Like “Weird Al” Yankovic, Ed Sheeran won his first-ever Primetime Emmy Award Saturday as his Ted Lasso track “A Beautiful Game” was named Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics. With the singer abroad for an upcoming tour — and thus missing the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony — Sheeran turned to social media to deliver his acceptance speech of sorts.
“We won an Emmy last night,” Sheeran wrote. “I was not expecting to win at all, it was a real real surprise waking up to the news, I wish I had been there but...

In the battle between British pop stars Ed Sheeran and Sam Ryder — both nominated for Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso — it was Grammy winner Sheeran who walked away with the Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics.
This was the first Emmy nomination and first win for the “Perfect” and “Shape of You” singer-songwriter, who was not present at the Creative Emmy Awards Saturday to accept the statuette. He shared the award with his song co-writing team, prolific hitmaker Max Martin and Foy Vance.
The trio’s Emmy-winning song, “A Beautiful Game”, was featured in the Ted Lasso finale “So Long, Farewell.”
The other nominated song from Season 3 of Ted Lasso was “Fought & Lost”, co-written and performed by Ryder. The category also included original songs from Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia, Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q, Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as Roku’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Ten years ago, Irish singer Foy Vance released his breakthrough 2013 album Joy of Nothing, which boasted the closing track “Guiding Light” featuring Ed Sheeran. To mark a decade since the song’s arrival, Vance and Sheeran reunited with two more singers you’ve probably heard of — Elton John and Keith Urban — for the “Anniversary Edition” of “Guiding Light.”
The new rendition, produced by Johnny McDaid, was also paired with a video starring actress AnnaSophia Robb:

English singer-songwriter Passenger has transformed his breakthrough hit, “Let Her Go,” into a duet featuring Ed Sheeran.
The new version of the song arrived Friday, Nov. 10, as part of a special 10th anniversary edition of Passenger’s hit 2013 album, All the Little Lights. Passenger re-recorded the entire LP, enlisting artists like Sheeran, Foy Vance, Gabrielle Aplin, and Nina Nesbitt to help him reimagine the songs.
With Sheeran, Passenger finds new dimensions to explore in “Let Her Go,” bolstering the strings, undergirding the production with piano, and adding a bit of glockenspiel for good measure.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a thing for everything that is catchy – especially melodies you just can’t get out of your head. It doesn’t really matter what genre it is, as long as I wanna put it on repeat. No wonder I started making pop music! I’ve never really wanted to make one type of pop song, I just wanna write good songs. I’ve been writing and writing, and I felt like releasing one single this year just wasn’t enough, so I decided to put out an EP to show where I’m at now musically. I love the format: short and snappy, but enough time to showcase different sides to the songwriting, the story and the sound. On the Hype EP I’ve written about wondering if you really did live up to the expectations, messing up, getting over someone,...

It all started with music supervisor Tony Von Pervieux’s dream of working with pop music maestro Max Martin for an original Ted Lasso song — and ended with an emotional tearjerker that was so good Jason Sudeikis wrote a specific scene for the tune in the season three finale of the Apple TV+ comedy. Sudeikis even had a tiny role in changing one of the song’s lyrics (more on that later).
This is the story behind Ted Lasso‘s Emmy-nominated track “A Beautiful Game,” performed by Ed Sheeran and written by Sheeran, Martin and Foy Vance.
A Song Is Born
When Von Pervieux received the go-ahead from Ted Lasso producers to pursue an original song by Martin for the series, he had to pitch the five-time Grammy-winning producer, who has launched 25 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “He has always been one of the best producers of all time.

This story about the Emmy-nominated songs first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In the Emmys’ Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category, it pays to be funny. After all, this is the category where the winners include “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “It’s Not Just for Gays Anymore” from the Tony Awards, “Dick in a Box” from “Saturday Night Live” and, um, “I’m F—ing Matt Damon” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Over the past two decades, comedic songs have won more than two-thirds of the time. Most years, they’ve landed the majority of the nominations.
This year, four of the six nominees are from comedies: “Fought & Lost” and “A Beautiful Game” from “Ted Lasso,” “Your Personal Trash Man Can” from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Now You Know” from the TV movie “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Since breaking through a decade ago with their impassioned vocal on Disclosure’s churning club smash “Latch,” Sam Smith has been one of pop’s premier torch singers. Their ability to express yearning, whether by using their gasped upper register or their voice’s smoothed-out lower reaches, lends itself naturally to ballads, or glumly kinetic songs like the 2019 Normani collaboration “Dancing With a Stranger.”

