirit Koh, and veteran character actor Tamlyn Tomita as Suki’s mother Yukari.
Yet the most successful of them all was James Sie. Indeed, the gifted voice actor who portrayed the recognizable Cabbage Merchant in the animated Nickelodeon series made an unexpected cameo in the live-action version. What a pleasure to hear that!

One of the key reasons why Avatar: The Last Airbender has retained relevancy even after two decades since its release is its immaculate, rich world-building, which has been strongly inspired by Southeast Asian and Arctic cultures. However, occasionally, even more than the cultural influence, folklore or mythological foundation acts as the base of its story arcs, which is especially noticeable in the lore of the spirits, mystical entities representing various aspects of nature, emotions, or abstract ideas who play a significant role in the four-element bending intrigue of Avatar. There is a sense of universality that gets conveyed through the world of spirits, creating a unified, coherent structure that grants the potential for more expansive storytelling as well.

Adaptations and re-imaginings are a tricky thing. They have to capture and recreate the essence of the original while also making changes for (potentially) a new medium, different times, and a new audience. The best ones recognize this and rebuild and remix the original until they end up improving it and making something that feels fresh and brand-new, like HBO's "Watchmen" series or Netflix's animated series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off." Another opportunity with adaptations is the benefit of hindsight. Even the most meticulous authors and creators cannot possibly think of absolutely everything ahead of time. This offers an opportunity for re-tellings to bring elements that were introduced later in the original story to the forefront.

Lionsgate has merged its production and acquisitions groups under motion picture group president Nathan Kahane.
The mini-major’s Jason Constantine has been named co-president of the motion picture group and will report directly to Kahane and oversee creative strategy in both production and acquisitions. During his tenure Constantine has driven acquisitions of the John Wick, Expendables and Saw franchises.

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up all rights excluding TV to the documentary Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV, directed and produced by Amanda Kim, which world premiered in U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
The film will launch its U.S. theatrical release at New York’s Film Form on March 24, being distributed in Canada by Films We Like starting on the same date, ahead of its U.S. broadcast premiere on PBS’ American Masters. Dogwoof acquired UK distribution rights and international sales rights outside of Korea in early January, with a distribution deal and streaming partner for the latter territory to be announced shortly.
The doc tells the story of Nam June Paik, a pillar of the American avant-garde in the 20th century, widely regarded as “The George Washington of Video Art,” who coined the phrase “Electronic Superhighway,” and is arguably the most famous Korean artist in modern history.

Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen is on a roll – his English-language debut Drift is premiering at Sundance Film Festival, he has Chinese-language drama The Breaking Ice being readied for festival play later this year, and several other directing projects in different languages at various stages of development and pre-production.
Drift, which stars Cynthia Erivo as a Liberian refugee scratching out an existence on a Greek island, is thematically not a million miles away from Chen’s previous two features – Ilo Ilo and Wet Season – in that they’re stories about outsiders or people struggling to find their place in the world and fit in. “I seem to gravitate to telling stories about outsiders and the bonds, or the human connections, that we make between strangers,” says Chen, who has some experience with feeling dislocated, as he grew up in Singapore but spent many years living in the UK.

AGC Studios, Stuart Ford’s independent content studio, is pushing into kids and young adult entertainment. The LA-based company has hired children’s content veteran Aghi Koh to spearhead its move into the space on an initial consulting basis, it was announced today by AGC’s Chief Creative Officer Lourdes Diaz.
