The success of The Golden Bachelor has led many to clamor for a female-fronted spinoff.
The Golden Bachelorette has been on viewers’ minds since Gerry Turner found love. ABC unscripted chief Rob Mills hinted that a decision is close.
Mills, EVP, Unscripted & Alternative Entertainment at Walt Disney Television, speaking at the Realscreen event in New Orleans, said, “I think something will be coming soon.”
However, he cautioned that he wants to be “really careful” to make sure that a spinoff can be as impactful as The Golden Bachelor.
Warner Bros Unscripted TV’s Co-Head of Programming and Development Bridgette Theriault told Deadline last year that she’d “absolutely love” to see Golden Bachelor spinoffs and that active discussions with ABC have already taken place.

After years of controversies as ratings steadily declined, is 2023 the year The Bachelor franchise found redemption?
The prospect feels greater than ever following the outsized success of The Golden Bachelor, ABC’s ingenious senior-focused spin-off that, in its first season, saw 72-year-old Gerry Turner seize a second chance at love.
Audiences have clearly responded to this breath of fresh air, with over 9M tuning in for The Golden Bachelor finale after seven days of multi-platform viewing, in the franchise’s best audience in almost four years. This comes following an entire season of success for the show, which has repeatedly set audience records since it debuted, with the premiere episode recently becoming ABC‘s most-watched episode of an unscripted series ever on Hulu.
The network has already announced plans to further cash in on the success of Golden by televising Turner’s wedding, a move ABC hasn’t opted for in years.

Oscar-and Emmy-winning director Jessica Yu will direct the untitled docu about the 71-year-old humor brand.

Yu will also examine how Mad became a staple of American satire for generations and encouraged readers to question authority. Mad magazine, which is owned by DC, has authorized the doc and granted the filmmaking team exclusive access to its archives.
In April Al Jaffee, the cartoonist who gave Mad magazine its iconic back page by creating the publication’s fold-in feature, died at the age of 102. Warner Bros. Television Group has eliminated 125 jobs, IndieWire has learned. That tally includes 82 employees laid off across the scripted, unscripted, and animation divisions as well as 43 open positions that will go unfilled.
The 125 jobs represent a loss of 26 percent of the current and vacant positions at the company. The layoffs alone comprise 19 percent of the current Wbtv workforce.
Parent corporation Warner Bros. Discovery has been cutting costs in all sorts of ways, including previous rounds of layoffs and the scrubbing of completed films and television series. Warner Bros. Television Group handed out pink slips to 82 staffers on Tuesday, representing 19 of the studio’s workforce, across its scripted, unscripted and animation divisions. Additionally, it has opted not to fill 43 additional vacant positions — making for a total elimination of 125 jobs (or 26 of an approximately 481 headcount).
Warner Bros. TV Group declined comment, but it’s understood that chairman Channing Dungey detailed to staff a series of changes that included various levels of consolidation in unscripted and animation. Warner Bros. TV Group declined comment, but it’s understood that chairman Channing Dungey detailed to staff a series of changes that included various levels of consolidation in unscripted and animation. Also, as reported Tuesday afternoon, the company has closed Stage 13, a shingle focused on diverse shortform programming (leading to the exit of Stage 13 head Diana Mogollón), and will end the Warner Bros. Television Workshop, which had existed for decades as a training ground for new creative talent in both writing and directing.

Exclusive: Warner Bros. Unscripted & Alternative Television is trimming the executive ranks of two of its three divisions, Shed Media and Telepictures.
Leaving are Pam Healey, General Manager of Shed Media, and Stuart Krasnow, Evp Creative Affairs of Telepictures, along with a couple of development executives across both units. They won’t be replaced.
I hear the departures are part of streamlining across Shed Media and Telepictures, which also involves consolidating some finance, business and other back-office operations in cost synergies from efficiencies. Beyond that, Shed and Telepictures will continue to operate independently.
The biggest of the three Warner Bros. Unscripted & Alternative divisions, Warner Horizon Unscripted Television, is not affected.
Healey had run cable-centric Shed Media since January 2013 and was responsible for supervising the development and production of original unscripted television series.
In light of her departure, her top lieutenants, Svp of Programming Dan Peirson and Lisa Shannon will take on leadership responsibilities.