Anderson East reckons with a collective need for clarity in “Drugs,” the funky new release from his upcoming album Maybe We Never Die. The follow-up to 2018’s Encore, Maybe We Never Die will come out August 20th.
Veering away from the retro R&b sounds that have been a mainstay of his albums, East cooks up a bass-driven disco groove for “Drugs” that’s accented by theremin and perky flute runs. The Alabama native adopts a silky falsetto for most of the tune, pondering the eternal difficulty of facing reality.

Last week on “The Voice,” the knockout rounds commenced with two artists getting sent home: Casmè for Team John Legend and Ryan Berg for Team Gwen Stefani. That left 26 artists still in the running to win the Season 19 championship, with many more about to be eliminated during Monday’s two-hour episode. Gwen was the only coach to use her last save of the season (on country singer Ben Allen), which meant John, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton still had the power to swoop in and save an at-risk contestant before the all-important live shows. How did Night 2 of the knockouts play out, and what advice did mega mentor Usher give to the remaining artists?

Foy Vance has kept a busy schedule this year. From Muscle Shoals, a collection of Americana songs recorded in the titular capital of Alabama’s soul-music scene, arrived in June, followed in September by To Memphis. Although both albums were tracked in the American South, the songwriter remains a busy road warrior across much of the globe, playing gigs in England — where his record label, the Ed Sheeran-run Gingerbread Man Records, is based — one minute before heading elsewhere — say, his native Bangor, Ireland, or perhaps AmericanaFest in Nashville — the next.

Ed Sheeran’s documentary Songwriter, which Apple Music acquired in a seven-figure deal before the film’s Tribeca Film Festival deal this spring, is getting ready to hit the stage. The news came today as Apple released the first trailer for the docu, which goes behind the scenes to detail the intense collaborative process that produced some of Sheeran’s biggest hits including “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.” (Divide won the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy that year). Miranda Lambert has rarely talked about The Weight of These Wings, mostly letting the critically acclaimed – and intensely autobiographical – double album speak for itself since its release last November. But on Tuesday night, in an intimate all-acoustic concert featuring 15 of her 24 co-writers, Lambert opened up and allowed some of the stories behind the songs to be revealed.
“Music is medicine – it truly is,” the artist, 33, said from the stage of Marathon Music Works in Nashville.
And if that’s the case, her songwriting friends clearly were crucial in helping Lambert heal her heartbreak after her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton. They...

At the young age of 12, Coco Arquette has landed another music video -- and her mother couldn't be prouder.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette's 12-year-old daughter, along with aspiring actor Matthew Rc Taylor, star in indie band Monogem's music video for their song "Wild" -- and wild they get.
Watch: Courteney Cox and David Arquette's Daughter Coco Is All Grown Up!
The dimly lit video begins with Coco watching her onscreen mother pulling out of the driveway and her sneaking Matthew into the house. The two then start running amuck, putting on makeup, dressing in fur coats, dancing around the house and jumping into the pool. While most of the video appears to be just two kids having some harmless fun, it ends with Coco and Matthew, with smudged makeup, riding their bikes to a liquor store and pulling masks over their faces with the intent to rob the place.

Are you Ok, Ed Sheeran? Fresh off of spending an adorable afternoon at a children's hospital with a sick fan, the "Thinking Out Loud" singer reportedly ended up as a patient himself when a night out with friends resulted in a bloody, bizarre accident. Ed, who has been keeping a low profile ever since telling fans he'd be taking a break from social media in December 2015, was at a party with pal James Blunt and Princess Beatrice when the royal accidentally sliced his face open while trying to "knight" James with a ceremonial sword. James, like any rational human, apparently begged her to make him "Sir James Blunt," but she lost her grip on the sword and Ed happened to be in the way. According to reports, he had to get stitches to repair the gash, which can be seen in a photo with a fan taken not long after the incident.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette's daughter, Coco, makes a special appearance in Foy Vance's new music video, which is also named after her, and it will give you some serious emotions. Not only does the 12-year-old look super grown up and beautiful in the clip, but her mother actually helped direct it. Courteney's fiancé, Snow Patrol musician Johnny McDaid, was a key player in helping the collaboration come to life. "Johnny brought Foy into my life a few years ago, and, immediately, he became a very close friend," Courteney told People. "He also got to know my daughter, Coco, and a song was born. From the first time Foy played 'Coco' for me - and every time I've heard it since - I've felt he captured not only Coco's unique personality, but also the beautiful childhood innocence that sadly, but inevitably, fades with time." So sweet! See...
